The present edition of Herzlich lieb hab ich dich, o Herr invites us to rediscover one of the most significant cantatas before Johann Sebastian Bach. Ever since the rediscovery of Buxtehude's cantatas in the second half of the 19th century, the setting of the third verse with its special string tremolo sound effect aroused particular interest. There was mention of mystical tremors and of meditation. Contemporaries judged the cantata to be a pinnacle of North German chorale setting. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3604100.

Johann Wendelin Glaser was born in 1731 in Ostheim vor der Rhon, Bavaria. In 1751 he became music director in Wertheim, a position he held until his death in 1783. The 300 cantatas by this exceptionally productive composer were long unknown, and were only rediscovered by chance in 1910. The Christmas cantata Daran ist erschienen die Liebe Gottes comprises five movements, beginning with an opening chorus, followed by alternate arias and recitatives. A simple four-part chorale concludes the work. The cantata is easy-to-perform for choral singers and also because of its small instrumental scoring for just two flutes (or other melody instruments) and basso continuo. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.1001800.

At the age of just 20, Johann Christian Bach, the youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach, the Kantor of St. Thomas's, left behind the Lutheran musical tradition of his family: he went to Italy, converted to Catholicism there and successfully composed operas for Turin, Milan and Naples. Frequently overlooked are the Catholic Bach's exquisite church music works, almost all written in the years 1757-1760, and which had a significant influence on his time in Italy. These include large-scale Vesper settings with impressive, symphonic-style instrumental introductions, sometimes anticipating Mozartian idioms. Bach's Domine ad adjuvandum me, an immediately captivating work, was written for the opening of Vespers; it seems to be carried along by a sense of euphoric purpose and a dynamic lightheartedness which positively radiates southern European temperament. The work is published in the authoritative Stuttgart Urtext edition, based on the rediscovered Hamburg autograph manuscript. Score available separately - see item CA.3810400.

Puccini composed his Messa a 4 voci con orchestra in 1878-1880. The musical quality, the energy, and the freshness of this youthful work led the composer to quote from his Mass in later operas, ensuring an ever-growing popularity for the work after its rediscovery in 1952. With this arrangement for chamber orchestra (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, timpani, and strings), more choirs now have the opportunity of performing this work without the choir being dominated by a full-scale symphony orchestra. The symphonic character of the work is nevertheless preserved. This scoring offers an optimal balance between transparency and orchestral sound. All the vocal parts (soloists and chorus) are identical with the original version (56.001), so that the vocal score and chorus score of that version can be used. Score available separately - see item CA.5600100.

Mark 10:13-14 speaks of the central place for children next to Jesus the Christ. In a world where children at times are devalued, unheard, starving, and disconsolate, Christ refocuses our hearts on the child. God is often present through the voice and actions of the child, in the heart of the child God's love resides. The anthem is a call to listen to, guide, cherish, and love the child and all children.

Fire, Silver, Gold is an anthem suitable for general use, which was commissioned to mark the quatercentenary of one of the historic livery companies of the City of London, The Worshipful Company of Founders. Through a thoughtful combination of texts from Psalm 12 and from Zechariah 13, the composer celebrates the metal founder's craft in terms of salvation through the refining power of God's Word, as noble metals are tested against the purity of gold. Conveying a quietly reverent awe at this wondrous mystery, the music itself is a sublimation, in a clear two-part melodic design, of limpid harmonies and softly resolving discords that will inspire any choir able to pitch with confidence, and to project with profundity and conviction.

Although the music of the younger Haydn brother was highly regarded by his contemporaries, his music was forgotten in the 19th century and still waits to be rediscovered. One of his more well-known works is the central piece on the present CD, the German Mass Hier liegt vor deiner Majestat MH 560 (Here before thy majesty), a work which is musically the epitome of south-German/Austrian Catholicism and which to this day is still a part of church music practice in this region.
