Changing meters of 10/8 and 6/8 are sure to grab your attention in this contemporary Christmas choral. Rhythmic four-part voices sing mostly in Latin (with occasional joy to the world interjections) and with various choral textures. Staggered Glorias kick it off with exuberance and joyfully return before the final flourish. It's an inspired surprise when the addition of a descant cleverly combines themes we've heard before. Invite a snare drum player to join (part included) to reinforce the triumphant tone.

Dona nobis pacem and Lux aeterna were both written for concert programs devoted to specific themes. They share the use of the techniques of minimalism in their organ parts, enabling the broad vocal lines in the choral voices to stretch out above this instrument, thus imparting a special aspect to the concerns addressed by the texts: the longing for freedom in the here and now, as expressed in the Dona nobis pacem, as well as the desire for peace and tranquillity in the Lux aeterna.

This French impressionistic and contemplative work, “In paradisum†(May the angels lead you into paradise ), was added to the original Requiem by Fauré in 1893. The original 1888 version was heard in Paris in a funeral Mass at La Madeleine with Fauré playing the organ. The text refers to the miracle of eternal rest (“aeternam habeas requiemâ€). In this edition for treble voices, listeners can hear the continuous fluttering of angel’s wings in the keyboard against the beautifully melodic, mostly unison vocal lines sung by the choir. The rich D major harmonies are developed toward the end of both verses and, finally, in the ending invitation to have eternal rest. About the Series: Doreen Rao, 2019 Robert Shaw Award recipient, launches her culturally inclusive choral series, Global Encounters for Young Voices, featuring accessible treble- and mixed-voice works for developing choirs.

A triumphant unison fanfare sounds a clarion call in praise of music at the start of this concert/contest opener, followed by a contemplative, chant-like middle section on a brief Latin text. An accelerating return to the jubilant main theme leads to a majestic and satisfying conclusion. Be sure to add the optional trumpet part for full effect.

Inspiration for the Three Motets op. 39 was a visit to the romanesque church of Trinita dei Monti. On 20 Dec 1830 Mendelssohn wrote to his parents: The French nuns sing there, and it is wonderfully lovely. ... Now, one should know one more thing: that one is not allowed to see the singers. Therefore I have come to an unusual decision: I will compose something for their voices, which I rememer exactly.... Score available separately - see item CA.4070300.

A classic poem of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and the traditional Row, Row, Row Your Boat intertwine in this free-flowing ballad that centers on the fragility of life and the persistence of time. Matsushita's setting of a hymn for Pentecost is a dialog between women's choir and piano: while the choir develops its melodies from the Gregorian hymn, the piano provides a counterpoint with the minimalistic sounds of fourth and fifths, together with short independent motives related to the text of the hymn. Corresponding to the chorale, the meter changes continually, as if floating. The choir is treated homophonically throughout and, in preparation for the climax of the piece it is briefly divided into six parts at the words pacemque dones protinus (true peace bring unto us). One again Matsushita proves himself a master of economy in his use of compositional means; thus his works of new church music are appealing, effective, and they express humility.
