Polka-dotsThere are three contrasting types of expression for the bassoonist here. The opening phrase is staccato which is followed (at bar 11) by a sustained counter melody. Finally (at bar 19) both these effects are combined in a second melody which needs very clear dynamic playing.Monkey PuzzleSustaining the sound while rearticulating the notes is important in this piece. In other words, the opening should be played almost slurred. Be aware of the changing harmonies underneath the held notes in the bassoon part.Serious SongLong but separate notes contrast with real legato. The main theme is marked tenuto, so full value for each note, especially ending notes. Even the quavers aren’t very short at this speed. Try to make the richest sound you can like, for example, a fine Russian baritone.Three Pieces for Bassoon and PianoGrade 1Former Spartan Press Cat. No.: SP1161.

This short work is partly based on the well-known bassoon solo from Peter and the Wolf, the musical fairy tale by Sergei Prokofiev. However, the original melody is presented in â??inversionâ??: ascending intervals become descending ones, and vice versa. The middle cantabile section is mainly situated in the higher bassoon register, thus forming a lovely contrast with the other parts. The piano accompaniment is modest and transparent, so that the bassoon is not drowned out.

To this day, Eugene Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments, despite being a violinist himself. His Fantasy for bassoon and piano is no exception to the composer's success. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, Bozza won prizes for violin, conducting and composition, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opera-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes, whilst remaining a prominent composer. Composed in 1945, Bozza's Fantasy for bassoon and piano is a virtuosic work, addressing advanced features including complex rhythms, chromaticism, a wide range and articulation. As music educationalist, Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions, his works reveal melodic fluency, elegance of structure and a consistently sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities..

“André Jolivet (1905-1974) established his love for composition from a young age. This remained throughout his life, and he held the post of Professor of Composition from 1966-1970 at Paris Conservatoire. Concerto for Bassoon was composed in 1954, and remains highly regarded. Jolivet, himself a cellist, wished to explore composition for all instruments, and therefore has a considerable number of works in all fields. The composer's style is also known for its spirituality, and the desire to associate the everyday with the magical, and the human with the universal. Jolivet draws on acoustics and atonality, as heard in his Concerto for Bassoon. The piece requires high, virtuosic skills due to its expansive use of extended techniques. For all advanced bassoonists, Jolivet provides an exciting, alternative piece for the instrument's repertoire.â€.

Drunken Sailor — the sequelThis needs a plaintive tone especially in the upper register where the dynamics are particularly important. To capture the mood of the piece those slurs in bars 35 and 36, for example, might even be close to a glissando. Use your imagination to recreate the sailor’s state of health! The Vulgar BoatmanNot only more hidden melodies but more appalling puns! (Volga Boatman for those not versed in Russian folksongs). This is like a waltz: it is written in 3/4 time but played so as to give the impression of one beat in bar. The melodies need to be well sustained so that we hear four, eight or even more bars as a single phrase. Clues for the musical detective:- in addition to the Volga Boatman, you might spot just a hint of Sailing down the River on a Sunday Afternoon, We Sail the Ocean Blue (H.M.S. Pinafore), The Eton Boating Song and even Wagner’s Flying Dutchman.Last Tango in HarrisEveryone must surely know these thinly disguised Scottish tunes, but can you make them sound like a tango? Bear in mind that tangos are not jazz: the rhythm is quite strict, but the tango character is in the tone and the phrasing. Notice how expressive the occasional shorter note value can be, as in bars 4 and 5 in the bassoon part.Rheumanian StretchesOr was that Rumanian Sketches? This is a chance to play the main melody in two registers of the bassoon. Try to make a good even sound in both octaves. This piece requires careful counting since the phrases in the bassoon part don’t always begin where you might expect. Think of this piece as a song.Four Pieces for Bassoon and PianoGrade 3Former Spartan Press Cat. No.: SP1163.

Unusually for him, Davies starts his Bassoon Concerto not with slow music but with speed and brilliance: the opening is a Presto, initiated by the strings, and only at the entry of the soloist does the tempo relax to that of a real introduction. Out of this grow a big dancing Allegro. The slow movement begins and ends with a simple song, around fantastical ornamentation from the soloist. The finale is again a recitative and dance, with a slow coda. The whole work is an immense show of stamina, poetry and athleticism for the bassoon, set against an orchestra coloured by low wind (alto flute, clarinet in A, bass clarinet, contrabassoon, horns). Bassoon part with piano reduction of the orchestral score.

Internationally acclaimed French composer Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) followed the music traditions of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy yet implemented his own, distinctive style. His Sarabande et Cortege for Bassoon and Piano displays influences of Debussy's eschewing of tonality and Ravel's inventive textures. These, combined with Dutilleux's unique uses of structure and pedal points create a truly riveting piece for bassoon and piano. Sarabande et Cortege comes at the beginning of Dutilleux's career and was composed as part of a set of four exam pieces for the Paris Conservatoire (1942-1950). Yet the popularity of all four pieces remains, and they continue to be performed to this day. Elements like lyrical melodies and furious semiquaver passages make for an exciting piece for bassoonists.

An Album of Twenty French Songs arranged for Bassoon and Piano by Martin GattFauréâ??s poignant love song Après un rêve exists in many different transcriptions for various instruments (the most famous version perhaps being the one for cello and piano that Pablo Casals made in 1910), and provides the initial inspiration for this album of French songs transcribed for bassoon and piano. The bassoon is capable of a broad range of timbres and expression, and it is the lyrical, vocal quality of the instrument that Martin Gatt has always been attracted to. In both his performance and teaching, his emphasis is on the importance of what he calls â??vocalisingâ?? through the bassoon, and for him, music for the voice â?? especially art songs of the 19th and 20th centuries â?? has been a rich source of material for exploring the expressive tonal colours of the bassoon. The treasure trove of French art song from composers ranging from Claude Arrieu to Louis Vierne, not to mention the greats like Berlioz or Debussy or Ravel, has made the task of choosing which songs to include in this album a difficult one. In the end, Martin has settled on eight composers who have produced some of the most appealing music in the genre â?? Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921), Georges Bizet (1838-1875), Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894), Jules Massenet (1842-1912), Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924), Henri Duparc (1848-1933), Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944), and Francis Poulenc (1899-1963). Rather than grouping by composer, the songs are set out in a way that contrasts different emotional worlds and sentiments, from the vibrant exuberance of Chabrierâ??s Lâ??île heureuse to the gentle melancholy of Poulencâ??s Mais mourir. These â??songs without wordsâ? for the bassoon, clearly demonstrate the instrumentâ??s cantabile qualities, varied nuances, and wide-ranging emotional possibilities.

Part of the collection Nine Pieces for bassoon and piano regrouped and transcribed by Fernand Oubradous, Piece is a work initially composed by Gabriel Faure. Quite difficult, it would match the skills and abilities of advanced players. This sensitive piece for bassoon in E flat is quite melodious: the main theme introduced by the piano is repeated by the bassoon who will lead the music from that moment. Written Adagio, molto tranquillo, it is quite slow and nice to listen to. It would be perfect to execute in a recital. Gabriel Faure was a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher. He is one of the most important composers of his generation, with pieces such as Pavane or Requiem.
