As recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra, 'Berlin Bei Nacht' is the 4th movement of the Impressions of Berlin suite. Set in an up-tempo fashion, this Oliver Nelson's 1971 forward-thinking original starts out with an in-your-face swing unison line played by the saxophones and the trumpets, with the trombones and rhythm section providing the undercurrent. It then moves into a half-time Latin feel before settling into a funk/rock blues solo section (trumpet, or as you choose). This exciting and unique arrangement will be a favorite for your band and audiences alike! 5-4-4-3 (opt. 5th trombone).

As recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra on their album Berlin Dialogue for Orchestra, Checkpoint Charlie is some of Nelson's most creative writing. Full of up-tempo energy, Oliver masterfully intertwines the melody in the saxophones with counter-lines from the brass to create an incredible tapestry of sound. There is plenty of solo space for trombone to stretch out, giving a great contrast from the full ensemble sections to the lone soloist with rhythm section. This edited version maintains the integrity of Oliver's original recording while simplifying some of the rhythms, making brass ranges more accessible, and providing solo space for tenor, trumpet, or trombone. 5-4-4-3.

This playful medium-tempo swinger features a smooth, self-assured melody that glides along a cool, slightly altered blues progression. Trumpet and alto sax carry the melody at first before passing it off to the brass section; saxophones cleverly punctuate the brass section with heavily accented chords. The saxophones take the melody the third time around, while the brass offers incisive interjections here and there. A solo section follows that features just the right amount of background writing that enhances the proceedings without ever getting in the way; the solo section may be repeated as desired to feature additional soloists. A swinging ensemble follows the solos, starting off at a simmer and gradually heating up to the exciting full-ensemble shout chorus. Don’t Let These Blues Fool You is sure to be a favorite for concert and contest!

This standard has been arranged in a contemporary, funky groove played around 136 BPM going into a boogaloo occasionally. Lead trumpet range it to written A above the staff, and sample solos are provided for alto and tenor saxophones. The bass part is pretty funky and don't forget to check out the mellow interlude that builds into the shout chorus. Hip chart! (4:10).

Recorded on the SWR Big Band CD Fun Time and adapted from the tune Blue Daniel, this chart romps along in four instead of three and sounds harder than it is. It features a sax chorus and solos by alto sax, tenor sax and trombone, along with some powerful ensemble choruses between optional solos. The tempo is a very comfortable 116 beats per minute. Saxophones and trombone play the melody on the first two choruses and a reprise at the end. Rhythm section parts are partially notated with chords cued.
