Christoph Willibald Gluck's opera in four acts about the Curse of the House of Atreus is based on a tragedy by the classical Greek dramatist Euripides. The mythological plot about the siblings Iphigenia and Orestes is characterized by hatred, ritual sacrifice, and murder and was especially popular during the 18th century. The premiere of Gluck's opera in 1779 was immensely successful.Barenreiter now presents a carefully edited and corrected piano reduction that was newly set to meet Barenreiter's current quality standards. An informative preface (Ger/En/Fr) supplements the edition, which also includes all appendices of the score volume the edition is based on, as contained in the Gluck Complete Edition (GGA).

Rooted in the pastoral mode of Elgar and Vaughan Williams, Suite No.1 (1956) is an early manifestation of Ritchie's lifelong preoccupation with the ritornello as a basis for first-movement structure. The Air is a dreamy, slow-moving waltz with a folky feel, an intense middle section and a reprise that exploits a solo viola in its final bars. A prominent divisi viola sound features in the slow march that makes up the middle of the Intrada, while the Fugue's jaunty theme approaches jazz in spirit.

Vor dem Palast in Mykene. Troja, so verkundet Klytaimnestra, sei gefallen. This movement is, in turns, both lighthearted and serious. The music depicts a young, naive Pandora who, while dancing around her house, spies a mysterious box. She tries to resist opening it, but her curiosity ultimately gets the best of her. When she cracks the lid open and looks inside, all evils escape into the world. Dismayed by what she has done, she looks inside the box once more. She discovers hope still in the box and releases it to temper the escaped evils and assuage mankind's new burden. This movement is, in turns, both lighthearted and serious. This masterpiece, composed by Erich Wolfgang Korngold when he was only 23, was one of the great stage successes of the 1920s and 30s before being removed from theatre schedules by the National Socialists. Rediscovered in the 1970s, it has enjoyed continuing popularity ever since. The libretto was compiled by the composer's father, the music critic Julius Korngold, writing under the pseudonym 'Paul Schott', a combination of the name of the protagonist and the publishing house. A vivacious theatre group comes to liven up the gloomy city of Bruges (here, a symbol of death) and the widower Paul is forced to decide between the past and the present. Korngold was fascinated by this symbolic plot and created an iridescent orchestral score washed in vivid colours. A variety of operatic devices are intermingled as if viewed through a kaleidoscope: opulent melodic arias, advanced harmonies, psychoanalytic profundity and cinematic transitions oscillating between reality and dream worlds guarantee the continuing modernity of this work up to the present day.

Completed while Ritchie was Composer-in-Residence with the Dunedin Sinfonia in 1993, Boum is named after a mysterious echo heard by characters in E.M. Forster's novel A Passage to India. The echo comes to symbolise the mysteries of life and death, and was a starting point to a general theme of existentialism and human struggle that pervades Ritchie's symphony. An eclectic range of influences can be heard across Boum's four movements. A languid, Eastern-sounding violin theme in the first movement is influenced by gamelan music, referencing the pelog scale. Inspired by traditional music of the Cook Islands, the jaunty second movement is a vigorous scherzo dominated by the sound of log-drum and tom-toms. The third movement is a lament for the victims of the Bosnian war, its evocative opening inspired by the wailing of a Maori karanga, while the fourth movement can be thought of as a symphonic dance, its pulse and motivic ideas reminiscent of rock music.
