Welcome to the Cirque de L’étrange, known in English as the “Circus of the Strange.” This piece evokes a time of a bygone era, a time when circuses and carnivals provided people from all walks of life a chance to see human and animal oddities that were sources of both delight and horror. While many of these sideshow attractions were deemed fraudulent, it did not deter the crowds from flocking to be shocked and awed. I have always held a special place in my heart for the showmanship of carnivals, because my grandfather dearly loved them. For much of his life, he worked at fairs and carnivals selling cotton candy and candy apples. A large portion of my days when growing up were spent running around fairgrounds and helping my grandfather with his stand. He imparted in me a love for the cunning, magic, and sheer joy that only carnivals and circuses can bring. In Cirque de L’étrange, I sought to capture the the mirthful, yet uncanny mood of the carnivals that I grew up exploring, thus transporting you to a different time.Cirque de L'étrange is an original concert march written in standard march form, but its sound is anything but standard. This piece is playable by younger groups, as it is a great way to expose students to the march form and style while not sounding like your typical march.Opening in D minor, the piece combines the playful feel of a march and a macabre tango. The second time through the First Strain (mm. 5-23), the upper woodwinds and bells add a second counter melody based in D harmonic minor, which heightens the peculiar nature of the piece. The Second Strain (mm. 24-43) by contrast, is a little more upbeat, thus evoking the magical ebullience of a circus, which is further highlighted by the xylophone part. The Second Strain ends in the key of F major and sets up the transition to the Trio in the key of G minor. The Trio (m. 44) begins with the G harmonic minor melody in the clarinets and a counter melody in the bassoon and tenor saxophone. The rest of the woodwinds and bells join in at m. 60 while the percussion adds a Gypsy-like feel with tambourine and triangle. At m. 76 the full band joins in the macabre parade with the trombones and baritones harmonizing the counter melody. The conclusion of the march has the upper woodwinds, adding a second counter melody complete with trills to bring the march to an exciting and dramatic finish.As the World’s Greatest Showman, P.T. Barnum, a man my grandfather greatly admired, once said “The noblest art is that of making others happy.” It is my hope that through this piece you will experience the thrill, delight, and fright that only carnivals can bring as you visit the Circus of the Strange!

A Midwest Fanfare was commissioned by the Brass Band of Battle Creek and premiered by them during their appearance at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago on 20th December 2017 where this fanfare was the opening piece of the entire event. This piece is designed to be played with the cornets split into two teams either side of the band. It opens with the two groups answering each other antiphonally over a repeated figure in the lower band. A calmer central section introduces a euphonium solo which is then taken up by the whole ensemble. This leads back to a repeat of the opening fanfares over a rhythmic accompaniment and a short coda which brings the work to a close.

A Midwest Fanfare werd geschreven in opdracht van de Brass Band of Battle Creek en op 20 december 2017 door dit ensemble in première gebracht als openingswerk op de Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Het werk is zo gecomponeerd dat de kornetten in twee teams worden verdeeld, die aan weerszijden van de band komen te staan. Deze twee groepen antwoorden elkaar op antifonale wijze boven een herhaald motief in de lagere registers. Een rustiger centraal gedeelte introduceert een eufoniumsolo, die aansluitend wordt overgenomen door de complete band. Deze passage mondt uit in een herhaling van de openingsfanfares boven een ritmische begeleiding, waarna het werk met een korte coda fraaiwordt afgesloten.

A Midwest Fanfare wurde von der Brass Band of Battle Creek in Auftrag gegeben und bei ihrem Auftritt anlässlich der Midwest Clinic in Chicago am 20. Dezember 2017 uraufgeführt, wo diese Fanfare den Auftakt für die gesamte Veranstaltung bildete. Das Stück ist so konzipiert, dass die Kornette in zwei Gruppen aufgeteilt sind und auf beiden Seiten der Brass Band platziert werden. Es beginnt mit einem Wechselgesang der beiden Gruppen, der über einer sich wiederholenden Melodie in den tieferen Stimmen der Brass Band erklingt. Im ruhigeren Mittelteil wird ein Euphonium-Solo vorgestellt, das dann vom gesamten Ensemble aufgenommen wird. Schließlich kehren die Eröffnungsfanfarenüber einer rhythmischen Begleitung zurück und eine kurze Coda bringt das Werk zum Abschluss.

L’instrumentation divise les cornets en deux groupes de part et d’autre de l’orchestre. La pièce s’ouvre avec les deux groupes qui se répondent antiphonalement sur un motif répété par les basses. Un passage central plus calme introduit un solo d’euphonium qui est ensuite repris par l’orchestre entier. Given that hardly any printed collections of new keyboard music were offered in Germany in the first decades of the 18th century, Christoph Graupner's eight Partien auf das Clavier , published in 1718, marked a new beginning. The suites are arranged according to an ascending sequence of notes and generally follow the scheme Allemande - Courante - Sarabande - Gigue, but this order is repeatedly broken, also by movements that are rather unusual for a suite. The focus is on the characteristics of the individual movements and the joy of playing with figures typical for the movement or instrument, as well as on challenging playing techniques, such as hand changes in runs (passaggi), wide-ranging chord breaks and the use of the thumb, which was not very common at the time. In this respect, Graupner's suites offer not so much a formal advancement, but rather an expansion of the demands of playing technique. Although several CD recordings of these suites already exist, this volume constitutes the first modern Urtext edition. Complementing her scholarly activities, the editor Genevieve Soly provides important impulses on performance practice in the preface, especially on the execution of the passaggi and the ornamentation, thus opening up the view on her activity as a harpsichordist.

Sparkling Brass was commissioned by Osaka Concert Brass, one of Japan’s top brass bands, and premiered by them on 27th December 2018 during a concert which celebrated their 10th Anniversary. The work opens in lively mood with fanfare-style figures from the lower band which are answered by the cornets. This interplay intensifies until the mood calms suddenly to introduce a chorale which leads to a duet-cadenza for cornet and euphonium. The rhythmic mood of the opening soon returns and leads to the main theme of the work, a modal caccia which features various section of the band. A short bridge passage leads to a change of key and a new cantabile theme which isintroduced by euphoniums and baritone. This is taken up by the full band after another change of key and leads back to the caccia theme. A transformed version of the opening fanfare returns to close the work.

Het werk opent in een levendige sfeer, met fanfareachtige motieven in het lage koper, beantwoord door de kornetten. Dit samenspel wordt intenser tot de sfeer plotseling rustiger wordt en er een koraal naar voren komt dat leidt naar een duet-cadens voor kornet en eufonium. De ritmische sfeer van het begin keert snel terug en mondt uit in het hoofdthema, een modale caccia met diverse secties uit de band. Een korte bridgepassage brengt een verandering in toonsoort en een nieuw cantabile thema, ge ntroduceerd door de eufoniumsen bariton. Dit wordt overgenomen door de hele band na nog een toonsoortverandering, waarna het caccia-thema terugkeert. Het werk besluit met een getransformeerde versie van de openingsfanfare.
