Sparkling Brass was commissioned by Osaka Concert Brass, one of Japan’s top brass bands, and premiered by them on 27th December 2018 during a concert which celebrated their 10th Anniversary. The work opens in lively mood with fanfare-style figures from the lower band which are answered by the cornets. This interplay intensifies until the mood calms suddenly to introduce a chorale which leads to a duet-cadenza for cornet and euphonium. The rhythmic mood of the opening soon returns and leads to the main theme of the work, a modal caccia which features various section of the band. A short bridge passage leads to a change of key and a new cantabile theme which isintroduced by euphoniums and baritone. This is taken up by the full band after another change of key and leads back to the caccia theme. A transformed version of the opening fanfare returns to close the work.

Sparkling Brass werd geschreven in opdracht van Osaka Concert Brass voor een concert ter gelegenheid van het tienjarig bestaan van die band. Het werk opent in een levendige sfeer, met fanfareachtige motieven in het lage koper, beantwoord door de kornetten. Dit samenspel wordt intenser tot de sfeer plotseling rustiger wordt en er een koraal naar voren komt dat leidt naar een duet-cadens voor kornet en eufonium. De ritmische sfeer van het begin keert snel terug en mondt uit in het hoofdthema, een modale caccia met diverse secties uit de band. Een korte bridgepassage brengt een verandering in toonsoort en een nieuw cantabile thema, ge ntroduceerd door de eufoniumsen bariton. Dit wordt overgenomen door de hele band na nog een toonsoortverandering, waarna het caccia-thema terugkeert. Het werk besluit met een getransformeerde versie van de openingsfanfare.

Sparkling Brass wurde von Osaka Concert Brass, einer der führenden japanischen Brass Bands, in Auftrag gegeben und bei einem Konzert zum 10-jährigen Jubiläum uraufgeführt. Das Werk beginnt lebhaft mit Fanfarenfiguren in den tieferen Stimmen, die von den Kornetten beantwortet werden. Dieses Wechselspiel wird intensiver, bis sich die Stimmung plötzlich beruhigt und ein Choral erklingt, der in eine Duo-Kadenz für Kornett und Euphonium mündet. Der rhythmische Charakter des Anfangs kehrt bald zurück und führt zum Hauptthema des Werkes, einer modalen Caccia, in der verschiedene Instrumentengruppen der Brass Band hervorgehoben werden. Eine kurze Überleitung führt zu einemTonartwechsel und einem neuen Cantabile-Thema, das von den Euphonien und Baritonen eingeleitet wird. Nach einem weiteren Tonartwechsel wird es von der gesamten Brass Band übernommen und führt wieder zum Caccia-Thema zurück. Zum Schluss des Werkes erklingt noch einmal eine veränderte Version der Eröffnungsfanfare.

Sparkling Brass est une commande d’Osaka Concert Brass, qui l’a créée lors d’un concert marquant son 10e anniversaire. La pièce s’ouvre dans une atmosphère enjouée, avec des figures de style fanfare dans le registre grave auxquelles répondent les cornets. Cette interaction s’amplifie jusqu’ ce que, soudainement, le climat se calme pour introduire un choral qui mène une cadence pour cornet et euphonium. L’ambiance rythmée du début revient bientôt et mène au thème principal de la pièce, une caccia modale qui met en avant divers pupitres de l’orchestre. Un bref passage de transition mène un changement de tonalité et un nouveau thème cantabile introduit parles euphoniums et le baryton. Ce thème est repris par l’orchestre entier après un autre changement de tonalité pour revenir au thème en caccia. L’œuvre se termine par une version transformée de la fanfare du début.

J'aime les formes musicales concises telles que le Prélude et la Fugue, où il y a une idée claire et directe, suivie d'une autre plus complexe et développée.

Conformément à cette idée, cette œuvre se compose de deux pièces distinctes, la première - Transfigured Life - vise à attirer l'auditeur avec son rythme rapide et dansant et sa partie de violon simple et mélodique. Il se «transfigure» via quelques courts intermèdes au piano solo en seulement deux notes alternées pour terminer - qui sont le cœur de l'idée originale, maintenant clarifiée en effaçant tout le reste.

Le deuxième morceau - Still Life - conserve son sentiment de quiétude grâce à une ligne de piano simple qui laisse beaucoup d'espace à la partie contrastée (mais encore une fois simple) du violon. En tant que pièce absolue et non programmatique, le titre fait référence uniquement à la couleur et au rythme atmosphériques ; c'est à l'auditeur de voir la « nature morte » de son choix dans son esprit.

Une note sur les performances :
Malgré ma référence à des lignes « simples » et l'évitement déterminé par l'œuvre des grincements modernistes traditionnels, l'œuvre présente certains défis d'exécution en termes de phrasé et d'ensemble qui nécessitent des compétences et une musicalité considérables. L'œuvre a eu le privilège d'être récemment enregistrée par le violoniste Ezgi Sarıkcıoğlu et la pianiste Rossitza Stoycheva, et est disponible sur toutes les principales plateformes :

Transfigured Life - Still Life, Op. 165 (violin and piano) - David Braid

I am keen on concise musical forms such as Prelude and Fugue, where there is one clear straightforward idea, followed by another that is more involved and developed.

In keeping with that idea, this work consists of two distinct pieces, the first - Transfigured Life - aims to draw in the listener with its quick, dancing rhythm and simple, melodic violin part. It 'transfigures' via a few short solo piano interludes into just two alternating notes to end - which are the core of the original idea, now made clear by clearing everything else out of the way.

The second piece - Still Life - retains its sense of stillness through an uncomplicated piano line that gives lots of space for the violin's contrasting (but again simple) part. As an absolute, not programmatic, piece the title refers to the atmospheric colour and pacing only; it's up to the listener to see 'Still life' of their choosing in their own mind.

A note on performance:
Despite my reference to 'simple' lines, and the work's determined avoidance of mainstream modernist squeak - the work has certain performance challenges of phrasing and ensemble that requires considerable skill and musicianship. The work has had the privilege of being recently recorded by violinist Ezgi Sarıkcıoğlu and pianist Rossitza Stoycheva, and is available on all major platforms:

De hoofdmelodie van Latin Journey is in feite de eerste melodie die de componist ooit schreef, op vijftienjarige leeftijd. Hij bezocht toen een seminar voor jonge mensen die wilden leren componeren - en deze melodie kwam voortuit een taakopdracht. Bijna dertig jaar later besloot Carmine Pastore om diezelfde melodie te gebruiken in Latin Journey, a werk dat hij schreef voor de Senior Band van een high school in de Verenigde Staten. Het resultaatmag er zijn!

Philip Sparke selected two well-known marches from the region around Southern Belgium and Luxembourg as the basis for his March Celebration: after we hear an original march theme and second theme in the bass, extracts from the Hammelsmarsh (Hammelmarsch) and the spirited Marsch der Ardennen-Jager, which has become a kind of unofficial national anthem in these parts. This festive march is rounded off with another appearance of Philip Sparke's original theme.

In March Celebration verwerkte de componist twee marsen uit het Zuiden van Belgie en Luxemburg. Na het eerste, originele marsthema en een tweede ‚bas'-thema, volgen fragmenten uit de Hammerlsmarsch en de meeslepende Mars van de Ardense Jagers, een mars die bijna kan beschouwd worden als een soort nationaal volkslied. Deze feestelijke mars van Philip Sparke eindigt met het beginthema.

Zwei berühmte Marsche aus dem südbelgischen und luxemburgischen Raum wurden in March Celebration verarbeitet: Nach dem ersten, originalen Marschthema und einem zweiten Bass-Thema folgen nacheinander Auszüge aus dem Hammelsmarsch (Hammelmarsch) und dem mitreissenden Marsch der Ardennen-Jager, der dort schon fast eine Art zweite Nationalhymne ist. Mit der Wiederaufnahme seines originalen Themas rundet Philip Sparke diesen festlichen Marsch ab.

March Celebration reunit deux celebres marches du Luxembourg et du sud de la Belgique, combinees a un theme original signe Philip Sparke. Apres l'exposition du theme original suivi d'une ligne melodique jouee par les basses, on percoit des fragments de la Hammelsmarsch (Marche des moutons). Cet air populaire fait partie integrante de toutes les fetes de village du sud de la Belgique et du Luxembourg. Puis vient l'exaltante Marche du Regiment des Chasseurs ardennais, devenue une sorte d'hymne pour toute la region. L'oeuvre se conclut sur la reprise brillante du theme original.

Philip Sparke arrangia due celebri marce provenienti rispettivamente della parte meridionale del Belgio e dal Lussemburgo. L'apertura vede l'esposizione di un tema originale che anticipa una linea melodica eseguita dai bassi. Seguono gli estratti della Hammelsmarch e della coinvolgente Marsch der Ardennen-Jaeger, divenuta una sorta di inno per l'intera regione. Philip Sparke conclude il brano con la riesposizione del tema originale.

Hans Vainikainen (b. 1976) hails from a new generation of conductors in the Swedish choral tradition. His conducting repertoire covers a wide range of genres and eras, from Mahler’s Eighth Symphony to the Swedish DJ Avicii. In 2005 he won the Swedish Conductors’ Prize, and two years later he was appointed artistic director of the Katarina kyrka, the home of Katarinakörerna, one of Sweden’s largest choral societies.

Hans Vainikainen heads Stockholm’s Katarinakörerna with more than 500 singers in various combinations. Their programmes cover both sacred and secular music. In his search for suitable arrangements, his eye fell on one the world’s best-known pop artists, Tim Bergling, known professionally as Avicii. He then arranged three of Avicii’s best songs for classical choirs, intending them to be encore pieces.

“Hey Brother”, “Levels” and “Without you” are now available for six-part mixed or female choir. The arrangements offer a wide variety of vocal and choral possibilities and attention has been paid that all parts are of the same musical standard. Whether homophonic or unisono, they artfully intertwine from one passage to the next. However, for all their sophistication the arrangements remain manageable and easy to learn, displaying the typical groove of each Avicii song within a multi-layered texture.

This work for soprano and concert band was originally written for a special occasion: the wedding of one of the composer’s children. It therefore matches another piece written for a similar occasion “I Shall Love But Thee”. The lyrics are from the book Respiro Neve by the internationally renowned art photographer Luca Artioli who possesses poetic talent as well. The first movement is stately and serene as where the contrasting allegro is much more dynamic and cheerful, requiring the solid high register of the singer. The conclusion is festive and radiant, partly thanks to the contribution of a piccolo trumpet! This work is a wonderful addition to the bandrepertoire wanting to perform with an excellent vocal soloist!

Deze compositie voor sopraan en kamerorkest is net als Van der Roosts eerdere werk I Shall Love But Thee oorspronkelijk geschreven voor een speciale gelegenheid: het huwelijk van een van de kinderen van de componist. De teksten komen uit het boek Respiro Neve van de internationaal gerenommeerde kunstfotograaf Luca Artioli, die ook poëtische talenten heeft. Het eerste deel is statig en sereen: het contrasterende allegro is veel dynamischer en opgewekter en vergt heel wat van de soliste, vooral in het hoge register. Het slot is feestelijk en stralend, mede dankzij de inbreng van de piccolotrompet. Dit werk is een aanwinst voor het repertoire van elk goed orkest datmet een uitstekende soliste wil/kan concerteren!

Dieses Werk für Sopran und Blasorchester wurde ursprünglich für einen besonderen Anlass geschrieben: die Hochzeit eines der Kinder des Komponisten. Es passt daher zu einem anderen Stück, das für einen ähnlichen Anlass komponiert wurde: I Shall Love But Thee. Die Texte stammen aus dem Buch Respiro Neve des international renommierten Kunstfotografen Luca Artioli der auch poetisches Talent besitzt. Der erste Satz ist würdevoll und ruhig, wohingegen das gegensätzliche Allegro viel dynamischer und fröhlicher ist und von der Sängerin ein solides hohes Register erfordert. Der Schluss ist festlich und strahlend, auch durch die Verwendung der Piccolotrompete! DiesesWerk ist eine wunderbare Ergänzung zum Repertoire für Blasorchester, die mit einer hervorragenden Gesangssolistin auftreten möchten!

Elle s’apparente ainsi une autre pièce écrite pour une occasion semblable, I Shall Love But Thee. Les paroles sont tirées du livre Respiro Neve de Luca Artioli, photographe artistique de renommée internationale qui jouit également d’un talent poétique. Le premier mouvement est majestueux et serein, tandis que l’allegro, très contrasté, est bien plus dynamique et joyeux, et exige un solide registre aigu de la part de la chanteuse. La conclusion est festive et éclatante, en partie gr ce la présence d’une trompettepiccolo. Cette pièce forme ainsi une merveilleuse option pour tout bon orchestre désireux de se produire avec une excellente soliste !
