Johann Wanhal (Vanhal) was an important classical composer from Bohemian/Czech heritage (1739-1813). His main living was as an organist and choirmaster, however Wanhal's musical output as a composer includes over a dozen concerti, many symphonies, chamber music, operas and much sacred music including 58 masses.
Wanhal is rumored to have played chamber music with Mozart, Haydn and Dittersdorf, with Wanhal on the cello.
In the 1770's Wanhal met the contrabassist Johannes Matthias Sperger and wrote a double bass concerto for him. The Concerto is in the key of E-Flat (original key of D for the double bass) in three movements and has been expertly arranged for Tuba and Piano by Ms. Janet Yarbrough of Duke University.
This work is available for solo Tuba with Wind Ensemble.

When writing his Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33, Camille Saint-Saens created a 'classic' of violoncello literature. But the French musician even wrote other solo works for this instrument: a second concerto, two sonatas, the 'Swan' from 'The Carnival of the Animals' as well as a 'Suite with Piano Accompaniment' Op. 16. Premiered on 27 April 1866 and probably written shortly before, the work is based on the composer's study of tradition, especially of the form of the Baroque suite, integrated in a Romantic tonal language. Many years later (1919) the composer also presented a version with orchestral instead of piano accompaniment, and for this version he replaced movements 3 and 5 and changed the ending of the fourth movement. The present edition contains the text of the orchestral version: The five-movement suite begins with a prelude reminiscent of Bach which is followed by a pleasant serenade, a stylized gavotte and a sentimental romance before a passionate tarantella puts a virtuoso end to the piece. The enthusiastic, melodic 'Suite' is a valuable addition to the cello repertoire, suitable for both tuition and concert purposes.

The Phoenix and the Turtle sets a poem by Shakespeare published 1601 that uses the metaphor of a bird's funeral to describe the death of an idealistic love. Watkins spins out a jazzy melody surrounded by close harmonies using the text to create a lively, rhythmic opening. The textures and rhythms settle into homophonic movement as the chords open ever outward in a slower middle section, before resolving onto a solemn ending in unison.

French composer and conductor, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Liturgical Fanfares in 1952. As with his other wind compositions, Liturgical Fanfares was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille, but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured into musical studies by his parents, Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor, and during the summer he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However, in 1921, he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes, often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother into his compositions. Composed for an unusual instrumentation of Brass Ensemble, Timpani and Drums, Liturgical Fanfares comprises four movements; 1) Annunciation, 2) Gospel, 3) Apocalypse, and 4) Good Friday Procession. This Tomasi piece is suitable to advanced players and provides an exciting, alternative addition to the ensemble repertoire..
