The Berceuse (Wiegelied) of Martin Tytgat was composed during his time as a concentration camp prisoner near the Lithuanian border. While in the camp, he was provided with a bad violin and though at first he was obliged to perform for the German officers, eventually he was allowed to play for the other prisoners. This lullaby was dedicated to his infant son Roger.

Sadie Harrison 's Squish! (King Kong's Love Song) for String Quartet. Composed and published 2016. Dedicated to Cuatro Puntos and The American School for the Deaf. Squish! is a love story, King Kong’s love story. But not the conventional one immortalised in the 1933 Hollywood film - the terrifying giant ape astride the Empire State Building who clasps the fainting heroine, while swiping hopelessly at the planes which eventually send him crashing dead to the ground. This is the American Sign Language (ASL) version which has something of a twist at the end. Squish! was written as Composer-in-Residence with Cuatro Puntos and was commissioned with funds from the Connecticut Officeof the Arts. The premiere took place at the American School for the Deaf (the oldest permanent school for the deaf in the United States founded in 1817) in West Hartford, Connecticut, on 7th December 2016.

Galea et Bellum was commissioned by the Excelsior Schraard music society (Friesland, the Netherlands). The work tells the story of a rare helmet that was discovered in a church in the Frisian village of Schettens in 2015. Research revealed that it had been the property of Skelte van Aysma, a Frisian officer who fought in the armies of the Princes of Orange Maurice and Frederick Henry during the Eighty Years’ War. This little piece of history was the starting point for this composition. As a leitmotif, the hymn ‘Ach wie flüchtig, ach wie nichtig ist der Menschen Leben’ (‘Ah, how fleeting, ah how insignificant’) has been used. This 17th century melody by Michel Franck, inan arrangement by Johann Sebastian Bach, initially appears only in fragments, but grows to full stature toward the end of the work. An ideal contest piece with lots of challenges for your band.

SATB (with divisions) unaccompanied Grodek is thought to be the last work of the Austrian poet Georg Trakl; the title refers to the town where Trakl served as a medical officer in the First World War. Jackson's setting captures the darkness of the text, with an eerie opening building to a powerful climax.

This powerful work was written in the wake of the death of NYPD Sergeant Paul Tuozzolo, a hero whose last words and actions saved the life of his partner. His wife Lisa Tuozzolo, an avid speaker and supporter of her blue family, is also a close cousin of composer Brian Balmages. It was widely reported that over 20,000 first responders lined the streets to salute Tuozzolo one final time along the route from the funeral home to the church. This piece chronicles that unforgettable drive and pays homage to the many officers that fall in the Line of Duty each year.

The title of this piece gives a clue as to how it came about: Jan de Haan took the setting of psalm 149 from the Geneva Psalter of 1562 and created from this simple, beautiful melody a glorious, lively opening work for concert band. So it was that from a psalm and an intrada (prelude) a Psaltrada was born - for you to begin your next concert in splendid fashion.
