Hip and cool doesn't have to take a lot of rehearsal time and hard work - at least not with this chart. The ranges are conservative and the rhythms are basic, but you'd never know it from the big and full sound. An open solo section for any instrument on very basic chord changes, plus lots of hard driving ensemble writing make this one a true winner.

This is a gorgeous feature for tenor saxophone (there is also a piano solo). Sensuous, warm, lush ..... all those good things. Set in a slow bossa-nova style, this lyrical piece will please your players and audiences alike. Very modest brass ranges (high D for tpt. 1) and easy rhythms make this chart very playable and attractive for just about any band. 5-4-4-4 (Opt. 10 brass).

Originally recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on their album Afrique, 'Kilimanjaro' is a mesmerizing, easy-feeling Latin composition which pulses along by the constant tumbao bass groove and infectious percussion. Featuring flute and trumpet on the melody, Oliver Nelson's composition has a very bluesy touch and allows for solos as you choose. Moderate brass ranges (highest note for trumpet is a written D), a written out bass line throughout, and flexible solos makes this outstanding piece playable by most any band. 5-4-4-4 (opt. Latin percussion).

As recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on Adventures In Standards CD, this is a wonderful, swinging chart on a great tune. As usual, Lennie does a great job arranging it, with terrific section work and limited ranges for the brass (written high D for 1st Tpt). There is a nice, lengthy solo for Baritone Sax. 5-5-5-3 (can be played with 8 brass).

This is another one of those absolutely wonderful charts that Lennie did for Stan Kenton for what was known as the dance book. It was the hippest dance book ever! A medium-swing tempo sets this great standard in a framework that is very musical and very exciting. Trumpet and bass are featured. Limited ranges (tpt. written high D). This one will be a real favorite. 5-5-5-3.

Bill Holman, well known for his solo features, originally arranged this iconic tenor saxophone feature, 'Out of Nowhere,' for Bill Perkins and the Stan Kenton Orchestra in the mid '50s. Set as an up-tempo swing, the tenor saxophone is featured throughout and has lots of solo space to make this tune its own. Combine that with a cookin' rhythm section and great swinging ensemble passages, this chart is really happening! This new Finale edition provides cleaner, more correct parts and is easier to read with better page turns. This 'pro' version is the original chart requiring 10-brass. Brass ranges are reasonable in both versions (highest note for trumpet is a written D). 5-5-5-3.
