This traditional African-American spiritual speaks of hope and trust in its biblical references to feasting with all believers at a common table. Steve has shaped his arrangement to be expressive and spirited, with interplay among the four-part voices, developing differently in each verse. The fourth verse mimcs the text of flying with the upper voices while the basses hold the melody. Your choir will sound impeccably polished with this fine a cappella writing.

I rise on, upward forever, gathering strength, gaining breath, from the spirit of life. Written with emerging ensembles in mind, the vocal ranges are conservative and the melodies are singable. The piece reflects the composer's fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space in general. The title comes from a theory, formulated by Pythagoras, that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws he had discovered that govern the ratios of note frequencies of the musical scale. (‘Harmonia’ in Ancient Greek, which means scale or tuning rather than harmony - Greek music was monophonic). He also believed that these ratios corresponded to the distances of the six known planets from the sun and that the planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody (which, unfortunately, we humans cannot hear). In this work, these six notesform the basis of the sections MUSIC OF THE SPHERES and HARMONIA. The pieces opens with a horn solo called t = 0, a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bang when time and space were created, and this is followed by a depiction of the BIG BANG itself, as the entire universe bursts out from a single point. A slower section follows called THE LONELY PLANET which is a meditation on the incredible and unlikely set of circumstances which led to the creation of the Earth as a planet that can support life, and the constant search for other civilisations elsewhere in the universe. ASTEROIDS AND SHOOTING STARS depicts both the benign and dangerous objects that are flying through space and which constantly threaten our planet, and the piece ends with THE UNKNOWN, leaving in question whether our continually expanding exploration of the universe will eventually lead to enlightenment or destruction. Asteroids and Shooting Stars beschrijft objecten in de ruimte.

Drunken Sailor — the sequelThis needs a plaintive tone especially in the upper register where the dynamics are particularly important. To capture the mood of the piece those slurs in bars 35 and 36, for example, might even be close to a glissando. Use your imagination to recreate the sailor’s state of health! The Vulgar BoatmanNot only more hidden melodies but more appalling puns! (Volga Boatman for those not versed in Russian folksongs). This is like a waltz: it is written in 3/4 time but played so as to give the impression of one beat in bar. The melodies need to be well sustained so that we hear four, eight or even more bars as a single phrase. Clues for the musical detective:- in addition to the Volga Boatman, you might spot just a hint of Sailing down the River on a Sunday Afternoon, We Sail the Ocean Blue (H.M.S. Pinafore), The Eton Boating Song and even Wagner’s Flying Dutchman.Last Tango in HarrisEveryone must surely know these thinly disguised Scottish tunes, but can you make them sound like a tango? Bear in mind that tangos are not jazz: the rhythm is quite strict, but the tango character is in the tone and the phrasing. Notice how expressive the occasional shorter note value can be, as in bars 4 and 5 in the bassoon part.Rheumanian StretchesOr was that Rumanian Sketches? This is a chance to play the main melody in two registers of the bassoon. Try to make a good even sound in both octaves. This piece requires careful counting since the phrases in the bassoon part don’t always begin where you might expect. Think of this piece as a song.Four Pieces for Bassoon and PianoGrade 3Former Spartan Press Cat. No.: SP1163.

Composed by Claude Barthelemy, Okawati's is the first piece from the series Irrawady (also named Asia is running through my ears) for Alto or Soprano Saxophone and electro-acoustic system. Commissioned by a Cultural Centre, this series is made of four parts and two interludes (without Saxophone) and was used as a piece of contest. This particular piece, Okawati's is representing a hotel located in between rice fields in Bali. At night, there is no silence but the noise of frogs and birds flying around. The player is supposed to impersonate one of the birds. Lasting 5'34 minutes, the score of this piece is written in modern writing and requires some good knowledge of modern and contemporary pieces and some very good technical knowledge. Quite unusual and fun to play, it also includes a CD which features the part of the electro-acoustic system. It is followed by: - Interlude I - Ubud - Le dos des caimans - Interlude II - Gazebo.

Icarus works with his father to make wings to escape Crete. The wings are made of wax andfeathers. Icarus flies too close to the sun, the wings melt, and he falls. Although the storyhas a dark ending, the music centers on the excitement of building the wings and the dangerof flying. -Elena Ruehr.
