This traditional Hawaiian chant was used when master canoe builders called for people to bring trees down from the mountains to the ocean side so that canoes could be built. Now set to music, the words teach us to stand up together and work as a team. An upbeat hook, a spoken word section, and a contrasting countermelody combine at the end to create the ultimate multicultural experience. Download the digital ChoreoTrax for even more fun!

Some history: this song comes from Haiti, but actually refers to the first King of Angola, Ngolo Kiluanje, who was revered as a great king. The Creole word for king (wa) plus the king's name (Ngolo) became Wangolo. It's an authentic folk song recalling the peace and prosperity the Angolan people enjoyed before colonization. This rhythmic rendition, which may be performed without piano if desired, includes optional body percussion, suggested parts for djembe and other instruments, optional solos in the call and response section, plus a final descant that tops off the triadic parallel harmonies. Victor C. Johnson's jubilant setting of the traditional Latin text is ideal for developing choirs. The rousing mixed-meter introduction lays the groundwork for a syncopated presentation of the main theme that melts into a reverent middle section. A gradual crescendo and accelerando lead us back to the driving A section. Thrilling!

Here's a partner song arrangement of the favorite American folk tune that teaches some history and culture as well! The creative countermelody imitates sounds of musical instruments, which many Erie Canal passengers played to pass the time on their long journey through the locks. Educational and enjoyable!

A Christmas classic updated with a fresh Latin groove! Syncopated rhythms energize the vocal lines, which remain true to the carol's original harmonization. A new Fa la la refrain and bridge build excitement leading to the third verse, and a key change near the end results in a big finish. Add the SoundTrax CD, SoundPax, and complete choreography from the Movin' DVD for even more pizzazz!

Three indigenous melodies from the island of Bali are presented in this charming suite for treble choirs. Drawing on a variety of primary sources based on extensive field research by Dr. Brent Talbot, each short song includes cultural background notes and a full pronunciation guide and translation. Arranger Matt Carlson adds simple vocal harmonies and counterlines sparingly, allowing the gorgeous melodies to shine. Piano accompaniments reflect compositional techniques of Balinese gamelan, the traditional instrumental music played across Indonesia.

The traditional Ubi Caritas text is uniquely set as an uptempo jazz waltz. Just one sentence in Latin plus a few English lyrics make it clear that this song is all about charity and love. As you've come to expect from this composer, the canon is a true skill-builder---with a modal melody that moves from unison to two and eventually three independent layers (using descant singers for 2-part choirs). Don't miss the jazzy flute obbligato available free online.
