Tre Volti (Three Faces) has been commissioned by the renowned ââ¬ÅNew Trombone Collectiveââ¬Â, exclusively existing of top-trombonists from the Dutch symphony orchestras. The world première was given by the commissioners and took place in ââ¬ÅDe Doelenââ¬Â in Rotterdam on april 16th 2011 - during the ââ¬ÅSlide Factoryââ¬Â - European Trombone Festival. The composer aimed to illustrate 3 different aspects of the instrument in as many movements. Effetti e Tecniche (Effects and Techniques) displays a large amount of specific spectacular and acrobatic possibilities and also various colors and sounds by using different mutes. It contains many ââ¬Åglissandiââ¬Â as well as clusters with semi tones andquarter tones, all being ââ¬Åtypicalââ¬Â for the trombone indeed. The Lamento Lirico (Lyrical Lamento) combines the rather serious and noble voice of the trombone with an aspect which not automatically is connected to that instrument: the melodical character. The overall atmosphere of this movement is somewhat sad and strained and refers to the many beautiful but rather dark passages in the orchestral and opera literature where the trombone section as such is used ...The final movement is called Sonata Antica (Antique Sonata) and is directly inspired by two ââ¬Åsonatasââ¬Â for 3 and 4 trombones by Daniel Speer (1636 - 1707). It illustrates the ââ¬Åhistoricalââ¬Â dimension of the trombone: indeed it was the only brass instrument being able to play chromatically - many centuries before all other brass instruments - thanks to the unique slide system which even during the Middle Ages was applicable already. The antiphonal position, the dialoguing motives and the ââ¬Åneo-early-baroqueââ¬Â idiom really pay homage to Daniel Speer: he composed a certain number of pieces for brass instruments indeed and the composer used thematic material from his Sonatas in d and a in various ways, thus concluding this varied composition in a festive way.

Mahler composed his 3rd Symphony in the summers of 1893 and 1894 in Steinbach on the Attersee near Salzburg. He spent most of his days those two summers composing in a tiny hut built to his specifications where he could compose in the meadow on the shore of the lake - undisturbed. Movement 5, What The Morning Bell Tells Me includes the voices of women's chorus, children and alto soloist and is a relatively short 4-minute bright rowdy episode, full of laughing voices, bells and angels. Ohad Wand arranged this great music for 12-part Trombone Choir while studying at the Eastman School and it was subsequently beautifully recorded by the Eastman Trombone Choir, directed by Dr. John Marcellus.

Jesu, meine Freude was composed sometime between 1723 and 1727, most likely for the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. It is the longest and most musically complex of Bach's six motets, originally for 5-part choir comprising eleven movements. Mr. Sauer has done a magnificent job transcribing all six of Bach's choral motets BWV 225-230 for 8-part Trombone Ensemble. This is a major undertaking. All are very worthy additions to the Trombone Ensemble repertoire. This work for 8-part Trombone ensemble of eleven movements is about 19 minutes in length. Because of its length, it is possible to divide the music into three sections and perform each section separately. This music is appropriate for advanced performers. The top two voices have parts supplied in both alto and tenor clef.

Partite is a continuous--that is, connected--set of variations on the chorale melody Herzliebster Jesu, was hast do verbrochen translated in some modern hymnals Ah Holy Jesus, how has Thou offended?. The basic form of the work is rather traditional--a theme played by bass trombone preceded by an introduction and followed by a series of variations. A more fundamental aspect, however, is the shape created by a succession of moods: the introduction is questioning, or perhaps questing; the statement of the theme is quiet but troubled; the three variations following become gradually more mocking and sarcastic, but are overcome by the serene and accepting final section, which incorporates one of J.S. Bach's most moving harmonizations of the chorale. Partite was commissioned by the University of Georgia Trombone Choir, Dr. Phillip Jameson, Director. It is dedicated to the memory of Mark A. Lea. Entrance of the Gladiators is a military march composed in 1897 and soon after was also subtitled Thunder and Blazes. It has become a legendary screamer march for circuses to introduce the clowns. The march is in three sections with some very lyrical moments followed by the chromatic break section featuring the low brass. The final trio section is also lyrical and chromatic at the same time. When played as a screamer the tempo is often taken to extremes.Wes Ballenger has done an amazing job of arranging this famous march for a virtuosic Trombone quintet.

Hill Country Miniatures for 8-part Trombone Ensemble was written by Richard J. Lawn in 2002 for the Trombone Choir at the University of Texas and its director Nathaniel Brickens. The work is dedicated to Donald Knaub its former director. It has become a staple in the American Trombone Ensemble repertoire since its original release. Mr. Lawn explains in the notes, his deep emotional connection to the Hill Country land and to his days at the Eastman School of Music, hearing the legendary Trombone Choir led by Emory Remington and following through to his days at the University of Texas with Knaub and Brickens, all of which inspired him to compose this work. This music is about 15 minutes in length and is for advanced performers. The four movements of the work are: Hickory Cove - September 2001 - a lyrical, somber and solemn introductory movement. Smithwick - a jaunty piece reflecting the Scottish and English heritage of this tiny Texas spot. The Narrows - As part of the Colorado River narrows, it twists and turns its way through the Texas Hill Country. You can hear the gentle waters winding through the cliffs and slopes. Blue Bonnet Boogie - The springtime brings a profusion of the Blue Bonnet, the Texas state flower. A sea of these swaying in the breeze brings out the good old down-home boogie-woogie! A jazz solo featuring Bass Trombone (written for Bill Reichenbach in mind) with solo written out or improvised using chord symbols adds a festive finish. Cherry Classics is proud to be the new distributor of this great work.

Here is a description of this beautiful work by the composer: Reflection and Celebration for 8-part Trombone Ensemble is a musical homage to a man who was revered for his mentorship, musical intellect and delightful humor. The work opens with a somber melodic solo, capturing the noble spirit of this great mentor. Several repetitive 5-note ascending motives follow which is a symbolic reference to students learning and accomplishing under Conklin's mentorship. The bold fanfare style (in measure 32) is presented to capture the presence and tall stature of Conklin. Finally, Conklin's down-to-earth personality and his infectious humor is referenced (in measure 83). Even the fanfare theme returns in a faster tempo, thus highlighting the frivolity, lightheartedness, and wisdom of this adored music teacher. The music is about 6 1/2 minutes in length and is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

* The Prelude in E-flat, subtitled “St. Anne†gets its nickname from the similarity of its fugue theme and a hymn tune by William Croft, however, scholars feel there is no realistic connection, as Croft's work was only known in the British Isles.* Originally written for organ in 1736, this great music is the crowning achievement of a large volume of works for that instrument.* Mr. Sauer's 11-minute arrangement of this monumental Bach Prelude is brilliantly worked out to the last detail for an 8-part Trombone choir of advanced performers.

Nuages (Clouds) is the first movement from the orchestral tryptych, Nocturnes written in 1899 and inspired by a series of impressionist paintings by the same name by James Abbot McNeill Whistler. The work is flowing and mysterious and uses the sky as the musical canvas with the slow motion of the clouds floating across with the tones of color from white to dark gray. Randall Malmstrom's unique arrangement for 8-part Trombone Ensemble uses a family of mutes (optional....straight, cup and bucket) to bring out the colors of Debussy's work of genius.

Joshua F'it de Battle of Jericho is a well-known African-American spiritual, most likely composed by slaves in the early 19th century. Early versions used the word f'it for fought. The words harken to the biblical story of the Battle of Jericho, where Joshua led the Israelites to victory against Canaanite armies.Put into perspective, Joshua's battle is really against slavery and the desire for freedom, like the themes of so many other spirituals from that era. This rousing arrangement in swing-style for 8-part Trombone ensemble by James Markey is about two minutes in length, featuring the 1st and 8th parts and is for advanced performers. The mp3 sound clip is taken from Mr. Markey's solo Bass Trombone album, on base, and includes star performers including Joseph Alessi, David Finlayson and Lisa Albrecht.

Stephansdom is a new composition, descriptive of the iconic St. Stephan's Cathedral in central Vienna. Ryan Diefendorfer wrote this work for the Indiana University Trombone Ensemble for Bass Trombone solo and Trombone Choir (6-part) to be performed by Carl Lenthe at the 2012 Eastern Music Festival. Ryan's work was awarded the winner of the 2012 Eastern Trombone Workshop National Composition Competition.St. Stephen's Cathedral, also known as Stephansdom, is one of Vienna's most remarkable city icons. Dating back to 1137, Stephandsom towers above the rest of Vienna's skyline and has been a constant presence in the lives of the Viennese for nearly one thousand years. Among the buildings that the Viennese find closest to their hearts, Stephansdom is certainly one of themI. GroundbreakingThe first movement depicts the troubles that St. Stephen's Cathedral had in getting its groundbreaking as a church. The opening of the piece marks the celebration of the Viennese when St. Stephen's was first constructed in 1137, during the Romanesque era. However, the church faced many issues—from being destroyed by the Babenberg Empire to being decimated by a fire—before the church began its construction in the Gothic style in 1307. The first movement depicts these struggles before resolving to an open chord.II. StefflSteffl, the nickname for Stephansdom's soaring north tower, is one of the characteristics of the cathedral that the Viennese find so endearing. This movement is very upbeat and is meant to portray the excitement shared by the Viennese for this beautiful addition to Stephansdom, which was completed in 1433. Stephansdom's north tower is the tallest structure in Vienna, and distinctly stands out within Vienna's skyline.III. 1945As World War II was coming to a close in 1945, Stephansdom's roof caught fire from a neighboring building, destroying large portions of the church. One climax occurs at m.30, which depicts Stephansdom's great bell, the Pummerin, crashing down to the ground. This movement depicts the chaotic nature of the raging fire of 1945.IV. Anton PilgrimAnton Pilgrim was the last, and perhaps most beloved, architect who worked on St. Stephen's Cathedral in the Gothic style. One of his most famous projects was the St. Stephen's organ loft, which is depicted by an opening organ-like canon. The final movement to the piece ends in a chorale-like fashion, demonstrating the Viennese's love for Anton Pilgrim, as well as Stephansdom, one of Vienna's most iconic sights. This work of 12 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor BWV 565 is possibly the most famous work in the organ repertoire. It was written as early as 1704 while the composer was in his teens, which could explain some of its unusual features. It first appeared in publication in 1833 by way of Felix Mendelssohn. The first appearance of this work as a transcription and recording for brass came in 1979 by Frederick Mills and the Canadian Brass, becoming an iconic work in the ensemble's repertoire.Ralph Sauer has had a great deal of success with his transcriptions of Bach's works. This work of about 9 minutes in length for 8-part Trombone Ensemble of advanced performers is brilliantly thought out and can be the cornerstone of a concert program.

Nimrod, the ninth variation from Elgar's masterpiece Op. 36, Enigma Variations (1898-99) is one of the most recognized works in the classical repertoire. There are so many adjectives to describe this piece of genius: stately, majestic, serious, solemn, moving, noble, languid, stoic, enduring and sublime. There are few works in the repertoire that bring forth such strong emotions as this work, which is often performed for funerals and for Memorial Day / Remembrance Day services. Mr. Malmstrom's beautifully lush arrangement is scored for 2 alto trombones (optional), 3 tenor trombones, 2 bass trombones and 1 contrabass trombone (optional). This arrangement of 3-4 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.
