A joyful dispute of the gods is how Johann Sebastian Bach's librettist Salomon Franck described the Birthday Cantata for the court of Saxony-Weissenfels, now generally known as the Hunting Cantata BWV 208. The work was probably first performed with the composer present on 23 February 1713, Duke Christian's 31st birthday. On that occasion the choir may have numbered just four soloists, but it can of course be larger. Bach also went on to perform this colorful and varied work, comprising 15 short movements, several times.

As the cantata begins with a recitative, there is an opportunity to precede it with an instrumental movement. A suitable piece is the opening movement of the 1st Brandenburg Concerto BWV 1046 with its hunting horn sounds, which Bach also used later in other works such as the church cantata BWV 52. The edition includes this movement from BWV 1046a (the oldest version) as a performance suggestion.

Besides the Weihnachtsoratorium BVW 248, Bach composed an additional work for the feast days of the church year 1734/35: The Himmelfahrtsoratorium BWV 11 (Ascension Oratorio). Although in its dimensions and character the oratorio is akin to his cantatas, it occupies a special position as a result of the epic text on which it is based; the text includes a biblical story. In particular, the festive atmosphere and instrumentation of the opening and closing choruses mirror the triumphant joy of Christ's ascension. This is a new edition in the Stuttgart Bach Editions series, edited by Ulrich Leisinger.

Bach's well-known church cantata Schwingt freudig euch empor BWV 36 (Up joyous raise your song), first heard in its final version on First Advent Sunday in 1731 at the Leipzig Nikolaikirche, can be traced back to a secular birthday cantata from 1725. The text is now revised to render the events of Advent - the rejoicing of the opening chorus, the loving veneration and the warm-hearted welcome of the three solo arias retained from the original cantata now all apply to the Messiah, who, as once in Jerusalem, should find a place in the hearts of the faithful. However, their unmistakeable Advent character derives from the fact that Bach contrasts the four festive settings from the secular cantata with three strophes from Luther's Advent chorale, Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, thus at the same time giving a voice to the Mystery of God made man. The compositions which were probably composed for performance there include Bach's famous Coffee Cantata. The cantata is only superficially about daughter Liesgen's addiction to coffee, in fact it is really about her strict father Schlend rian's educational efforts, which ultimately remain ineffective - but only in Bach's cantata. In Picander's printed libretto it seems as if Schlendrian might prevail, and only in Bach's cantata, which includes two movements setting additional text, is there a twist to the contrary. Might Bach's experiences as a father have come into play here?
