The oldest extant organ music manuscripts in Transylvania date from the end of the 17th century and are attributableto Daniel Croner. During his student years, Croner compiled two organ tablature books, one in Breslau in 1681, theother in Wittenberg in 1682, a third, supposedly compiled in Kronstadt in 1675 and a fourth book, dating from 1685. The manuscripts are in good condition. They are written inGerman organ tablature and contain works by Croner as weil as by other contemporaries.

The first piece “Sicut ros Hermon†(Psalm 133) meditates on the path God’s mercy takes, whereby the initial slow descending harmonic sequences develop into an emphatic song followed by a tender chorale-like coda. “Si sumpsero pennas aurorae†(Psalm 139) relates to a highly poetic, consolatory but also admonishing image of the psalm: As far as our wings may carry us, God’s hand will take hold of us. We cannot escape his mercy or his judgement. At the end of this striking movement the music conveys almost haptic moments; one can sense the mighty ‘hand’ by means of the tutti sound. Finally the music becomes as calm as at the start of this piece, though dialogue-like figurations convey repercussions of what was experienced and acknowledged.

Daniel Burton's volume of practical-yet-creative hymn arrangements allows for the slight use of optional pedal or performance with manuals alone. All the tunes appear in numerous hymnals, and the settings vary in character to make effective preludes, offertories, and postludes.

Fantasy-Variations on Two Themes (2017) for organ was written for Heinrich Christensen in celebration of his significant 2017 birthday. The musical material for the work comprises two different themes. The first is a short melody by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). (It was a sketch originally intended for inclusion in, but ultimately left out of, Nielsen's late organ work 29 Little Preludes.) This theme represents Heinrich's native Denmark. The second theme is the American folk-gospel hymn Angel Band. This theme represents Heinrich's adopted American homeland. It serves also as a remembrance of our dear mutual friend Harry Lyn Huff (1952-2016), for whom the tune was a particular favorite. Both these themes are developed freely in a set of alternating fantasy-variations. The opening variation begins with a dramatic pedal solo before quoting both themes. The second variation is a lyric setting based on the Nielsen melody. The third is a jubilant hornpipe on Angel Band. The fourth is an aria on a transformation of the Nielsen melody. The fifth is a gigue-toccata on Angel Band. The sixth is an atmospheric contemplation: lush chords in the manuals move slowly and hint at Angel Band while the Nielsen melody is heard for the first time in its complete original form on a high pedal stop. The seventh and final variation begins with a brief evocation of the harmonies of the late Daniel Pinkham (a mentor to both Heinrich and me) before going on to return dramatically and jubilantly to the opening music, bringing together both themes again in a bold conclusion. I. Floral Prelude on Leucanthemum Vulgare; II. Floral Prelude on Zehenspitzen durch die Tulpen; III. Floral Prelude on La Rose Jaune 14 page book Published by: Dunstan House Composer's Note: Organ preludes are frequently heard in religious services as well as organ recitals, but are commonly based on the tunes of hymns or chorales. Adapting the prelude form to tunes of a more secular nature introduces some slightly irreverent humor into the mix. These are called floral preludes rather than choral preludes because each of the tunes includes the name of a flower either in its title or its lyric (Daisy, Daisy give me your answer, do; Tiptoe Through the Tulips, and The Yellow Rose of Texas).

The origins of Marcel Dupre's Offertoire Il est ne, le divin Enfant lie in a gift from father to daughter. Marguerite (1909-63), a very capable pianist, married in 1948 and moved with her husband to Chevire-le-Rouge, near Angers. The church there had, according to Marguerite, a poor organ and no organist. She agreed to undertake the role, and in anticipation of playing for the Midnight Mass of Christmas in that same year, she asked her father to write a short offertoire in the style of Daquin. Marcel Dupre kindly arranged to have a small organ relocated from their residence in Meudon and the registration instructions in the score match the specification of this instrument. Our edition includes the specification of the Louis Bonn organ as well as minor editorial commentary. We are grateful for permission granted from Marcel Dupre's descendents for permission to make this work available to the general public.

The Orgelbüchlein Project is a collective composition project aiming to complete Bach's unfinished manuscript known as 'Orgelbüchlein'. In the 'Little Organ Book', Bach laid out a complete hymnal of short organ chorale preludes, 164 in all, but only completed 46 of them. Why the remaining 118 were left as blank pages, with only a title at the head, remains a mystery, but they inspried organists William Whitehead to found the Orgelbüchlein Project, in which contemporary composers are invited to contribute a piece to completing the collection. The resulting collection, to be published in six volumes, represents a cross-section of the most interesting composers at work today across Europe.More information about the project is available at www.orgelbuechlein.comList of Composers
