Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished performer on the flute. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that his compositions for the instrument are at the forefront of the flute's repertoire, Romance being no exception. After a prominent career as a flautist with the Paris Opera, he was appointed as professor of flute at the Paris Conservatoire, as well as principal conductor of leading orchestras. It was during this time that Gaubert composed, including his Romance which premiered in 1905. Addressing many technical features, including flourishing semiquaver passages, a wide range, emotion, intervals, chromaticism and complex rhythms, Romance for Flute and Piano is a challenging yet riveting and stirring piece for aspiring flautists.

'Romance for violin and piano is a short, reflective piece that exploits the lyrical qualities inherent in the combination. Originally written for a very young but talented violinist, Romance travels through numerous moods andcolours within a continuous musical development of the opening material. At first gentle and reflective with increasing dramatic outbursts outlined by the violin sforzandi and parallel sixths in the piano writing, numerous shortsolo passages in both instruments culminate in a fiery climax. Quickly subsiding into the calmer yet now more melancholy strains of the earlier stages of the piece, the ending is somewhat incomplete. This seems to suggest acontinuous turn of events alluded to in the music.' - Helen GrimeBorn in 1981, Helen studied oboe with JohnAnderson and composition with Julian Anderson and Edwin Roxburgh at the Royal College of Music. She graduated from the BMus course with First Class Honours and completed her Masters with Distinction in 2004. From 2005-07, Helenwas a Legal & General Junior Fellow at the Royal College of Music. In 2003 she won a British Composer Award for her Oboe Concerto, and was awarded the intercollegiate Theodore Holland Composition Prize in 2003 as well as allthe major composition prizes in the RCM. In 2008 she was awarded a Leonard Bernstein Fellowship to study at the Tanglewood Music Center where she studied with John Harbison, Michael Gandolfi, Shulamit Ran and Augusta Read Thomas.Helen has had works commissioned by some of the most established performers and organisations including ENO, London Symphony Orchestra, BCMG, Britten Sinfonia, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Tanglewood Music Center.Conductors who have performed her work include Daniel Harding, Oliver Knussen, Pierre Boulez and Yan Pascal Tortelier. Max Reger's well-known Romance in G major WoO II/10 was written as a supplement for the Neue Musik-Zeitung, which was the recipient of works - particularly songs and piano pieces - by Reger in the years 1900 and 1901. Beethoven's Romance in F Opus 50 has been a staple of Violinists for over 210 years, having been written in 1798. The F-major Romance is a tender, adagio cantabile movement full of beauty, requiring grace, poise and elegance to perform properly. It has been said that it could have been titled Song Without Words, the music being so lyrical of character. 'Romance' may have been written as a slow movement to a Violin Concerto that was never completed. This arrangement by Gordon Cherry is a wonderful addition to the Euphonium repertoire.

Liszt composed the Romance oubliee around 1844 for Piano. It was forgotten until he heard Violist Hermann Ritter at the first performance of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen at Bayreuth. He fashioned for Ritter a transcription of the work for Viola and Piano as well as ones for the Piano, Violin and Violoncello.In this short work, the listener hears the agonies of a troubled soul, beginning with a rhapsodic passage, continuing with a cadenza-like section, then a section with arpeggiated figures, finally settling into a peaceful ending.This 4 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers. With Mr. Sauer's arrangement we now have this lovely version for Trombone and Piano.

Alexis Weissenberg (1929-2012) numbers among the most prominent pianists of the 20th Century. That he was also a composer is less well known, though he wrote a whole series of works, notably for his own instrument, the piano (Piano Works, Schott ED 22923). His Romance for violin and piano may be considered something of a rarity. Musical child prodigy Alexis wrote this little Romantic piece in March 1943 in Jerusalem, where he and his mother had fled from Sofia following their internment as descendants of Jews. The Romance is a melancholy 'Song Without Words', simple and poignant in effect. This first edition is based on the original manuscript. Editorial changes have been marked in brackets.

Sibelius wrote the five-minute Romance in 1903 for string orchestra, originally titling it Andante. However he was persuaded to change the name about five years later by a critic's review. In 1903, Sibelius was still composing in a Romantic style, not the austere sounds heard later-on after he composed the 4th Symphony. Romance is made up of three sections; a slow Andante, a faster middle section and a slow third section. Mr. Sauer has distilled the music down to a lovely solo for Trombone and Piano. This crowd-pleaser will work well for advanced performers.
