In his roles as Music Director at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris and in the Royal Choir [chapel] of Louis XV, Andre Campra (1660-1744) composed numerous motets which frequently displayed the influence of contemporary opera. If today Campra is known almost exclusively for his famous Requiem, nevertheless his more than forty motets composed for soli, choir and orchestra are still awaiting discovery. Among these is a setting of Psalm 129, De profundis, published here in a new critical edition after the autograph score. The work was composed in 1723 during the first months of Campra's service to the French king and it proves to be the equal to the compositions of Michel-Richard de Lalande, who during his lifetime shaped and dominated the genre of the Grand Motet.. At less than 20 years of age, the youngest son of the Leipzig cantor of St. Thomas, Johann Sebastian Bach, withdrew from the Lutheran musical tradition of his family: Johann Christian Bach went to Italy, converted to Catholicism there and composed mainly Latin church music between 1757 and 1760. His great successes with operas for Turin, Milan and Naples from 1761 onwards led him all the way to London. Bach's church music comprises a number of vespers compositions, some of them large-scale, including this Magnificat a 4 (1760) for soloists, choir and orchestra. The very diversified work gets its additional attraction from distinctively led oboes and horns.

Little is known about the actual composition process of Lemminkainen and the performance and publication history is rather complex, resulting in a first complete printing of all the four movements en suite through the complete edition of Jean Sibelius Works only in 2013.In summer 1894 Sibelius went to Central Europe, carrying among others a plan for an opera freely based on the Kalevala in his mind. But during this trip he reassessed his composing: I think I have found my old self again, musically speaking. I think I really am a tone painter and a poet. As a result he abandoned his opera plans, but musical material may have found its way into the Lemminkainen pieces which he started composing during that time. Lemminkainen became popular from the beginning and has attained a fixed position in the concert repertoire.Sibelius said about Lemminkainen in Tuonela: The cradle song at the end of the work is maternal love, which rakes the pieces of Lemminkainen together from the River Tuonela..
