Litany is the first chorus from Edward Elgar’s ‘The Dream of Gerontius’ scored for SATB Voices and Organ or Piano accompaniment in this Novello edition.The Dream of Gerontius Op. 38 is a work for Voices and orchestra in two parts composed by Edward Elgar in 1900 to text from the poem by John Henry Newman. It relates the journey of a pious man's soul from his deathbed to his judgment before God and settling into Purgatory. Litany is sung by the chorus (‘Assistants’) after Gerontius’ deathbed prayer. Elgar disapproved of the use of theterm 'oratorio' for the work though his wishes are not always followed. The piece is widely regarded as Elgar's finest choral work and some consider it his masterpiece.Sir Edward Elgar was an English composer many of whose works have entered the British and international classical concert repertoire. Among his best-known compositions are orchestral works including the Enigma Variations the Pomp and Circumstance Marches concertos for Violin and Cello and two symphonies. He was appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1924.

The Prince of Sleep to words by Walter de la Mare is a languid setting capturing masterfully the absent-minded sentiments of the words; imagery of dreams and the natural world (especially woodland) always seemed to inspire Elgar.In the Summer of 1925 Elgar?produced two songs ?The Prince of Sleep?and The Herald and both were on the subject of death like their immediate predecessor from the year before The Immortal Legions and The Wanderer of the year before that. Edward Elgar’s The Dream Of Gerontius is a splendid oratorio for Mezzo-soprano Tenor and Bass with Chorus and Orchestra. The original vocal score of Gerontius was actually printed before Elgar's had even finalised or completed his final orchestration and as such it was printed without many of the markings that were added in the later full score. Lo! Christ The Lord Is Born is actually the second coming of this carol. Elgar and his wife sent the work out as a part-song Grete Malverne on a Rock in 1897 as their Christmas card. The poet Shapcott Wensley librettist of The Banner of St George set his words to the tune and it was published as this carol in 1909.
