Sacrificium was commissioned by the St Albans International Organ Festival for what has become one of the most influential organ competitions in the world. It is a demanding 8 minute work that will challenge performers with an abundance of contrasting material whilst still leaving space for individual interpretation. Casken refers to the story of Alban who sacrificed his life to save another Christian thereby becoming the first British Martyr in his programme note and more specifically the act of exchanging cloaks and deception which led to Alban's execution. This idea of taking on a new appearance is apparent in the music as recurring themes undergo transformations, gradually becoming absorbed into new musical textures.

The fourth volume of the section of the Reger Edition devoted to his organ works comprises, in chronological order, the chorale preludes composed between October 1893 and November 1914 in Wiesbaden, Weiden, Munich, Leipzig, and Meiningen. The composition of chorale preludes accompanied Reger throughout his entire career, even though they were composed primarily in the years from 1900 to 1902 and 1914 (Opus 135a). As almost no other composer at the turn of the century, he dedicated himself to the chorale prelude, composing around 100 works in this genre. Since January 2008, the first scholarly, critical edition of the works of Max Reger (RWA) is being produced at the Max-Reger-Institute, Karlsruhe. Its design as a hybrid edition breaks new ground in the methods of editorial practice. It comprises three areas of Reger's compositional output: Organ works, Lieder and choruses and, for the first time, Max Reger's arrangements of works by other composers. To begin the series, the first seven volumes have been published and contain the organ works, which have been eagerly awaited by many.

The Faber Early Organ Series is among the most comprehensive anthologies of early organ music ever published. In 18 volumes it spans two centuries and six geographical regions, presenting a broad and balanced view of the main forms, styles and composers. Within each geographical region the pieces, most of which are for manuals only, are arranged by date of composition or publication. The presentation is both scholarly and practical; all of the music has been newly edited from the earliest surviving sources according to a systematic editorial method that preserves as many features of the original notation as possible while making it fully accessible to modern players. In every volume, an informative Introduction sets the music in historical context. There are also helpful sections on Ornamentation and Registration, and a Critical Commentary giving detailed information on the sources.

“As one of the most famous contributors to classical music ever to have lived, Johann Sebastian Bach's (1685-1750) catalogue is extensive. Moreover, being an organist himself, his Organ works are significant and remain ever-popular to this day. When French organist, Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) compiled the series of Bach's Complete Organ Works, it was well-received, and to this day remains popular with all organists. The fourth volume includes a favoured selection of Bach's four concertos, two trios and his Diverse Pieces. In addition, Dupré's annotations in Complete Organ Works comprise fingerings, rules on technique and instructions on ornamentation, among other aspects. This compilation of J. S. Bach's most loved compositions for the Organ cannot be missed by aspiring performers of the instrument.&rdquo.

Fantasy-Variations on Two Themes (2017) for organ was written for Heinrich Christensen in celebration of his significant 2017 birthday. The musical material for the work comprises two different themes. The first is a short melody by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). (It was a sketch originally intended for inclusion in, but ultimately left out of, Nielsen's late organ work 29 Little Preludes.) This theme represents Heinrich's native Denmark. The second theme is the American folk-gospel hymn Angel Band. This theme represents Heinrich's adopted American homeland. It serves also as a remembrance of our dear mutual friend Harry Lyn Huff (1952-2016), for whom the tune was a particular favorite. Both these themes are developed freely in a set of alternating fantasy-variations. The opening variation begins with a dramatic pedal solo before quoting both themes. The second variation is a lyric setting based on the Nielsen melody. The third is a jubilant hornpipe on Angel Band. The fourth is an aria on a transformation of the Nielsen melody. The fifth is a gigue-toccata on Angel Band. The sixth is an atmospheric contemplation: lush chords in the manuals move slowly and hint at Angel Band while the Nielsen melody is heard for the first time in its complete original form on a high pedal stop. The seventh and final variation begins with a brief evocation of the harmonies of the late Daniel Pinkham (a mentor to both Heinrich and me) before going on to return dramatically and jubilantly to the opening music, bringing together both themes again in a bold conclusion. Ern Dohnányi (1877 - 1960) composed his C minor fantasia in 1892, at the age of fifteen. This work, which is appearing in print now for the first time, is a real curiosity: apart from a few polyphonic stylistic exercises written while he was at the music academy, this is Dohnányi's only piece for organ. The composer later recalled his first acquaintance with that instrument thus: 'My experience with the organ actually dates back to when I was a third-year grammar school student, for beginning with that year I served as organist for the Sunday worship services in the grammar school's church. These were the first wages I ever earned through music.' The Fantasie wasprepared for publication on the basis of the composer's manuscript by the well-known Dohmányi researcher Deborah Kiszely.

'Valet will ich dir geben - Du arge, falsche Welt' Based on the sacred poem of Valerius Herberger and written in the style of Melchior Teschner's chorale melody, the French composer Naji Hakim (*1955) wrote a moving work for choir and organ. The five chorale variations lead from heavenly joy in the choral parts to a charming setting for solo organ; then Hakim moves on to a setting for a cappella choir and a canon for soprano and alto with organ accompaniment. The expressive work ends with a lively toccata which is complemented by an expressive adagio in the middle.

For the first time a completely self-contained organ repertoire is presented which originated in the churches of northern Germany after 1780, and yet keeping up the musical traditions of the 17th century. Thus, a many-facetted, more recent organ music from northwestern middle Europe is now accessible. Focal points of the music clearly are church songs and counterpoint; a fascinating element is the rich chromaticism. The pieces are of medium difficulty, practical for liturgical or concert use.
