Danse Macabre, or Dance of Death, is one of the most famous works by Camille Saint-Saëns. The composition is based on the poem of the same name by Henri Cazalis (1840-1909).The dance of death is musically represented with various effects, starting with twelve strokes of the clock - which of course suggest midnight. Then dissonant sounds and a somewhat wistful waltz melody follow. A thematic build-up full of tempo changes leads to an intense majestuoso, which ends abruptly, after which a melancholy farewell melody takes over. This wonderful symphonic poem appeals to everyoneâ??s imagination - as it will in this expert arrangement for accordion orchestra.

There are very few composers who have left such a comprehensive oeuvre covering all genres as Camille Saint-Saens. His vocal music, however, has rather fallen into oblivion - if one leaves aside his 'indestructible' Christmas oratorio (Oratorio de Noel, Opus 12). But apart from that, Saint-Saens, who worked as an organist at various churches from 1852, composed a number of little church music works: settings for different instrumentations, certainly destined to be used in services, including his Ave verum for four-part choir (including organ without pedal ad lib.). It is a simple, yet harmonically rich setting which constitutes a valuable addition to the choral repertoire and an evocative alternative to the common Ave settings.

Psalm 137 Super flumina Babylonis also known as By the rivers of Babylon was an inspiration for many composers including Camille Saint-Saëns. He repeatedly occupied himself with his psalm motet for solo soprano, mixed choir, saxophone quartet, string orchestra and organ, originally composed in 1854. Two of the four versions â?? the first version in Latin and a much later version in English for alto solo, SATB choir and piano â?? are now available for the first time in Urtext performing editions taking a meticulous account of all the sources.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s overpowering legacy caused many subsequent composers to avoid writing string quartets at all. Saint-Saëns was no exception in this respect and waited until 1899 and 1918 to produce his two contributions to the genre. Couched in classicism, they relate in form and style to early 19th-century French quartets and to a titan of the genre: Joseph Haydn.Saint-Saëns’ string quartets appear here for the first time in a scholarly-critical edition. It is also the first edition to contain the original version of the Finale to String Quartet No. 2 in score and parts. An informative Introduction is included in the study score to complete this volume of important French chamber music, based on the Urtext from “Camille Saint-Saëns – Complete Edition of the Instrumental Worksâ€.

It is a small music history sensation: Thanks to Yves Grard an unknown and unpublished manuscript penned by Camille Saint-Saëns has been unearthed in the Mdiathèque Jean Renoir in Dieppe in France. It is the top four instrumental parts which make this manuscript something of a sensation. Placed under each other are â??Saxophone Soprano en Si bâ?, â??Saxophone Alto en Mi bâ?, â??Saxophone Tnor en Si bâ? and â??Saxophone Baryton en Mi bâ?, strings, soprano solo with chorus and organ. Musical history has hitherto credited Jean-Baptiste Singele (1812â??1875) with having written the first saxophone quartet, his opus 53, which he completed in 1857. Now this historiography clearly has to be revised. The date 1854 has been found under the first page of the treasure from Dieppe, which is pasted over and also sewn, meaning that Saint-Saënsâ?? work was written three years earlier than that of Singele. In contrast to Singele, Saint-Saëns does not have the wind instruments taking solo parts but rather uses their tonal colour to depict textual moods and nuances. On the one hand the saxophones accompany the choral parts (certainly singable by amateurs) and support the human voices in fugal passages. On the other hand, they take the melody in the purely orchestral passages.Saint-Saëns wrote the motet in the period when he had taken up his first permanent appointment as organist at the Church of Saint-Merri in Paris. He revised the work several times over the decades, changing the motifs at the beginning, correcting obvious mistakes, reworking the ending, eventually changing the instrumentation several times and even â?? probably in the final stage â?? replacing the Latin text with an English one. Today, three-and-a-half versions have been handed down, one of them stopping after just a few pages. The compositional steps have been successfully reconstructed by means of detailed detective work. Furthermore, the first saxophone version (BA 11305) and the last English piano version (BA 11309) have been edited to produce a scholarly-critical edition. The present edition of the English version for soprano solo, choir and piano (BA 11309) serves both as a full score and as a vocal score due to the instrumentation.

In his poem Soiree en mer, Victor Hugo describes how the sea can be perceived very differently by two lovers at the same time in the same place. While the man perceives the deepening shadows on the dancing waves, the woman marvels at the stars shining ever brighter in the firmament. In nature, as in the words of the poem, the painful ambiguity that represents life at its core can be experienced. Like no other poet, Hugo captures this almost unbearable simultaneity of living and dying, of love and suffering. Saint-Saens translates this into music - probably the most ephemeral and contemporary of all art forms. His balanced musical form leaves plenty of room for the poetry and his subtle variations in timbre, which also inspired Denis Rouger to his choral arrangement, create a seething motion under the surface of the sea. This art song was originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted it to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process, the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression, as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist. The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD ...wo die Ztronen bluhn (Carus 83.514).

The three verses of Aimons-nous, separated by piano interludes, are cheerful and amorous, an invitation to everlasting mutual love. The text portrays this almost as a law of nature: rivers and streams combine, the sun embraces the earth, and the birds snuggle close to each other in their nest. Light, rippling syncopations in the piano accompany Gounod's typical catchy melodic writing in the vocal parts. The writer Jules Barbier was Gounod's favored opera librettist (Faust, Romeo et Juliette), but many other 19th century opera composers also set his texts, including Camille Saint-Saens, Giacomo Meyerbeer, and Jacques Offenbach. This art song was originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. During his most productive period as an opera composer, Camille Saint-Saens also wrote sacred works, among which his Oratorio de Noel has enjoyed great worldwide popularity. The colorful and opulently orchestrated Messe de Requiem was composed in 1878 in Bern. The composer dedicated it to his patron, Albert Libon. We have published this edition both with its larger orchestral forces and to enable perfomances of the Requiem in slightly reduced scoring (without losing the special characteristics of the work), in a version with a smaller orchestra consisting of 11 winds, two harps, organ and string instruments. The full score reproduces the Urtext of the Requiem with its original scoring, whereas the performance material is presented and conceived so to enable it to be performed either in the original orchestration or the version with reduced forces. Score available separately - see item CA.2731700.
