Inspired by this genre, NOIR VIGNETTES consists of four movements, each depicting an aspect of film noir: Murder at Midnight, Loaded Gun, Femme Fatale, and Last Cigarette. String bass parts are provided both for standard orchestral tuning and for solo tuning.In the mid-1940s, film critics in France noticed a trend emerging in movies from the United States, which they coined film noir (which translates to “black filmâ€). These movies were dark, moody, and pessimistic, reflecting the agitation and anxiety present in society following World War II. A party of pallbearers is organised and the procession sets out for the cemetery in march time.The piece soon takes on a more cheerful spirit, for some of the troupe, wearied with the march, seek consolation at a wayside inn, where they refresh themselves and also descant upon the many virtues of their late companion. At last they get into place again and the procession enters the cemetery to the march rhythm -- the whole closing with the bars intended to reflect upon the briefness and weariness of life, even for marionettes.

Angel of Dusk for double bass, two pianos and percussion is a chamber ensemble version of Einojuhani Rautavaara's double bass concerto dating from 1980/1993. The work is dedicated to Olga Koussevitzky, the widow of Sergey Koussevitzky. The Koussevitzky foundation sent Einojuhani Rautavaara to study with Aaron Copland in Tanglewood, and it was Sibelius who chose Rautavaara as the recipient of this scholarship. The solo part has been corrected by the composer in the summer of 2015.

Belgian composer Theo Van Doren (1898 - 1974) was a Belgian composer, teacher and violinist. He was a teacher at the Music Academy of Borgerhout and was also a soloist in the orchestra of the Royal Flemish Opera in Antwerp. This edition of his Andante and Allegro for double bass and piano was first published by Metropolis Music Publishers in 1967. The opening Andante is a chance for the soloist to demonstrate the lyrical and expressive qualities of the double bass. Following this is the Allegro, which is a scherzo in 3/8 time, allowing the the soloist to show the technical capabilities and utilize the whole range of the instrument. The work is dedicated to Leo Van de Velde, teacher at the Royal Flemish Conservatory of Music in Antwerp.
