This work is a reworking of the music written by Nino Rota for the film of the same name by Federico Fellini, Oscar winner in 1957. In 1967 Rota composed the music for the ballet La strada for the Teatro alla Scala, in collaboration with the choreographer Mario Pistoni, where Carla Fracci was expected to play the role of Gelsomina. This show has always remained alive in my memory since in those years I began the profession of flutist at La Scala, where I also had the opportunity to perform ballet. The transcription traces the salient moments of the plot, highlighted by the captions taken from the original score. Free of virtuosity, so appreciated by the flutists, it is conceived with the intention of restoring the dramaturgical tension of the Fellini-Rota masterpiece. (C. Tabarelli).

It was during this time that he found the energy to compose his Deux Esquisses or 2 Scenes, and sketched out his first flute sonata.Gaubert composed his remaining five flute and piano works after 1922 in Paris, and clearly his poetic soul was transformed from the earlier years. He took in new forms and styles of compositions such as a Suite, a Ballade and a Sonatine. He also completed his Second and Third Sonatas for Flute and Piano, all of them dramatic works in terms of compositional techniques and grandeur of tone.Gaubert composed music easily throughout his lifetime, especially during summer breaks when the orchestra and Paris Opera seasons were on hiatus and he was not conducting. Peter Benoit, one of the great Flemish Romantic composers and often considered the origin of the Flemish School, was better known for his piano and choral music than for his wind music. Nevertheless, his one entry into the flute repertoire - the Concerto - is an exemplary piece of high Romanticism that combines symphonic writing with idiomatic, virtuosic flute technique. Composed as part of a ‘legendary triptych’ - the Stories and Ballads for Piano, the Symphonic Tale for Piano and orchestra, and the Flute Concerto - the three movements show the Concerto for the tone poem it is at heart. The first Preludium (Will-o’-the-Wisps) begins with a fiery orchestral fanfare, with an equally grand entrance by the soloist that introduces the first theme and launches the movement into the formidable back-and-forth between soloist and orchestral forces. The second, Melancholia, somewhat resembles the Molique Andante in its construction - a clear, wistful theme is embellished and carefully expanded into a full musical showpiece for flute. The Finale (Dance of the Wisps) then immediately launches into a display of the flutist’s agility, moving through various permutations of the theme before coming to an exuberant, grateful landing.

A Dutch flautist of the time, Ferdinand de Jean, commissioned Mozart for four Flute quartets and three Flute concerti. However, the composer, who famously disliked the Flute, only completed three quartets and one concerto. Instead of composing a second concerto, Mozart rearranged his Oboe Concerto, with substantial changes for it to fit with the Flute. De Jean did not approve, yet the Concerto in D for Flute remains as popular to this day as the Concerto in C for Oboe.â€.

'Krystallen', for flute and piano, was written in 1973 for the flautist, Susan Milan, who gave the first performance on BBC Radio 3 with Clifford Benson in January 1975. The music is in three sections, the last of which is a varied repeat, with palindromic elements, of the opening. These outer sections are texturally three-part inventions, consisting of gently interweaving, equal-voiced polyphony while, in the central passage, individual figures are isolated and exchanged by both instruments.

From 1906 on Béla Bartók was collecting folksongs on a regular basis. It was in 1907, during his first collecting trip to Transylvania, that he jotted down those three melodies in Gyergyóteker patak, Cs k, which he both provided with piano accompaniment (From Gyergyó) and arranged for solo piano (Three Hungarian Folksongs from Cs k) in the same year. The melodies were played by a ''sixty-year old man'' on a peasant flute. In 2015 we are launching a series entitled Bartók Transcriptions for Music Students to mark the 70th anniversary of the composer s death. This involves reissuing our tried publications, and publishing some further, new transcriptions that fulfill in every respectthe strict aesthetic demands of the earlier ones. We trust these publications will allow us to introduce still more music students to the realm of one of the great geniuses of 20th-century music.
