The story of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is of a rising star composer, one with a significant gift for melody and a simple lyricism, who embraced the previously unexplored song and dance forms from his father’s native west Africa and incorporated them into his own very European art music. Coleridge-Taylor began playing the violin at age five and by age fifteen wasadmitted to London’s Royal College of Music, where he studied both violin and composition and composed his first works. The simply titled Melody is taken from Three Short Pieces for Organ, a set of pieces originally published in Novello’s Album for the Organ, No. 3 (1898). While certainly typical of the late nineteenth century, many of Coleridge-Taylor's creations display inspiration by African musical elements much like spirituals inspired Dvořák’s “New World†Symphony.

This action-packed piece for advanced string orchestra imagines a scene straight out of a dystopian novel. Under the midnight moon, two opposing forces enter a dilapidated city searching for supplies. An eerie melody embodies the mysterious glow of the moon as both forces scurry and sneak around crumbling overgrown buildings. Eventually a confrontation occurs and the highly rhythmic music underscores a fierce battle. Ever-changing meter and shifting tonality build tension, punctuated with staccato attacks and explosive dynamic changes. What could become of the two forces? Who will come out on top? Its all left up to the imagination of the listener as the piece comes to a thrilling conclusion.

Sandra Dackow Little Known Gem - Grade IV+. Ed. by Hoffmann. This delightful set of works in the keys of G, A, and B-flat major takes full advantage of multiple stops, chords, and fiddle writing that lays easily under the hand and is fun to play. The fast movements are vigorous and the contrasting slow movements are not particularly fussy or florid, though they include some ornamentation. In the Allegro sections, musicians should approach the playing as they would a work by Haydn or Mozart: eighth and quarter notes off the string and at the frog, and sixteenth notes on the string. Stamitz's players would have followed the general rule of the down bow, where the strong beat would begin with a down bow. In Concerto No. 1 in G, the Violin I parts reach to sixth position, requiring high G's. Unusual writing for its time, these passages are both logical and easy for players to find and hear. Cello and bass parts reach high F's on occasion and require third, fourth and fifth positions. The second violin and viola parts do not require extended ranges, making this work practical for an upper intermediate orchestra. The slow movements transition between different keys and requires the low strings to use extension notes such as G-sharp and A-sharp.

Kuhnau's Magnificat in C major is - apart from his Biblical Sonatas - considered to be his most ambitious and best known work. However, as recent research has revealed, there are indeed many other large-scale works among his oeuvre which are largely presumed lost today, apart from those that were published as first editions. Until now, only insufficient or erroneous editions of the Magnificat have been available, a piano reduction has not been available at all. Beyond that, editor David Erler has succeeded in tracking down new evidence on the authorship of four Laudes (insertion movements for performances over Christmas) and to carry out their altogether new placement in the main work. He was able to prove that Bach's Magnificat directly succeeded Kuhnaus's work and that the use of such Laudes was common in Leipzig's parish churches and beyond.
