Marcel Lanquetuit (1894-1985) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before becoming the organist at the church of Saint-Godard in Rouen. As well as being a prominent organist of his time, Lanquetuit was a renowned composer, but chose to improvise rather than write. A few of his notated compositions remain, however, including the grand and mighty Toccata in D Major, published in 1927. Toccata in D Major is typical of the French style and is dedicated to Lanquetuit's first teacher, Albert Dupre. The incessant, staccato chords and memorable melody create a toccata for organ like no other, making for an essential addition to the advanced organist's repertoire.

Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) ranks among the major German organ composers of the 20th century, being an excellent organist himself. Many of his more than 100 organ works deal with themes of the Gregorian chorale. The chorale's modal diatonicism which is freer and different than the later major-minor tonality establishes a perfect symbiosis with the free tonality of the contemporary composer. In the five-movement chorale partita, the more than 1,000 years old Mixolydian Whitsun Sequence of Hrabanus Maurus (9th century) is used in an imaginative and formally varied way: as a virtuoso toccata, in the second movement 'ostinato' as a strict trio setting over a seven-bar ostinato in the pedal, as a capriciously playful 'bicinium', and as a meditative, harmonically appealing 'arioso'. The fifth movement (fantasia ricercare) displays brilliant full-handed chords and virtuoso passages as well as a fugato in the middle section. A rewarding concert piece for Whitsun, with an excellent possibility of virtuoso interpretation and colourful registration.

Ulrich Rasches erste Orgelsonate entstand im Mai und Juni des Jahres 2011. Es ist ein Zufall, dass die acht Buchstaben des Namens ,,Schadach vollstandig in Noten umsetzbar sind. Diese Tonfolge beherrscht alle drei Satze der Sonate: Das Prelude, als erster Satz, ist formal in Sonatenhauptsatzform gestaltet. Das Achttonmotiv leitet den Satz quasi leitmotivisch ein. Ein toccatenhafter Ubergang fuhrt zum zweiten Thema, das als Ruhepol bitonal daherkommt. Immer wieder wird die Toccata-Uberleitung eingeschoben und entwickelt sich beinahe zu einem dritten Thema, das den Satz virtuos abschliesst. Die Canzone ist ein ruhiger und entspannter Satz, der als Achttonmotiv in Form von funf Variationen verandert wird. Dem Satz wohnt eine durchaus schmerzliche Gefuhlswelt (doloroso) inne, wird dann jedoch lyrischer und endet in spharischer Verklarung. Dieser Satz erfahrt vielfaltige Stimmungen, die vom Organisten sehr farbenreich registriert werden sollten. Die abschliessende Toccata ist hochvirtuos und von feurigem Charakter. Ein sehr leidenschaftlicher Mittelteil gipfelt in einen hochdramatischen Exkurs. Es folgt erneut der erste Teil, der in eine Stretta-Coda mundet, und den Satz fulminant beschliesst.

Man that is born of woman hath but a short time to live is one of the central biblical texts dealing with the transitoriness of human existence. Leopold Hofmann, Kapellmeister at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna from 1772 to 1793, where W. A. Mozart was his church music assistant, also set this strongly expressive text. Hofmann's setting, in C minor, offers an austere harmony, characterized by suspensions in a homophonic, through-composed four-part vocal setting (soloists or SATB choir), reinforced only by two trombones and organ continuo. Four concise instrumental transitional passages between the individual verses relieve the pathos laden Viennese church style of this composition. With its tragic air, in some passages it closely resembles Mozart's Requiem K. 626. For this first edition, the two trombone parts are available both in the original clef and in alto clef. The figured bass has been realized so that the piece can also be performed without trombones, with only organ accompaniment. For a performance this piece could easily be combined with the Salve Regina by Pietro Cassati (Carus 27.703) from the Vienna series. Score available separately - see item CA.2770500.
