Jacob de Haan wrote this arrangement for concert band, fanfare band and brass band and optional male voice choir. The original carol was written by the Austrian composer and organist Franz Gruber (1787-1863). He was asked to write Silent Night on the 24th of December 1818 by the priest of the Church of St. Nicolas in Oberndorf, who had himself written the text. It is a romantic carol, with nuances of contemporary Austrian folk and Italian pastorale music.

Jacob de Haan maakte dit arrangement voor blaasorkest met eventueel een mannenkoor. Het originele kerstlied werd geschreven door de Oostenrijkse componist en organist Franz Gruber (1787-1863). Stille Nacht componeerde hij op24 december 1818 in opdracht van de priester van de Sint Nikolaaskerk van Oberndorf, die de tekst voor dit lied zelf had geschreven.Stille Nacht is romantisch van karakter, heeft trekken van de Oostenrijkse volksmuziek vandie tijd, evenals enkele kenmerken van de Italiaanse pastorale muziek.

Stille Nacht wurde vom österreichischen Komponisten und Organisten Franz Gruber am 24. Dezember 1818 im Auftrag des Priesters der St. Nikolaus-Kirche in Oberndorf geschrieben. Wer hätte damals geahnt, dass dieses Lied mit seinem romantischen Charakter einmal in 150 Sprachen übersetzt auf der ganzen Welt gesungen werden würde? Jacob de Haan schrieb dieses gelungene Arrangement für Blasorchester mit Männerchor ad. lib.

Le 24 décembre 1818, Franz Gruber (1787-1863), compositeur et organiste autrichien, mettait en musique un texte rédigé par le prêtre de sa paroisse. Il ne se doutait pas que sa composition deviendrait l’un des noëls les plus célèbres. Stille Nacht (Douce Nuit) est un chant romantique et lyrique alliant les caractéristiques de la musique traditionnelle autrichienne d’alors, celles des pastorales italiennes.

The myth of El Dorado (“the golden one”) stems from the story of a powerful chief who used to cover himself with gold dust before bathing in a sacred lake where he threw precious objects as offerings to the gods. The myth was soon relayed to the Spanish conquistadors and inspired many expeditions, although the invaders didn’t bring back nearly as much gold as they expected, if any at all. Eldorado is a mysterious and dynamic work that illustrates the myth of the golden man and the European expeditions that followed. With a touch of exotic influences, the music is varied and rich. This piece was commissioned by the French Cultural Association Lille 3000 as part of theirEldorado-themed festival in 2019.

De mythe van El Dorado (de man van goud) is het verhaal van een machtig opperhoofd die zichzelf met goudpoeder bedekte voordat hij ging baden in een heilig meer waar hij ook kostbare voorwerpen aan de goden offerde. Deze mythe werd al snel bekend bij de Spaanse conquistadores en vormde de aanzet tot vele expedities, hoewel de veroveraars niet met grote hoeveelheden goud terugkwamen, zoals ze hadden gehoopt. Eldorado is een mysterieus, dynamisch werk dat het verhaal van de gouden man verklankt, alsmede de Europese expedities die op touw werden gezet. Met een vleugje exotische invloeden is de muziek gevarieerd en rijk aan schakeringen. Het werk werd geschreven in opdrachtvan de Franse culturele organisatie Lille 3000 als onderdeel van het thematische programma Eldorado in 2019.

Der Mythos von El Dorado (der Goldene“) handelt von einem mächtigen Herrscher, der sich vor dem Baden in einem heiligen See mit Goldstaub bedeckte und als Opfergaben an die Götter kostbare Gegenstände in den See warf. Der Mythos sprach sich bald bei den spanischen Eroberern herum und war der Grund für zahlreiche Expeditionen doch sie fanden nicht annähernd so viel Gold, wie sie erhofft hatten. Eldorado ist ein geheimnisvolles und dynamisches Werk, das den Mythos des goldenen Mannes“ und die daraus resultierenden Expeditionen der Europäer darstellt. Durch ethnische Anklänge ist die Musik sehr abwechslungsreich. Dieses Stück wurde vom französischen Kulturverein Lille3000 für den Themenschwerpunkt Eldorado“ im Jahr 2019 in Auftrag gegeben.

Mais les envahisseurs rapportèrent beaucoup moins d'or qu'ils n'espéraient. la fois mystérieuse et dynamique, Eldorado est une œuvre qui dépeint le mythe de l’homme doré et les expéditions européennes qu’il inspira. I Shall Love But Thee is an occasional work in the literal sense of the word, since it was originally written on the occasion of the composer’s youngest son’s wedding. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)—although no literal quotations have been used. The rather rare combination of soprano and concert band makes this piece a unique addition to the repertoire!

I Shall Love But Thee is in de letterlijke zin van het woord een gelegenheidswerk, want het werd oorspronkelijk geschreven naar aanleiding van het huwelijk van de jongste zoon van de componist. De teksten zijn van William Shakespeare: Jan Van der Roost werd erdoor ge nspireerd tot het creëren van indringende en aansprekende muziek, die in stilistisch opzicht doet denken aan Henry Purcell (in het eerste deel) en Georg Friedrich Händel (in het tweede deel), twee componisten die op teksten van Shakespeare hebben gecomponeerd ook al zijn er geen letterlijke citaten gebruikt. De vrij zeldzame combinatie van sopraan en harmonieorkest maakt dit werk een unieke aanwinst voor hetrepertoire!

I Shall Love But Thee ist ein Gelegenheitswerk im eigentlichen Sinn, denn der Komponist hat es ursprünglich aus Anlass der Hochzeit seines jüngsten Sohnes geschrieben. Stilistisch erinnert sie an Henry Purcell (im ersten Teil) und an Georg Friedrich Händel (im zweiten Teil), auch wenn keine literarischen Zitate verwendet wurden. Durch die eher seltene Kombination von Sopran und Blasorchester stellt das Stück eine einzigartige Bereicherung für das Repertoire dar!

Namasé Rhapsody di_x001E_ffers in several respects from most other concert works by Jan Van der Roost, with its impressive twists and turns and musical allusions to the work of John Adams. A first, minimalist movement, is followed by a lyrical and expressive second movement for various soloists in different ranges. The third movement sees a stark change of mood with a rigid metrical _x001F_figure before a powerful and energetic close.

Met Namasé Rhapsody kiest componist Jan Van der Roost voor het experiment en slaat hij nieuwe verrassende muzikale wegen in. Zo refereert hij in het eerste, bijna minimalistische deel hier en daar naar de muziek van John Adams. In het tweede, zeer expressieve deel komen verschillende solisten en instrumentengroepen aan bod om dan over te gaan in een spectaculair en dynamisch slotdeel waarin een star metrisch patroon centraal staat. Verrassend!

Namasé Rhapsody weicht in mehrerlei Hinsicht von den meisten anderen Blasorchesterwerken von Jan Van der Roost ab und besticht mit überraschenden Wendungen und Anspielungen auf die Musik von John Adams. Auf den ersten, minimalistisch anmutenden Satz, folgt ein lyrischer, expressiver zweiter Satz für diverse Solisten und Register. Der dritte Satz bringt mit einem starren metrischen Muster einen Stimmungswechsel ins Spiel, bevor das Werk kraftvoll und energisch endet.

divers points de vue, Namasé Rhapsody sort quelque peu de l’ordinaire par rapport la plupart des oeuvres de Jan Van der Roost. Le premier mouvement de la pièce est particulièrement inhabituel : un motif rythmique de trois mesures répété par les cuivres sur des intervalles variés. Le deuxième mouvement quant lui est beaucoup plus mélodieux et lyrique. Le troisième développe et élabore un impressionnant bouillonnement. Survient un passage lent et court, dramatiquement interrompu pour reprendre en un dernier éclat d’énergie et de puissance.

Sotto molti aspetti Namasé Rhapsody si allontana dallo stile tipico di Van der Roost. La composizione colpisce per i suoi numerosi riferimenti alla musica di John Adams. Il primo movimento, minimalista ed elegante, precede una seconda parte espressiva per diversi solisti e banda. Il terzo movimento, prima dell’energico _x001E_finale, apporta un cambiamento di atmosfere attraverso un sistema metrico molto accentuato.

Sinfonietta consists of four movements that have no thematic or musical relationship with each other. Each movement has its own character and atmosphere, which displays a variety of qualities and possibilities of the modern concert band. The four movements are entitled The Landing; The Sword Dance; Nightfall by the River and Towards the Future. Together they build into a mini- symphony full of colour and contrasts.

Sinfonietta bestaat uit vier delen met elk een eigen karakter, de verschillende klankkleuren en mogelijkheden van het moderne harmonieorkest komen in dit werk uitstekend tot hun recht.

Sinfonietta besteht aus vier Sätzen, die in keinerlei thematischem oder musikalischem Zusammenhang zueinander stehen. Jeder Satz hat seinen eigenen Charakter und eine eigene Atmosphäre, in welcher sich die Vielfalt an musikalischen Farben und Möglichkeiten des modernen Blasorchesters entfalten kann. Die Sätze mit den klangvollen Titeln bilden eine Mini-Symphonie voller Klangfarben und Kontraste!

Die Annen-Polka schrieb Johann Strauss (Sohn) zu Ehren der Kaiserin Anna Maria von Österreich. Uraufgeführt wurde das heute noch beliebte Stück im Juli 1852 im Wiener Vergnügungspark Prater. Die Annen-Polka ist eines der frühesten Werke von Johann Strauss (Sohn) und das Manuskript soll gar das älteste überlieferte des Komponisten sein.

L’Annen-Polka, op. 117, de Johann Strauss fils, fut présentée, en 1852, soit dix ans après la première publique de la Beliebte Annen-Polka, op. 137, composée par son père. Le fait que tous deux aient écrit une polka portant le même nom n’est pas un hasard. En effet, l’Annenfest (la fête de sainte Anne) était alors la fête d’été la plus populaire de Vienne. Chaque compositeur viennois, célèbre ou inconnu, a composé une œuvre pour cette occasion. Johann Strauss fils avait 26 ans quand il écrivit cette polka. Il n’était pas en très bons termes avec son père ; une rivalité notoire bouillonnait entre eux. Cependant, la création de sa nouvelle œuvre connutun vif succès. Elle fut bissée plusieurs reprises et louée pour ses motifs très dansants. Dès lors, elle triompha sur les scènes du monde entier.

This imaginative new work portrays the rich history of the textile industry through music. The decline of the industry is expressed in the opening slow movement with an authentic 12 bar blues. The second movement uses a jazzy rock style blues to show the optimism and solidarity of the mill workers and the final movement uses a strong vocal-style blues to look forward with optimism to the future.

Deze blues in twee delen verklankt de nagenoeg verdwenen textielindustrie in het oosten van Nederland. Aanleiding voor de compositieopdracht was de sluiting van de blekerij te Eibergen in Gelderland. Het werk begint met een meeslepende, langzame, authentieke blues die staat voor de vroegere textielindustrie - waaraan deze streek zijn identiteit ontleende. Daarna volgt een snelle blues in een jazzy rockstijl, waarin een hernieuwde identiteit het optimisme voor de toekomst weergeeft. Vervolgens horen we nog een klein stukje hang naar het verleden (‘Sing the Blues’), maar alles komt uiteindelijk goed in het krachtige slotakkoord.

Ein mitreißender, langsamer, authentischer Blues, gefolgt von einem schnellen Blues im jazzigen Rockstil: das ist The Blues Factory. Das Stück erzählt von der Geschichte der ostholländischen Textilindustrie, deren Niedergang sich im langsamen Teil des Werkes ausdrückt. Der zweite Teil zeugt mit seinen optimistischen Klängen von der starken Bindung dieses Landstrichs an seine Geschichte und von Hoffnung für die Zukunft. Im wehmütigen Sing the Blues kehrt noch einmal die Erinnerung an die Vergangenheit zurück, bevor das Stück sich mit einem kräftigen Schlussakkord endgültig der Zukunft zuwendet.

The Blues Factory dépeint l’avènement et le lent déclin de l’industrie textile de l’Est des Pays-Bas. Cette bipolarité se traduit dans l’œuvre par un blues lent, authentique et insouciant, suivi d’un blues aux inflexions de jazz-rock. Mais de la nostalgie et de la résignation renaissent peu peu l’espoir et l’envie de se tourner vers l’avenir qui, au travers d’un accord final brillant, semble optimiste et prometteur.
