James Grant says, Slow jazz... What musical language could celebrate more appropriately the lyrical, sensuous, expressive character of the bassoon? The three Chocolates, in this version for bassoon and piano, are torch songs in the tradition of the passionate, tuneful ballads of the American 40s and 50s. The first two Chocolates, Valentine and Bittersweet, offer soulful narratives that speak to devotion, poignancy, romance, uncertainty, longing. The third Chocolate, Triple Mocha Indulgence, is slightly less soul-searching, more ebullient, and progressively becomes more animated (a sugar high, perhaps?) right up to its raucous close. Chocolates was commissioned and premiered in 1998 by violist Michelle LaCourse, to whom this music is dedicated..

When you say Mascagni you immediately think of Cavalleria rusticana. This work brought Mascagni overnight fame after his wife - without him knowing - entered the score in a composition contest and it won first prize. Cavalleria rusticana became an incredible success, overshadowing the premiere of his next opera, L’Amico Fritz. L’Amico Fritz can still be considered a successful opera, with its highlights being the ‘Cherry Duet’ and this intermezzo, arranged by the Japanese Kimura.

Stephen Collins Foster lived from 1826 to 1864, until only age 37. He was extremely prolific, with numerous songs that have lasted to this day. I first had the idea to arrange Beautiful Dreamer for SATB choirs a cappella, after hearing Kristen Chenoweth in concert. She ended her concert, in a 1,600 seat hall, with Beautiful Dreamer, an a cappella solo, with no microphone. Given the beautiful melody, text and Ms. Chenoweth's voice, one could have heard a pin drop in the audience. Her performance concluded to thunderous applause and a standing ovation. The power of music. Throughout this arrangement, the harmonies support the beautiful melody and text (rather than get in its' way). Opportunities abound for vocal parts to be showcased as well as an optional solo/duet at the beginning. Sing freely, with pure vowels, crisp diction and sensitivity, allowing the text to prevail by giving special attention to stressed and unstressed syllables and words. I hope you enjoy singing this arrangement in rehearsal and performance to the delight of your audience. Tell the story through song because that's what we should always do when performing choral music. Russell Robinson, Arranger  .Stephen Collins Foster lived from 1826 to 1864, until only age 37. Johann Sebastian Bach's chorale cantataNow my soul exalts the Lord(BWV 10) was composed in 1724 for the Feast of Visitation (2 July). Its themes are based on the Marian hymn of praise (Magnificat) from the Gospel according to Luke.Bach gave the free combination of poetic paraphrase and Biblical text a varied musical setting ranging from the mighty opening chorus via two large arias to an intimate duet and richly pictorial recitatives. Despite the small instrumental forces ofad libitumtrumpet, two oboes, strings and basso continuo, Bach creates a majestic musical language appropriate to the Magnificat. This Urtext performing edition is based on theNew Bach Edition.* Bach cantata with a small instrumental ensemble* Based on the Urtext of theNew Bach Edition* Performance duration of 20-25 minutes
