Lajos Bárdos (1899-1986), composer, musicologist, teacher, and choral conductor, laid down, together with Kodály, the foundations of 20th-century Hungarian choral music. Through his work as a conductor, he raised the standards of Hungarian choral singing to an international level in a few decades. His compositions were directed towards cultivating Hungarian choral life: they draw on Renaissance polyphony and Hungarian folk music, following Kodály and Bartók. His works, which are models of choral writing, deal sensitively with Hungarian prosody and radiate an inner harmony and vigor. A selection of his most popular choral works has been published with English texts by Gail Needleman in five volumes.

The composer, choirmaster, musicologist and music educator Lajos Bárdos was born on the 1st of October 1899 in Budapest and studied composition with Zoltán Kodály at the Music Academy in Budapest. As choirmaster, he worked with the Palestrina Choir and the Cecilia Choir, which he united in 1941, thus founding the Budapest Choir. From 1928 until his retirement in 1966 he worked as a teacher of the Budapest Music Academy and taught several subjects. His compositional work, consisting mainly of choral works, comprises almost 600 pieces, but he has also composed chamber music.From 1918, Lajos Bárdos was president of the Hungarian Cecilia Society, participated in the direction ofthe Hungarian Singing Association, as well as the Bartók Association. In addition, he founded in cooperation with György Kerényi and Gyula Kertész in 1931, the magazine and the publishing company Magyar Kórus (Hungarian Choir).Lajos Bárdos has passed away on the 18th of November 1986 in Budapest. The 'Four Piano Pieces' (1. Study for the Left Hand, 2. Fantasy I, 3. Fantasy II, 4. Scherzo) was composed between January and October 1903. 'The 'Study for the Left Hand' is a large-scale sonata movement. The eclecticism of 'Fantasy I' composed on 8 February is well illustrated by the fact that his contemporary audience associated it with several composers' styles. The [piece] is dedicated 'to Madame Emma Gruber'.The 'Fantasy II' was written after the symphonic poem Kossuth was finished, in October 1903 in Berlin. It is a piece of Hungarian mood, which Bartok dedicated to his childhood friends 'Misses Emsy and Irmy Jurkovics'. The extraordinary 'Scherzo' that concludes theseries is dedicated to Dohnanyi. The repeated appearance of grotesque turns of phrase conjures up Liszt's 'scherzo diabolique' type.'
