While somewhat chantlike and mantralike, this setting is propelled by a steady pulse, which uses a hand drum to emphasize the assembly responses. We think this a highly satisfying approach to this particular ritual text. Call and response with SATB responses. 2 handbells. Percussion part includes hand drum.

Two Shelley Songs were composed in 1981 on a commission from Ithaca College and published by Elkan-Vogel, Inc. in the Ithaca College Choral Series in 1982. The two poems by Shelley used here are To- and The Fugitives. Both of these pieces, published separately, are scored for mixed chorus with piano accompaniment. In order to perform them well, an excellent pianist is essential, for the accompaniment to the second poem The Fugitives is quite difficult, though quite pianistic. The style of the first poem is in a somewhat romantic idiom while the second contrasts it with rather wild harmonic writing utilizing large skips, clusters and other dissonant chordal devices. Great care is taken throughout to make these difficult sounding portions as easy as possible to perform by taking great care of the voice leadings. The two pieces should be done as a pair, but could conceivably be done separately.

An a cappella piece with some unexpected twists and turns. First half is somewhat slow and expressive, second half progresses to a more joyous, hopeful character. The character of the text is immediate and makes the piece good for the last weeks of the church year.

This arrangement represents the 5th movement of the larger work Canticles of Praise [], and has here been separated as a stand-alone anthem. The hymn tune CWM RHONDDA is utilized throughout – with the two texts appearing in the title order as the work unfolds. This setting begins and ends with a sparse, Billings-like treatment of the tune with a somewhat bare orchestration, while a more traditional 4-part rendering of the well-known hymn with richer underscoring comes forth in the center section. An optional narration exists for use with the larger work, Canticles of Praise.

A somewhat expanded setting in the style of intercessory prayer, complete with multiple petitions scored as verses for soloist, all in a gospel blues style. Text is in English and Spanish. The eight-bar refrain is given first in unison, then three-part, and finally SATB settings. This piece has a nice pop feel. For cantor or soloist.Â

A plaintive oboe solo floats above an expressive piano accompaniment in this inspired arrangement of the much-loved American folk song. Featuring unique harmonic twists and turns, and a gradual broadening of the original melody that mimics the movement of the river itself. A refreshing reimagining of a treasured classic.

One of a collection of works set to texts by e.e. cummings for the Los Angeles Chamber singers composed by Ian Krouse, who writes: The structural 'bubble' created by fragmenting and repeating individual words - or not - enablesthe composer to control the metabolism of the text - at times lingering at times racing. I particularly enjoy this aspect of text setting, and hope that it creates a somewhat spontaneous, improvisatory impression.

A twentieth century hymn text about the new creation is set to the old American folk hymn SAMANTHA to produce this haunting Advent anthem. The piano accompaniment provides rhythmic impetus, and the choral writing is approachable and satisfying.

It’s a setting of Psalm 130, composed in a funky groove, for solo singer and backup choir. A fairly extended and somewhat complex setting. Probably more ideal as a processional or closing song than a responsorial.
