Frederick Faber's inspiring and encouraging text is remarkably set by Sally Kidwell. Within the piece, there is a mellow reflection on Faber's original words, which expresses how God's love is beyond what we understand of it. The soft interweaving and rejoining of voices give the anthem a drifting charm, as the phrases are delicately pulled and reshaped.

This work was commissioned for the singers of Medina High School, Ohio, Tyler L. Skidmore, conductor, to mark their tour to England and their visit to St Stephen's House, Oxford. The arrangement of this American folk tune—which has had such disparate pairings as “What Wondrous Love Is This” and texts dealing with politics—is beautifully handled here by van den Honert. Starting with sopranos only, the other voices are gradually mixed in as the piece progresses. Once everyone is in, a mostly canonic verse is followed by a full-bodied section that ebbs away until the piece ends almost as it began, with sopranos on the melody above a simple hum in the other voices.

Because of changes in our school's schedule and the taking away of the music requirement in 7th and 8th grade, our choir numbers have dropped significantly. Searching for music that has educational value and that the choir will sound good on (we know that's important for the parents and faculty) I came across Light arranged by Andy Beck. This quickly became a favorite of my choir! The kids are excited to rehearse it every day and the sound they are achieving fits the folk-like feel of the piece.

We are using the 2-Part version. Being 7th and 8th graders, of my nine boys, three are unchanged voices (singing alto as written) and my other six are in varying stages of voice change. Those six are bouncing back and forth between alto and soprano parts, singing them down an octave.
