This Prelude No. 7 is an early work and one of Bach's best known of what is now known as Book 1 of the Well-Tempered Clavier. There is much in this little work actually, the most extended in Book 1. Mr. Denroche's arrangement works perfectly for Brass Quintet and is transposed down to the key of C from the original e-flat. The range is modest and most moderately advanced groups can perform it. C & B-flat parts are supplied for the Trumpets.

Bach chose an unconventional beginning for his nine-movement cantata Schau, lieber Gott, wie meine Feind BWV 153, which he composed in his first year as Kantor of St. Thomas's for the Sunday after New Year 1724. Instead of the usual opening chorus, the cantata opens with a simple four-part chorale movement. There are also chorales in the middle of the work (movement 5) and at the end. By avoiding extended or demanding choral movements, Bach probably wanted to save the voices of his choir members at St Thomas's, who had just been involved in a demanding week of almost constant singing. This may also be why the cantata uses just three soloists (alto, tenor, bass). In the arias, each preceded by a secco recitative, the accompaniment is provided by 2 violins and viola. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3115300.

In 1735 Bach published the Italian Concerto, presented here in a revised separate edition, together with the French Overture in the second part of his âClavier Ãbungâ. The two works were intended to respectively exemplify the Italian and French styles. Thus, the âConcertoâ unmistakably imitates an Italian solo concerto, using only the means of the harpsichord. Tutti and solo passages can be heard as well as the dynamic gradations of the sound layers, which Bach explicitly marked with piano and forte. Energetic outer movements frame an Andante, in which a melancholy cantilena unfolds over unadorned chords. For the revision of this Bach classic, editor Ullrich Scheideler also evaluated, in addition to the prints, early manuscript copies which allowed interesting conclusions about the lost autograph.

In 1729 Bach took over the running of the Collegium musicum in Leipzig, founded by Telemann, and continued the tradition of giving concerts at least once a week with this ensemble in Zimmermann's coffee house or, in the summer, in the coffee garden there. The compositions which were probably composed for performance there include Bach's famous Coffee Cantata. The cantata is only superficially about daughter Liesgen's addiction to coffee, in fact it is really about her strict father Schlend rian's educational efforts, which ultimately remain ineffective - but only in Bach's cantata. In Picander's printed libretto it seems as if Schlendrian might prevail, and only in Bach's cantata, which includes two movements setting additional text, is there a twist to the contrary. Might Bach's experiences as a father have come into play here?

The opening chorus of the cantata Schauet doch und sehet (Look ye then and see now) is one of those movements by Bach which are much better known in their later guise: the first part of it became the Qui tollis of the Mass in B minor. But this movement is not the only high point of the cantata from Bach's earliest Leipzig period. Both the arias are also unusual: a bass aria depicting God's anger dramatically as a thundering storm, with strings and slide trumpet, which gives the movement a very special colour through its unexpected notes beyond the instrument's natural series, and an alto aria with two recorders, accompanied by just two oboi da caccia in unison, which take the role of the continuo as little basset instruments. Music almost not of this world! New revised edition. Score available separately - see item CA.3104600.

More than usual, in this chorale cantata the hymn is continuously present; it appears as the cantus firmus in four of the six movements and gives the work an overall unity. In addition to the opening chorus and in the closing chorale, it appears in a trio, a rare occurrence in Bach's vocal works, and even in a recitative. The latter is performed by recorders. The rich scoring for winds - besides the recorders it also includes three oboes - characterizes this cantata, which is performed after Christmas and whose text refers back to Christmas and also points to the new year. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3112200.
