Thomas Adès's Violin Concerto Concentric Paths, written in 2005, is one of the most important additions to the violin concerto repertoire since Ligeti's. Cast in three contrasting movements?each linked by a preoccupation with circling musical figures? the concerto, subtitled Concentric Paths now occupies a place in standard repertoire. Two lithe, rhythmically driven movements, Rings and Rounds bookend Paths, an intensely emotional and gritty exploration of passacaglia-like sequences, which peaks in a lyrical outpouring of exceptional beauty. This is the violin part and piano reduction. In just 20 minutes, this three-movement piece does something magical. The way it swirls ethereally in the first movement, exerts a tragic and vice-like grip in the chaconne-like second part and finally propels you into the uninhibited flight of the finale is like being spun into an infinite space. “Being Russian born I have a strong connection to the ballet scores of Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Stravinsky, and as a result in theWild Swans, more than in any other work of mine, I allowed myself the freedom to roam through 200 years of musical genres, ranging from Hungarian Operetta through folk music and even including the influences of jazz and popular music,†says Elena Kats-Chernin. The full-length work, which premiered in Sydney in 2003, was written for choreographer Meryl Tankard after the two artists had already worked together for the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games, and became one of the composer's greatest successes. Many excerpts in various arrangements have a concert life of their own today - including the world-renowned Eliza Aria. Arranged by the composer in 2004 for violin and piano after the original orchestral version, the half-hour suite comprises ten characteristic movements: Green Leaf Prelude, Eliza Aria, Brothers, Wicked Witch (piano solo), Magic Spell Tango, Glow Worms, Darkness of the Forest, Eliza and the Prince, Mute Princess, Transformation.

Other Finnish works for violin contains twelve pieces for violin and piano. Though brief in duration, most of them were written for concert use, being rich and expressive and, in some cases, technically quite demanding. Others are delightful salon pieces. This volume was compiled by violinist Mirka Malmi and edited by her with pianist Tiina Karakorpi. Many of the women of Finnish origin who wrote music in the 19th and early 20th century were cosmopolitan by nature. They studied and found employment in the cultural metropolises of central Europe. Because of their gender, they generally had no opportunities for employment in national cultural institutions in Finland. Their music was mainly published outside Finland, and in most cases they enjoyed a broad network of connections, an expansive cultural sphere and a successful career.

The Violin Concerto in E minor, op. 64, and the Sonata in F minor, op. 4, are the only works for solo violin that Mendelssohn had had printed during his lifetime. However, his complete oeuvre includes other completed or fragmentary compositions, including two further concertos and several unfinished sonatas and other individual pieces. He himself had an extraordinary command of the violin and entrusted the instrument in several other works, such as the Octet op. 20 or the concert aria Infelice! - Ah, ritorno, eta dell'oro, with special tasks. Nevertheless, with regard to details of playing technique, he usually sought advice from solo violinist friends, first from Eduard Ritz, then, after Ritz's early death, from Ferdinand David. The present volume contains all of the completed and fragmentary compositions for violin and piano that have survived - from the early Prelude and Fugue in D and G minor from Zelter's practice book (1820), which can be assigned without doubt, through to the Sonata in F major (1838) in their various versions.

When composing his Spanish Dances (HN 1370), the composer and violin virtuoso Sarasate united existing material - folk songs and songs by well-known composers - with his own uniquely charming musical language. The two Dances op. 22, “Romanza andaluza†and “JotaNavarra,†were completed in 1878 during Sarasate's first concert tour through Scandinavia. After their initial performances, the lyrical “Romanza†soon outstripped its brilliant sister piece in popularity, and thereafter it was one of Sarasate's compositions that he played most often himself. Since then, this piece has lost nothing of its charm, and it is now available as a stand-alone edition in the Henle catalogue.

Mikko Heiniö's Alla madre (2007) abandons the traditional virtuoso concerto concept: here a large orchestra engages in dialogue with a solo violin. The first movement is called Arrivo, “Arrival: the soloist literally arrives later, and by degrees, playing his/her first two solos offstage. Even then the orchestra continues to take the initiative for a long time. Not until the second movement, entitled Aura, “Air or Wind, does the initiative pass to the solo violin as it sets light to notes in the orchestra harmony like individual lamps. And not until the end of the second movement and the beginning of the third does the solo violin play completely on its own. The title of the first movement, “Arrival, underlines the event, the dramaturgy, whereas that of the second movement, “Aura, alludes to the texture and the shimmering space. The third movement is the most strongly emotional, as the name Carezza, “Caress suggests. This product includes the solo part and the piano reduction (B4 sized). The orchestral material is available from the publisher. Claude Debussy composed two chamber music works for the clarinet. He wrote his Première Rhapsodie and his Petite Pièce as mandatory pieces for the wind competitions at the Paris Conservatoire. With their lyrical tone colours and focus on cantabile melodies, Debussy's sound ideal is evident in both pieces as if under a burning glass. Both are now also available for violin and piano, arranged by pianist and composer Dejan Lazic.

When Weber offered the sonatas for violin and piano to the publisher Andre von Offenbach in 1810, the latter refused to print them because they were 'too good and demanding'. In order to reach as large a target group of music-making amateurs as possible, editors at that time increasingly selected only easily playable works. Fortunately, these sonatas nevertheless found their way into the repertoire. This is a practical edition in two volumes based on the text of the Weber Complete Edition.

Unlike Bach and Chopin, Claude Debussy (1862-1918) wrote his twenty-four Préludes for solo piano without a clearly organized pattern of key relationships. They were written from December 1909 to April 1913, in two sets, with twelve preludes to each volume. Jane Mortier delivered the premiere of the first volume on May 3, 1911, at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. Walter Morse Rummel gave the first complete performance of the second volume on June 12, 1913, at the Aeolian Hall in London. Prelude No. 5 from Book 2, subtitled Bruyéres, bears similarity to another of his works for piano, La Fille aux cheveux de lin (The Girl with the Flaxen Hair). The pianist Marguerite Long, a friend of the composer, suggested that it sounded reminiscent of the mingling scent of sea mist and pines. French composer and arranger Lucien Garban completed this transcription of No. 5 from Book 2 (Bruyères) for violin and piano in 1926. Reprint edition.

The Kreutzer Sonata was originally dedicated not to Rudolphe Kreutzer (who never performed it) but to George Bridgetower, a famed 18th-century Afro-European concert violinist. In an early draft, Beethoven jokingly labeled the piece in starkly racialized terms: Sonata Mulattica composed for the mulatto Brischdauer, big wild mulatto composer.Beethoven and Bridgetower performed the premiere, which was by all accounts a success, and even featuring some improvised embellishment by the violinist. While celebrating afterwards, the two quarreled about what Beethoven construed as Bridgetower's insult of a female acquaintance; the composer then revoked the original dedication, adding Kreutzer's name instead. The work gained acclaim, while Bridgetower's career languished; he eventually died in poverty.Bridgetower has been the subject of considerable research and speculation, most notably in poet Rita Dove's book, Sonata Mulattica. From our 21st-century vantage, considering Bridgetower's unique circumstance, we can only see him as an ambiguous figure who, in embodying difference, provoked inspiration, fantasy, desire, anger and, finally, erasure. My piece is a collection of imaginings about George Bridgetower. It is not programmatic, but it takes on an episodic character, assembled from contrasting fragments. The dance rhythms, recurring figures and gestural contours are intended to feature the embodied expertise and expressivity of the performers, who at times must access liminal sounds and execute complex synchronies. I am grateful to Jenny Koh and Shai Wosner for involving me in their beautiful, virtuosic music-making.

The simple, uncomplicated texture, in which the composer brings the violin to the fore, does not, however, mean that the music is easily accessible to the performer, who has to play at a very fast tempo, with a frequent use of double stops stylized in the folk manner and with varied articulation. All these musical devices form a test of virtuosity for the performer that only a virtuoso-composer can set.
