Haydn's setting of the Passion of Christ in full vocal score. The work was originally written in 1786 as a program of instrumental music to accompany the Seven Words Of Jesus On The Cross, for a service at Cadiz. Haydn then embellished the work into a full Oratorio for Lent services at the Cathedral of Cadiz. This final version is presented here for SATB chorus and a Piano reduction of the orchestral material.

Gottfried August Homilius belongs to the last generation of composers of the 18th century who, in addition to the popular Passion oratorios, continued to write oratorio Passions using biblical texts. From his pen a Passion for each of the four Gospels has survived. With sensitive arias, unusal orchestral sound and expressive turba choruses Homilius translated the traditional Passion to his times. It was surely not a coincidence that in Hamburg Carl Philipp Emanuel Bachr resorted primarily to the Passions of Homilius, especially the St. Mark Passion, which he first performed in an abridged version in 1770 and whose music he employed in 14 of his 21 pasticcio Passions. Score available separately - see item CA.3711000.

Unlike most passion settings with choir, soloists and orchestra, this version of the Markus-Passion has been conceived for band, narrator and mezzo soprano and baritone (or alto). The lyrics from the Gospel According to Mark have been used in full, which makes this passion quite unique. If desired, the lyrics of the evangelist can be spoken in any language, to make the work more accessible to the audience. However, because of the rhythms involved, the sung parts should always be performed in German. This special work should be a truly overwhelming experience for your audience!
