Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century, lyrics had been added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used three contrastingtraditional tunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert.

De wortels van de klezmerstijl liggen in wereldlijke melodieën, populaire dansen, het joodse ‘hazanut’ (cantorijmuziek) en de ‘nigunim’, de melodieën die worden gereciteerd door de ‘hasidim’ (orthodoxe joden). De term werd in de loopder tijden synoniem aan instrumentale muziek, waarin met name de viool en klarinet de hoofdrol spelen. Voor A Klezmer Karnival zijn drie traditionele melodieën gebruikt: Choson kale mazel tov, een bruiloftsdans,Freylekh, een joodse kringdans, en Sherele, een Duitse herdersdans.

Philip Sparke verarbeitete in seinem neuen Werk drei unterschiedliche traditionelle Klezmermelodien: einen Hochzeitstanz mit Glückwünschen für Braut und Bräutigam, einen Rundtanz und einen so genannten Scherentanz. Daraus entstand A Klezmer Karnival, das die dem Klezmer eigene Mischung aus Fröhlichkeit und Melancholie ausgezeichnet wiedergibt. Ein ebenso abwechslungsreiches wie stimmungsvolles Konzertwerk, mit dem Ihre Brass Band überzeugen wird!

Jouée depuis le Moyen ge par des musiciens juifs itinérants (klezmorim), la musique klezmer est une musique joyeuse colportée de fête en mariage, qui trouve ses origines dans les “shtetl” (villages) et les ghettos d’Europe de l’Est. A Klezmer Karnival (“Festival klezmer”) de Philip Sparke rassemble trois airs traditionnels : Choson Kale Mazel Tov - une danse nuptiale, Freylekh - une danse juive en cercle et Sherele - littéralement « petits ciseaux » - une danse de bergers, d’origine allemande.

Marcho Brioso was commissioned by The Brioso Brass, a British-style brass band from Hokkaido, Japan. They gave the first performance in January 2012.The commission was for a bright and breezy march that the band could use as their theme tune, so Marcho Brioso falls into the composer’s series of Broadway-style marches, which includes Slipstream, The Bandwagon and Jubiloso. After a short introduction a solo cornet plays the main theme, accompanied by a euphonium counter-melody. A secondary phrase from the horns and baritones leads to a tutti version of the main theme which is followed by the traditional ‘bass’ strain. A change of key heralds thetrio section, which features a cantabile melody on euphonium; this is then taken up by the full band after a short bridge passage and further change of key.This takes us back to the home key which sees a quiet staccato version of the main theme lead to a recapitulation and a short coda which brings the march to a close.

Marcho Brioso is geschreven in opdracht van The Brioso Brass, een brassband in Britse stijl uit Hokkaido in Japan. De première vond plaats in januari 2012.De componist kreeg het verzoek een vrolijke, luchtige mars te schrijven die de band als herkenningstune zou kunnen gebruiken. Marcho Brioso past daarom uitstekend in Philip Sparke’s serie van marsen in Broadwaystijl - waarin ook Slipstream, The Bandwagon en Jubiloso thuishoren.

Marcho Brioso wurde von The Brioso Brass, einer britisch geprägten Brass Band aus Hokkaido in Japan, in Auftrag gegeben. Das Stück wurde von der Band im Januar 2012 uraufgeführt.Gewünscht war ein heiterer, flotter Marsch, welcher sich als Erkennungsmelodie der Brass Band eignen sollte. So fällt Marcho Brioso in die Reihe der Märsche des Komponisten im Broadway-Stil, zu denen auch Slipstream, The Bandwagon und Jubiloso zählen.Nach einer kurzen Einleitung spielt ein Solo-Cornet das Hauptthema, begleitet von einer Gegenmelodie im Euphonium. Die Nebenphrase in den Hörnern und Baritonen führen zu einer Tutti-Version des Hauptthemas, die vomtraditionellen Bass“-Solo abgelöst wird. Ein Tonartwechsel kündigt den Trio-Teil an, der eine cantabile gespielte Melodie auf dem Euphonium enthält; diese wiederum wird nach einer kurzen Überleitung und einem weiteren Tonartwechsel von der gesamten Band aufgegriffen.Der letzte Wechsel führt zurück zur ursprünglichen Tonart, in welcher dann eine Staccato-Version des Hauptthemas eine Rekapitulation hervorbringt sowie eine Coda, die den Marsch zu seinem Ende führt.

Marcho Brioso est une œuvre de commande pour le Brioso Brass, un Brass Band de style britannique basé Hokkaido, au Japon. La création mondiale de cette pièce eut lieu en janvier 2012.L’orchestre souhaitant une marche enjouée qui pourrait lui servir d’indicatif musical, Marcho Brioso s’inscrit dans la lignée des marches du compositeur : Jubiloso, Slipstream et The Bandwagon. Un style « broadwayien », des motifs fortement syncopés et quelques surprenantes et capricieuses mesures viennent troubler le rythme régulièrement cadencé de ces marches.Après une courte introduction, le cornet solo joue le thème principal, accompagné d’un contre-chant l’euphonium. Un second motif de huit mesures exécuté par les cors et les barytons mène une version tutti du thème principal. Puis une brève section intermédiaire est déléguée aux basses. Le changement de tonalité qui s’ensuit annonce le trio qui contient une mélodie cantabile confiée l’euphonium ; ce trio est ensuite repris par l’orchestre entier après un bref passage de transition et un autre changement de tonalité.Nous revenons ensuite la tonalité de départ pour un rappel du thème principal en une paisible version staccato et une courte coda, pour conclure cette marche brillante et sémillante.

The Ukrainian Bell Carol is part of a large choral work entitled Shchedryk by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovych (1877-1921). The tune is an adaptation of an old 'shchedrivka', a song traditionally sung on Ukrainian New Year's Eve (January 13th) which hopes for good fortune in the year to come. The tune has since been the inspiration for at least four different Christmas carols, of which Carol of the Bells is the most famous. Philip Sparke has sourced the original Ukrainian melody to create this stirring arrangement.

De Ukrainian Bell Carol is onderdeel van het grote koorwerk Shchedryk van de Oekra ense componist Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovych (1877-1921). De melodie is gebaseerd op een ‘shchedrivka’, een lied dat van oudsher werdgezongen op de Oekra ense oudejaarsavond (13 januari). In Shchedryk voegde Leontovych de tekst toe over de legende die vertelt dat bij de geboorte van Jezus alle klokken op aarde begonnen te luiden. Sindsdien is deze melodiede inspiratiebron geweest voor ten minste vier verschillende Christmas carols, waarvan Carol of the Bells de beroemdste is. Voor dit meeslepende arrangement heeft Philip Sparke echter de oorspronkelijke Oekra ense melodiegebruikt.

Das Ukrainian Bell Carol (Ukrainisches Glocken- Weihnachtslied) ist Teil eines großen Chorwerkes namens Shchedryk vom ukrainischen Komponisten Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovych. Sein Text handelt von der Legende, die besagt, dass zu Ehren von Jesu Geburt alle Glocken läuteten. Aus der Melodie entstand unter anderem auch das bekannte Carol of the Bells von Peter J. Wilhousky. Philip Sparke griff für seine bewegende Bearbeitung jedoch auf die originale ukrainische Melodie zurück.

Ukrainian Bell Carol constitue une des parties de l’œuvre chorale Shchedryk du compositeur ukrainien Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovich (1877-1921). La mélodie s’inspire d’un vieux chant traditionnel ukrainien (shchedrivka) chanté le Jour de l’An (célébré le 13 janvier, conformément au calendrier julien) dans l’espoir que l’année venir se présente sous de bons hospices. l’écriture de Shchedryk, Mykola Leontovich a choisi de changer les paroles. Il opte pour la légende selon laquelle, toutes les cloches des églises se sont mises carillonner joyeusement pour annoncer la naissance de Jésus. La mélodie du chant a inspiré au moins quatre noëlsdifférents. Carol of the Bells en est la version la plus célèbre. Elle a été adaptée en 1936 (texte et mélodie) par Peter J. Wilhousky (1902-1978) d’après la version originale de Mykola Leontovich. Philip Sparke s’est basé sur la mélodie du chant traditionnel ukrainien pour réaliser cet arrangement brillant et pétillant.
