The cantata Schmucket das Fest mit Maien has survived without any information about the time of its composition, its purpose, or its scoring. The librettist is also unknown, although there is a comparatively similar text in the work of the Silesian poet Hans Assmann Freiherr von Abschatz (1646-1699), printed in Leipzig in 1704. Since the copy of the score that serves as the source for this edition was probably written after 1708, and the work is closely related to the cantata Daran erkennen wir (PB 32090), it could have been written during Kuhnau's first years as Thomaskantor from 1701 on.The text set to music provides information about the purpose of the cantata. In the course of the work, the image of the bridegroom and his bride from the Song of Songs is reinterpreted as the sending of the Holy Spirit upon the congregation of Christians. In the first part, passages from the Song of Songs predominate while the second part quotes their symbolic interpretations or treats them in free poetry. In the concluding chorale, a stanza from Philipp Nicolai's Wie schon leuchtet der Morgenstern (How beautifully the morning star shines), the outpouring and the flames are also mentioned, so the purpose to the feast of Pentecost is clear.Another special feature of the cantata is the varied and colorful instrumentation with the scoring of two flutes, two oboes and bassoon in individual movements, in addition to the usual, sometimes divided strings.

One of Scriabin's best-known piano pieces is also one of his very first compositions. He wrote it when he was only fifteen years old; when it appeared in print in 1893, the twenty-one-year-old was still so unknown that he did not receive any remuneration from the publisher. The rapturous etude was soon to enjoy unprecedented success. Marked “Andante”, it is not a virtuoso piece – but nevertheless it is a challenge to master the full-handed chords in legato and to clearly work out the upper and middle parts at the same time. In the Henle Urtext edition, Boris Giltburg's fingerings support this task in an exemplary manner. As an etude of medium difficulty, this earworm offers a wonderful introduction to the piano world of Scriabin!

This frequently set text by Mary Elizabeth Frye is full of hope and life. In this new setting, the violin soars as if to represent the spirit that has left the grave. The repeating text “I'm not there, I'm not gone” over an ascending 1/16th note pattern gives your singers the sense of traveling to places yet unknown.

This motet, no matter how popular it is, presents Bach scholars with a few puzzles: is it really by Bach? Somehow the text doesn't fit with the notes, at least not so that it's comfortable to sing. And is the musicologists' problem the same for the choral singers? Not, of course not in the Alleluia fugue: in that, there really is something to worry about ... year of composition unknown. Year of composition unknown, presumably in the period 1723-1732 Der saure Weg - the bitter path - is how this motet is popularly known, taking its nickname from the fugue theme, with its awkward intervals which are a challenge to sing cleanly. But Bach's choral music contains a whole range of other challenges, too. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3122900.

Bach's Cantata BWV 69a of 1723, which has remained largely unknown to the present day, is now available for the first time in a practical edition with this Carus publication. It has been unjustly neglected as it was overshadowed by the Cantata BWV 69 of the same name, a piece which Bach reworked to celebrate the inauguration of Leipzig Town Council in 1748. On that occasion Bach re-used the parts from 1723 for simplicity, and adapted them for the new use by means of cuts, alterations, and additions - something which certainly did not mean that he rejected the 1723 version. This version can readily be recovered from the parts of 1723, if we explore beyond the alterations of 1748. With its rich wind instruments and great opening chorus, the 1723 cantata is in no way inferior to the later festive music in terms of musical splendor. The text takes the Gospel reading about the healing of the deaf and dumb man as a reason for praise and thanks for God's good deeds. In contrast to the later version, in which God is thanked for the wisdom of the Leipzig authorities, the original version of 1723 is free of such contemporary references, and is suitable for use in worship and concerts in many different ways. Score available separately - see item CA.3106900.

With the final verse of the Book of Daniel from the Old Testament and a related cantata text, Telemann mourns the death of a prominent, but until now unknown dignitary in a cantata marked by great intimacy and with exquisite instrumentation. Jakob Ditmar, the Kantor of the Nikolaikirche in Berlin, to whom we owe the survival of this work, contributed two beautiful chorale settings for a performance in 1757. First critical edition of this cantata. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3913900.

Large work, published here in Piano/Vocal version only. This oratorio deals with the conversion to Christianity of the 9th-century Bohemian pricess Ludmila, grandmother of the first great Czech hero, St. Wenceslas. Although Ludmila was virtually unknown outside the Czech lands, the original British audience easily identified with the libretto's universal themes of faith, love and patriotism. This edition is a reissue of the original Novello P/V score, with some note corrections, addition of measure #s (to correspond to the orch score) and permormance notes. Full score and parts available from Supraphon (distributed by Baerenreiter).

Thanks to Stefano Grondona, this unknown and unedited transcription by Tárrega in G major of Albéniz' Cádiz, known widely as the Célebre Serenata Española has just been identified in a manuscript copied by Miguel Llobet, probably while he was still Tárrega's pupil. This beautiful and subtle transcription is not overcomplicated to play, Tárrega did not try to do everything, as some later transcribers have attempted to do. The melody sings and the accompaniment is subtly always there. The tuning with 5th string to G, and 6th to D, is no hindrance - on the contrary it is a boon. We are not aware of any published version of this work in G major, and this particular version has never been published until now. We are delighted to make it available for the first time in a new scholarly edition prepared from Llobet's meticulously accurate manuscript, a copy of which is reproduced in the edition.

The Lost Temple captures the intrigue of ancient legends, lost treasures, and adventures into the unknown. A quiet, mysterious theme opens the piece, eventually giving way to a driving adventure theme. A sense of calm and wonder emerges as dangers reveal themselves. A triumphant flourish ends the musical journey. (4:15).

In English-speaking countries ‘Away in a Manger’ is one of the first Christmas songs to be taught to little children. It is a moving song with simple words, which makes it easy to understand. The song is also known as ‘Luther’s Cradle Hymn’. This suggests that Martin Luther was the author of the lyrics. According to researchers, however, this is a misconception the author is unknown. In England ‘Away in a Manger’ is sung to a different melody than in the USA, for example. The ‘English’ melody was composed by W.J. Kirkpatrick. Andrew Mackereth made a touching arrangement of the ‘English’ melody, which suits the tender lyrics perfectly.

This new, completely revised and reset centenary edition of Satie’s complete piano music in three volumes has returned to Satie’s manuscripts and first editions to give pianists completely accurate and reliable texts to play from.As well aspresenting every piece for piano solo or piano reduction that Satie published, this edition also includes some previously unknown pieces, like the Petite Sonate that he wrote for Vincent d’Indy at the Schola Cantorum, as well as some interestingfirst versions of well-known pieces, like San Bernardo, a trial version of Españaña (1913) and the markedly different first version of Les Pantins dansent (1914). In addition, there areexamples of the different types of exercises that Satie completedat the Schola between 1905 and 1912, some extra trial Enfantines, and some earlier drafts of his famous Sports et divertissements. To help pianists, suggested metronome marks have been added throughout, and there are also some performance suggestionsfor the Rose Croix pieces of the 1890s, which otherwise appear to be all quiet and slow. The notation has been made as user-friendly as possible, without detracting from Satie’s concerns about the “extériorisation†of his musical thought in print.

An unknown work from the so-called Buckeburger Bach, which at first was ascribed unjustly to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The story of the Suffering of the Lord is examined from a different perspective. Pilgrims have undertaken a journey to the Holy Land and when they arrive they are informed by a hermit of the suffering and death of Christ. An additional figure, an angel, lends this representation of the Passion a heightened form for communicating the importance of the suffering of Christ.

The musicologist Helmut Lauterwasser, staff member of the Repertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM) in the work group located at the Bavarian State Library in Munich, recently discovered two choral pieces for men's voices by the young Johannes Brahms: Des Postillons Morgenlied (text by Wilhelm Muller) and Goldne Bruecken (text by Emanuel Geibel).Brahms presumably wrote Des Postillons Morgenlied as early as 1847 at the age of 14. The piece is thus the earliest of all of Brahms' transmitted works. Goldne Bruecken was perhaps written for a concert given in Celle in early May 1853. Brahms dedicated the two works to the men's choral society of that town. When he later tried to collect the non-published early works in order to destroy them, he apparently forgot the Celle pieces. The previously unknown copies had been preserved in the estate of the Alte Celler Liedertafel. Their authenticity has since been confirmed by the Brahms Complete Edition in Kiel. The Chorus of the Bayerischer Rundfunk gave the first performance and the world- premiere broadcast of the pieces in its BR-KLASSIK program on 5 March 2010.

Sibelius orchestral works rediscovered It was a minor sensation when in 1996 the conductor Osmo Vanska recorded a completely unknown, more than 20-minute-long orchestral work by the young Jean Sibelius in Lahti: Skogsraet (The Forest Nymph) had suddenly re-emerged. But this was no mere rediscovery, since in his later years, Sibelius had graciously agreed that his early work could be performed in a radically abridged form. He thus left his score in a rather confusing condition. Varsang (Spring Song), the second work in this volume of the Complete Edition, has two (or even three?) early versions, which makes for a most complicated source examination. Tuija Wicklund thus faced a mountain of problems in preparing the edition. The editor's meticulous work ultimately yielded three complete orchestral scores from the years 1894/95, thus from a period in which no one can claim that such pieces are early works. By this time, Sibelius had already made a name for himself in Finland with his first masterpieces Kullervo (1892), En saga (first version, 1892), the Karelia Suite (1893) and Rakastava (1894).
