The recital was performed by the three piccoloists from the Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras: Rosamund Plummer (SSO), Andrew Macleod (MSO), and me (ASO).When searching for a final piece that we could all play together as a trio, I came up a little short. Who would have guessed there would be so little repertoire for three piccolos? Thus the idea for Piccolo Ridicolo was born – a celebratory and humorous collaboration for three piccolos, with much debt and apologies owed to Rossini, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and more.Thank you Andrew and Rose for being my first guinea pigs, my ASO flute colleagues for various road tests, my sister Maria Grenfell for her initial typesetting, and my mentor Leone Buyse for encouraging me to seek publication of the piece.

Die Annen-Polka schrieb Johann Strauss (Sohn) zu Ehren der Kaiserin Anna Maria von Österreich. Uraufgeführt wurde das heute noch beliebte Stück im Juli 1852 im Wiener Vergnügungspark Prater. Die Annen-Polka ist eines der frühesten Werke von Johann Strauss (Sohn) und das Manuskript soll gar das älteste überlieferte des Komponisten sein. L’Annen-Polka, op. 117, de Johann Strauss fils, fut présentée, en 1852, soit dix ans après la première publique de la Beliebte Annen-Polka, op. 137, composée par son père. Le fait que tous deux aient écrit une polka portant le même nom n’est pas un hasard. En effet, l’Annenfest (la fête de sainte Anne) était alors la fête d’été la plus populaire de Vienne. Chaque compositeur viennois, célèbre ou inconnu, a composé une œuvre pour cette occasion. Johann Strauss fils avait 26 ans quand il écrivit cette polka. Il n’était pas en très bons termes avec son père ; une rivalité notoire bouillonnait entre eux. Cependant, la création de sa nouvelle œuvre connutun vif succès. Elle fut bissée plusieurs reprises et louée pour ses motifs très dansants. Dès lors, elle triompha sur les scènes du monde entier.

This present edition follows a double aim: to assist music students in getting acquainted with and growing fond of the music in Bach's time on the one hand and to prepare and facilitate teaching and studying Bach's small preludes, on the other. To meet the latter objective the more difficult dances and suite movements prove to be the most suitable. It is primarily a practical edition that follows closely the original music material. The original slurring has, however, been changed due to teaching purposes and in the interests of easier study (in several cases by omitting the original or by adding the most essential phrasing and articulation slurs). Suggestions for tempo,performance, dynamics and fingering have also been given. The eventually unusual fingering in some places promotes correct phrasing, articulation. Original ornaments that would pose considerable difficulties for the students have been omitted while the ones that can eventually be omitted depending on the rechnical skill of the students have benn put in brackets. In such cases an easier solution is, however, always indicated above the original in brackets. This does not exclude naturally that students capable of properly executing the original ornaments of these works without the distortrion of the melkody arches and rhythm should not play them in their full, not simplified form. Piano students on advanced level are recommended to compare the present edition with other, original text editions which disclose ornaments in their original form. As an example two pieces of this collection have been included in the appendix in the form they appear in the original text edition. This attempt provides possibilities both for the teachers and students to assess the nature and extent of editorial alterations. The name of the composer has only been indicated in case where it could be unambiguously identified. Unsere Ausgabe hat ein doppeltes Anliegen.
