Composer Modest Moussorgsky (1839-1881) came from the prosperous environment of Russian nobility. In 1865, after his officer’s education, he joined the guard’s regiment in St. Petersburg. Here he met a number of well-known colleague-composers, including Balakirev, Cui, Rimsky- Korsakov and Borodin. They strived to develop a “classical style†of composing while at the same time retaining a strong Russian influence. His opera Boris Godunov tells the tale of Boris, who with the support of the people, declared himself Tsar, but totally fell short of the role. The opera became popular in the re-orchestrated version produced by Rimsky-Korsakov in 1896. Tohru Takahashi has usedthe beautiful musical themes of this opera in Selections from Boris Godunov - a captivating work for concert band.
Moussorgsky’s opera Boris Godunov - gebaseerd op het gelijknamige drama van Aleksandr Pushkin (waarin Boris Godunov zichzelf met steun van het volk uitroept tot tsaar, maar in deze rol compleet tekortschiet) - werd populairin de bewerking die Rimsky-Korsakov in 1896 maakte. De oorspronkelijke partituur van Moussorgsky staat echter vol originele vondsten en vooruitstrevende harmonische, melodische en instrumentale details. Tohru Takahashi gebruiktede prachtige muzikale thematiek van deze opera in Selections from Boris Godunov - een boeiend werk voor harmonieorkest.

No one ist das kompositorische Resultat der einjahrigen Studien am IRCAM, wobei sich die Anwendung des Computers lediglich auf die Kalkulation formaler und harmonischer Prozesse konzentrierte, auf die Erstellung von ,,Spielregeln, denen die Handschrift folgte. Grundgedanke war es, alle Momente der Komposition - und diese sind grundsatzlich welche der Bewegung bzw. Veranderung - in je vier verschiedenen Formungen zu reprasentieren, entsprechend der vier beteiligten Instrumente. So kommt jedem der Interpreten die Rolle eines Solisten zu, bei gleichzeitiger Einbindung in eine ubergreifende Ordnung, welche selbst wiederum in sich die Idee der polyphonen Aufspaltung tragt. Diese Polyphonie vollzieht sich auch auf der zeitlichen Ebene; der uberwiegende Verzicht auf einheitliche Taktierung intendiert ein streckenweise asynchrones Spiel, bei dem die individuelle Auslegung des Zeitverlaufes vorrangig ist, nicht die gemeinsame Fixierung durch ein ubergeordnetes metrisches Raster. So entsteht vielleicht ein Bild - von vier Reisenden, die zwar die gleichen Orte ansteuern, jedoch verschiedene Wege und Tempi wahlen, sich gelegentlich treffen, einige Schritte gemeinsam gehen, dann wieder trennen... The lonely one was composed during May and June of the year 2000. It was written for Annika Gustafsson, to whom it is also dedicated. It was world-premiered on December 1 the same year in Caroli Church in Malmo. After that I had composed The Threat of War that was a dramatic and massive work for orchestra, I wanted to focus on melodic as well as harmonic and rhyhtmical processes combined with a inner dramatic content. In this case the solo violin works as a narrator where the piece itself is like a monologue without words.
In the score there are imprinted expressions like racontare (tellingly), piacevole (pleasingly) och sospirare(sighing).
The lonely one is divided in three sections.
1. Doloroso (Painful) - the violin plays almost imperceptly sighing glissandi that forms the basic material of the work. Its character is constantly searching. It leads up to the section Risoluto (Resolute) that has a very determined and edgy expression.
2. Misterioso (Mysteriously) - the materials from the previous section are now further developed. It builds up and breaks down during the course of the journey. Eventually it reaches a climax on a high d.
3. Calmando e espressivo (Calmingly and expressive) - From the high d it is stepping down to a recapture on material from the first part slightly changed and moody character. It dies out slowly with the lonely notes.
