Commissioned by Manger School Band and their conductor (at that time) Bj?rn Sagstad in 1990. He wanted a calm, slow piece of music. Nocturne means 'night music'. It does not reflect a particular dream, but the feeling you get when you¬?re day-dreaming: you are in the middle of beeing awake and asleep. Nocturne & Steam Train is a two-movement work by Greg Yasinitsky. The first movement, Nocturne, is a passionate, lyrical, dark and expressive statement, and the second movement, Steam Train, is a spirited and highly rhythmic finale. This jazz-tinged work is ideal for recital, jury, or solo contest performances.

NOCTURNE FOR PIANO by Marc Douyon is based on the Haitian folk song, Ouangolo. The main theme quotes this folk melody, which is then developed with various compositional techniques. Original secondary themes and motives by the composer are an integral part of the colorful musical tapestry as well. The work begins with an accompaniment that has the feel of someone gently rocking a chair and enjoying the relaxation it brings to the body. Among various themes heard in succession, the first is developed through variations and tempo changes. Shortly thereafter follow, new melodic fragments and accompaniment styles, a change of key, a recitative, all which bring a new sense of motion. Near the end, the last theme of the first section returns. The work closes with a coda which suggests that the person in the rocking chair has fallen asleep.

“Having been considered as a 'fashionable' and 'cliché' composer of his day, Hahn was best known for his contributions to the French Mélodie. Nocturne for Flute and Piano, however, represents the engaging diversity of the composer's music. Venezuelan born Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947) entered the Paris Conservatoire at 10 years old. He received a high standard of musical education from Decombes, Lavignac, Dubois and Massenet before becoming a prolific and versatile composer himself, writing works for all genres. For Hahn, music was a magical art and his instrumental compositions often contain expressions of his otherwise hidden emotions and moods. Suitable for intermediate standard flautists, Hahn's Nocturne provides a pleasant and evocative piece, incorporating a range of expressions, rhythms and other musical features.&rdquo.

Variations, Nocturne & Finale On An English Sea-Song for Piano and Orchestra Op.60. Orchestral part arranged for a second Piano by David Lyon.
After a brief introduction to the Orchestra, the melody of an eighteenth century whalermen's ballad with verse and refrain 'Blow Ye Winds', is given out, the verse by the Piano, the refrain divided between Orchestra and Piano. Then follow thirteen variations, the last three being pianistic etudes, accompanied Orchestrally. The nocturne evokes the nostalgia of a long voyage and the finale the excitement, dangers and glory of a triumphant chase. In these movements, as well as in the variations, the entiremusical material is derived from the basic theme. The work is designed as a virtuoso concert-piece for the pianist, with supporting Orchestral flashes of colour and points of contrast.

This first print is a rarity: the highly virtuoso, evocative 'Nocturne' owes its creation to an instrument that has only survived as a museum piece. Gustave Lyon, the director of the French instrument maker Pleyel, commissioned Charles Koechlin as well as several other French composers (such as Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel) to write works for the 'harpe chromatique' developed by him around 1900. In contrast to the common pedal harp, the chromatic harp allows for an unlimited modulatory range. Nevertheless, the instrument did not gain much acceptance and remained exotic. Koechlin was aware of the difficulty of introducing and establishing new instruments. He therefore, from the very beginning, had the piano as an alternative of equal value in mind when writing his Nocturne.
