The opus 3 by Johann Adolf Hasse (1699-1783) contains twelve flute concertos. The present work is the seventh item of this series. Its modern edition is justified, in addition to the elegance and peculiarity of style, by the facility of the instrumental technique of the parts. The flute part is constructed of virtuosic and melodic elements and offers pupils after some years of flute studies already a rewarding, easily executable task of performance. This edition of the 28 variations on the aria Ich schlief, da traumte mir for flute and bassa continuo by Johann Joachim Quantz, published here for the first time, is based on a manuscript in the Preussischen Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, whose title reads: Solo Traverso cole Basso Achtundzwantzig Variation es uber die Arie Ich schlief da traumte mir del Sigr: Qvanz The high degree which the art of flute playing had reached at that time is very clearly displayed in this set of variations, a form unusual in Quantz's output. For this reason, this work is very suitable as a study as weil as for performance. The realization of the figured bass and the indications of phrasing merely represent one of many possibilities, and are only intended as suggestions. The source is in places full of errors, and these have been tacitly corrected. Frank Nagel, Basel, June 1974.

When and where did Mozart write his Flute Concerto, and for whom? Was it in 1777 or 1778? In Salzburg or in Mannheim? And how much did Ferdinand Dejean actually pay for it: 96 gulden or the promised 200 gulden?

When and where did Mozart write his Flute Concerto, and for whom? Was it in 1777 or 1778? In Salzburg or in Mannheim? And how much did Ferdinand Dejean actually pay for it: 96 gulden or the promised 200 gulden? Henrik Wiese sheds new light into the confusion wrought by Mozart himself. Wiese, solo flutist of the Bavarian State Orchestra, has made an outstanding name for himself as soloist and editor, and is viewed in professional circles as one of the best specialists of Mozart's wind works. He has focused on the work's genesis, but especially on the music text, having consulted all known scribal copies of the work and all available copies of the first edition. The version for flute and piano also contains a facsimile of the solo part from the first edition as well as cadenzas which stem from the earliest hand-written sources or which were composed by the editor in Mozart's style. When and where did Mozart write his Flute Concerto, and for whom? The flute concerto 'Dances with the Winds' was composed in 1974 for the Swedish flautist Gunilla von Bohr, a specialist in all members of the flute family. The ordinary flute thus alternates with a bass flute at the beginning and end of the four-movement concerto, the second movement is assigned to the shrill piccolo and the third to the sensuous alto flute. The last movement is a summary of all the musical events in the concerto. At the end the bass flute soars to the top of its register, the note D acting as the pivot to many of the symmetries in the work, against a resigned B flat minor chord on the orchestra. (Einojuhani Rautavaara) CD: Patrick Gallois (flute), Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, cond. Leif Segerstam ODE 921-2World premiere: Stockholm, May 4, 1974 Additional to the original scoring for flute, piccolo, alto flute, and bass flute, the flute part in the piano reduction contains ossias for alto flute instead of the bass flute.

A welcome addition to the bass flute repertoire, Dorff’s 14-minute sonata is designed as two pairs of slow-fast movements. While composed as a complete 4-movement sonata, either half may be performed alone as a 7-minute recital work. The movement titles are: I. Sprawling, burbling; II. Sparkling, glistening; III. Under Winter; and IV. Spring Spirits. When Peter Sheridan commissioned me to write a piece for bass flute and piano, his only requests were a sonata-like multi-movement work, and some kind of reference to New York, where we both grew up. Just the thought of a bass flute, with its broad and mighty airstream, already reminded me of the mighty Hudson River: from the dense woods of upstate New York, through the beautiful landscapes of New Paltz and Poughkeepsie, down through the celebrated Manhattan waterway. As I daydreamed how to build a sonata inspired by the Hudson, I thought of its deep primal nature carved by the Ice Age, and the life within the river and on its shores long before humans arrived. I thought of how the river’s magnetism drew Native Americans who honored and built their lives around it. I thought of beautiful trees and wildlife, the annual cycles of ecosystems, and the natural symbiosis between the river itself, the life within, and the life on land spawned by the river’s resources.I wondered what if Thoreau had sat by the Hudson rather than by Walden Pond; I wondered what if Hesse had set Siddhartha in the Hudson Valley with this river as his metaphor for the flow of life and time.I wondered whether the sonata should flow from north to south, or have chronological references. I wondered if I should allude to the many poets and painters who have drawn inspiration from the mighty Hudson. Every thought led to the river’s essence, its own spirit and life — flowing through raw nature, from skinny trickles to mightiness spawning cities; supporting subtle life, and becoming a central commons for human societies. The subtitle Spirit of the Hudson brings it all together.* * *The sonata is built in 4 movements, with formal inspiration from the Baroque: A slow Mvt. 1 “Sprawling, burbling†leads directly to the rapid Mvt. 2 “Sparkling, glistening,†followed by another slow-fast pair: Mvt. 3 “Under Winter†which leads directly into Mvt. 4 “Spring Spirits.†In addition to performances of the complete sonata, either pair of movements may be performed on its own for a shorter concert segment.SONATA (SPIRIT OF THE HUDSON) was premiered at the International Low Flutes Festival in April 2018 by its commissioner, bass flutist Peter Sheridan, with Hyeeun Hahm as pianist.

The cycle of suites for flute and basso continuo, Op. 5 is J.-M. Hotteterre's second important set of works in this genre. The first published as Op. 2 has a special significance in the history of music and for performing practice. The composer added namely to the second edition of the work sufficient information concerning ornamentation and performance. (For the modern critical edition of Op. 2 see volume Z. 13901 of the Urtext Series of EMB.) Hotteterre's Op. 5 published in the present edition is an organic continuation of Op. 2. This fact was also emphasized by the composer himself who entitled them ''Premier Livre'' and ''Deuxiéme Livre' on publication. The ornamentsand directions for performance occur here just as copiously as in the revised edition of ''Premier Livre''. Op. 5, ein Zyklus für Flöte und Basso continuo von J.-M. PRAYER FOR A DAMAGED WORLD is, above all, a very beautiful and innocent melody for Bass Flute, supported by a gentle piano accompaniment – neither of which is technically demanding. Composed as a plea during the challenging summer of 2020, the work is a moving introduction to the lyrical and sonorous richness of the Bass Flute.

Composed as a memorial tribute, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN is a beautifully gratifying slow movement living mainly in the sweet spots of the bass flute’s lower register. Equally fitting as a short contrast on a full recital, the work also soars with cantabile in the high register.

The product available here for purchase is the solo flute part and piano reduction for John La Montaine's Concerto for Flute. Premiered on April 12, 1981 by Keith Bryan and the National Gallery Orchestra, John La Montaine's Concerto for Flute and Orchestra is best summed up in this review from Paul Hume at The Washington Post: The world premiere of a flute concerto by John La Montaine was the centerpiece. La Montaine clearly had a great time writing the concerto, since he filled it with wit and open, songful beauty. The formal design is neatly broken up into imaginative divisions. There are some exotic touches for woodblocks, and bass clarinet, but the heart of the work lies in the brilliance of the writing for the soloist. The cadenza in the final movement is impressively introduced and beautifully concluded..

Schocker has added a major work to the bass flute repertory: an 11-minute piece in three movements encompassing neoclassical, jazz, and Latin dance styles. The wide range of moods offers opportunities to display great versatility on an instrument often relegated to the back of the flute choir. HOW’S THE WEATHER? promises to be an audience favorite.

F.A. Rosler (Antonio Rosetti), a Bohemian by birth, worked as court music director in Ludwigslust/Mecklenburg. He wrote 14 flute concertos altogether the most important of which is the concerto G major, Op. 14. The expanded head movement combines the sonata form with the ritornello technique of the concerto grosso. Right at the beginning, the basses of the Mannheimer-Walzermotiv make it clear that Rosler knows how to use effectively the orchestral technique of his time. Despite all motivic and thematic as well as harmonic abundance, Rosler achieves in this concerto an almost natural musical unity.

“Initially composed in 1907 for Bass Voice and Piano, Habanera by Maurice Ravel was transcribed for Flute and Piano for this edition. Based on a Cuban Contradanza, it features a special habanera rhythm and is generally performed with sung lyrics. In this edition, the Flute is a substitute for the voice. While composing this piece, Maurice Ravel</I> was also working on two works also with Spanish influence: 'The Spanish Rhapsody' and 'The Spanish Hour'. This edition, which can be used for recitals and exams, will enlighten Flute players. Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) is a French composer famous for his Impressionist contributions. He wrote numerous pieces, including 'Daphnis and Chloé' and the famous 'Bollero'.â€.

Inspired by a visit to upstate New York’s beautiful and notoriously haunted Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Dorff has created an atmospheric yet spooky work for the perfectly-suited scoring of Two Bass Flutes and Piano. SLEEPY HOLLOW was commissioned by Wendy Stern and Peter Sheridan as a postscript to the composer’s Sonata (Spirit of the Hudson).
