In Charles Gounod's L'absent, composed in 1873, the absent one asks at night time whether the beloved remembers him in the light of the moon and at the sound of the evening prayer bells. These art songs were originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted them to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing the any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process, the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression, as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist. The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD Kennst du das Land ... (Carus 83.495).

French composer, Charles Gounod (1818-1893) was a prominent in his day, best remembered for his “Ave Maria” and his opera, Faust. 1854 saw the premiere of his Solemn Mass, also known as the St. Cecilia Mass. This work fully established Gounod as a noteworthy composer. Despite being a minor composer to us today, Gounod was famed in his day, so much so that at his funeral, Camille Saint-Saëns played the organ and Gabriel Fauré conducted. Gounod's Solemn Mass proves the composer's extraordinary talent and caught the attention of much of Paris when it was first performed. Famous recordings include that of the Chorus of Radio France with the New Philharmonia Orchestra. For all aspiring choirs, Gounod's St. Cecilia Mass is an imperative, sublime addition to the repertoire.

Charles Gounod, the 200th anniversary of whose birth falls in 2018, is known above all for his operas - Faust, Sapho, Romeo et Juliette, etc. But throughout his life Gounod was also a very religious man. As winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1839, he spent an extended period in the Holy City and subsequently devoted several years exclusively to writing sacred music. For a time he even thought of becoming a priest and signed his letters Abbe Ch. Gounod. As well as several masses - including the famous St Cecilia Mass - he composed numerous smaller works for various scorings for use in the liturgy and other church services. This collection contains 20 smaller sacred motets for 4-6-part mixed choir with organ or piano accompaniment, mostly ad libitum.

Shining rays stream from the 'Messe de sainte Cecile'. At first people were dazzled, then bewitched, then overcome. This is how the composer Camille Saint-Saens described his impression of what was probably Charles Gounod's best-known setting of the mass. The work written in 1855 in honor of the patron saint of church music, soon became well-known beyond the borders of France and acquired a degree of popularity like almost no other sacred composition. In the Messe de sainte Cecile, Gounod combines sublime simplicity with operatic-dramatic elements and a colorful, effective orchestration. Critical edition in proven Carus quality. Score available separately - see item CA.2709500.

In Goethe's novel Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, the girl Mignon embodies the longing for Italy. In the novel, she sings the song Kennst du das Land, wo die Zitronen bluhn [Do you know the country where the lemon trees flower]. Charles Gounod set a free translation of the text by Louis Gallet in 1871. At the appassionato, melodies heavy with longing over a piano part with flowing triplet figurations express the wanderlust for the country where die Orangen wie Gold glanzen! This art song was originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted it to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing the any of the qualities of the original in the process.
