A joyful dispute of the gods is how Johann Sebastian Bach's librettist Salomon Franck described the Birthday Cantata for the court of Saxony-Weissenfels, now generally known as the Hunting Cantata BWV 208. The work was probably first performed with the composer present on 23 February 1713, Duke Christian's 31st birthday. On that occasion the choir may have numbered just four soloists, but it can of course be larger. Bach also went on to perform this colorful and varied work, comprising 15 short movements, several times.
As the cantata begins with a recitative, there is an opportunity to precede it with an instrumental movement. A suitable piece is the opening movement of the 1st Brandenburg Concerto BWV 1046 with its hunting horn sounds, which Bach also used later in other works such as the church cantata BWV 52. The edition includes this movement from BWV 1046a (the oldest version) as a performance suggestion. $4.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Carus Verlag #CV 31.174/07. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3117407). ISBN 9790007244996. Language: German/English. Text: Henrici (Picander), Christian Friedrich. The cantata Ich liebe den Hochsten von ganzem Gemute (I love the Almighty with all of my spirit) BWV 174 was composed for Whit Monday 1729. It probably belongs to Bach's fourth cycle of cantatas, known as the Picander cycle. Most of the cantata is taken up by the introductory Sinfonia. This is a reworking of the first movement of the famous third Brandenburg Concerto BWV 1048. Bach took the movement almost unaltered and simply added wind parts to strengthen the sound to the nine string parts (three violins, three violas, three violoncelli) and basso continuo - two corni da caccia and two oboes, reinforced by two violins, an oboe da caccia (taille) and a viola. The following movements (aria, recitative, aria) form a distinct contrast with their chamber music scoring (two oboes or one or two string parts with basso continuo). A simple four-part chorale concludes the cantata. Score available separately - see item CA.3117400. $15.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Besides the Weihnachtsoratorium BVW 248, Bach composed an additional work for the feast days of the church year 1734/35: The Himmelfahrtsoratorium BWV 11 (Ascension Oratorio). Although in its dimensions and character the oratorio is akin to his cantatas, it occupies a special position as a result of the epic text on which it is based; the text includes a biblical story. In particular, the festive atmosphere and instrumentation of the opening and closing choruses mirror the triumphant joy of Christ's ascension. This is a new edition in the Stuttgart Bach Editions series, edited by Ulrich Leisinger. $97.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Duration 18 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 31.162/19. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3116219). ISBN 9790007172244. Language: German/English. Scripture: Matthew 22:1-14. The cantata for the 20th Sunday after Trinity. Ah! I see now, as I to the wedding bidden, BWV 162 was first performed on 25 October 1716 in the Castle church at Weimar. During the first year in his position as Thomaskantor, Bach made a revival performance of the cantata on 10 October 1723. For this Leipzig version he added an additional obbligato voice in the first movement and in the final chorale he added a Corno da tirarsi, which played colla-parte with the soprano. However, we do not know what this mysterious instrument looked like. For performances today we recommend using a trumpet or a slide trumpet. The cantata begins not with an introductory chorus, but rather with a sonorous bass aria with a string accompaniment and obbligato trumpet. The following movements, movement 2 through 5, are also performed by vocal soloists. The third movement, a soprano aria, presents a peculiarity: the obbligato wind parts were not contained in the original version of this cantata. Our edition offers a reconstruction for the flute, made by the famous Bach interpreter and expert, Masaaki Suzuki. Carus Verlag #CV 31.036/07. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3103607). ISBN 9790007244910. Language: German/English. Bach's well-known church cantata Schwingt freudig euch empor BWV 36 (Up joyous raise your song), first heard in its final version on First Advent Sunday in 1731 at the Leipzig Nikolaikirche, can be traced back to a secular birthday cantata from 1725. The text is now revised to render the events of Advent - the rejoicing of the opening chorus, the loving veneration and the warm-hearted welcome of the three solo arias retained from the original cantata now all apply to the Messiah, who, as once in Jerusalem, should find a place in the hearts of the faithful. However, their unmistakeable Advent character derives from the fact that Bach contrasts the four festive settings from the secular cantata with three strophes from Luther's Advent chorale, Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, thus at the same time giving a voice to the Mystery of God made man. Sacred vocal music, Cantatas, Psalms, German, Praise and thanks. Study score. Composed circa 1730. BWV 51. 44 pages. Duration 20 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 31.051/07. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3105107). ISBN 9790007244989. Key: C major. Language: German/English. The original occasion for the composition of Cantata BWV 51 is not known. The unusual festive scoring with trumpet and solo soprano, and the virtuoso demands of these parts seem to indicate a special occasion, such as New Year, a town council election or the birthday of a prominent person. Bach only added the liturgical designation of the 15th Sunday after Trinity to the titlepage of his score later. The text is directed to the praise of God and thanks for the goodness he has shown, combined with a plea for support in the future. The chorale verse Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren is not a typically straightforward four-part setting, but is incorporated into an instrumental trio movement. Together with the following Alleluja, it forms a brilliant concertante conclusion to the work. New, revised edition. In 1729 Bach took over the running of the Collegium musicum in Leipzig, founded by Telemann, and continued the tradition of giving concerts at least once a week with this ensemble in Zimmermann's coffee house or, in the summer, in the coffee garden there. The compositions which were probably composed for performance there include Bach's famous Coffee Cantata. The cantata is only superficially about daughter Liesgen's addiction to coffee, in fact it is really about her strict father Schlend rian's educational efforts, which ultimately remain ineffective - but only in Bach's cantata. In Picander's printed libretto it seems as if Schlendrian might prevail, and only in Bach's cantata, which includes two movements setting additional text, is there a twist to the contrary. Might Bach's experiences as a father have come into play here? $12.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks
