Commissioned by The United States Marine Band and premiered in 1987, Clare Grundman's Concord has remained a staple in the wind band repertoire. The middle section of this work is a beautiful chorale based on the early hymn “America†composed by William Billings. Adapted here as a stand alone piece for younger bands, this is a stunning example of lyric writing and glorious harmonies. Dur: 1:40.

The opening Chorale section of this very appealling beginning band piece introduces the theme that is then used in the Canon that follows. Skillfully designed to pass the melody to every section, this is a very rewarding piece for beginning groups. First published in 1984.

Written in a sophisticated and dynamic style, this work from James Curnow is more impressive sounding than the easy grade level would indicate. Opening with a rhythmic and intense tocatta, this theme is contrasted with a sustained and lyric chorale section. Both themes are combined at the end for a powerful and rewarding finish.

As the title suggests, this piece comprises a set of variations on an original chorale, which is presented in the opening bars. The chorale uses the dark middle and lower sections of the band and is extended with minor variations until a pause leads to the first real variation, marked Vivo. This is in the form of a moto perpetuo. The second variation is a beautiful Andante introduced by a solo clarinet. Following a full band climax the final variation opens with quiet, nervous energy until its main theme is introduced. The chorale makes a brief appearance until the main theme reappears. This leads to a triumphant final augmented statement of the chorale theme, decorated by theflorid clarinet theme in the upper woodwinds. A dazzling new concert work.

The opening chorale provides an poignant introduction to the rhythmic vitality of the fast and dance-like exultation. Short punctuated notes over a driving rhythmic background underscore a feeling of rejoicing and jubilance. The chorale melody returns in juxtaposition with the energetic rhythms of the exultation. This is a wonderful concert selection to feature your band's rhythmic skills that will be appreciated by audience and players alike for years to come!

Chorale Variants is cast more as a fantasia than a set of variations. The woodwind flourishes purposely infer what an organist might play while improvising on a chorale theme, and the full dynamic power of the wind band brings the piece to a passionate and vibrant close.

A beautiful hymn with rich harmonies and suspensions opens this fine work for beginning bands. As the lyrical melody reaches a final cadence, the piece then moves into a bombastic chant with a wealth of percussion. The theme is presented in different textures and students will explore the basic components of a fugue in an easy setting. Listeners and performers alike will be excited by the rhythmic drive of the percussion. In addition, consider using the opening as a daily chorale to work on intonation with your ensemble.

During his short lifetime Max Reger (1873-1916) was a prolific composer with many of his best known works being composed for organ. The ten chorale preludes in this selection are from his set of Thirty Short Chorale Preludes Op.135a composed as short voluntaries for liturgical use rather than for recitals in these arrangements Philip Sparke has kept this in mind and each prelude can be performed with minimal instrumentation for those occasions where a small band is needed. They also make great pieces for band warm-ups or studies in intonation, sound and balance.
