The motivation for composing this test piece for the Concert Division Brassband of the 2001 WMC was Rob Goorhuis's deep respect for one of the greatest Dutch composers of the 20-th century who also enlarged the wind band repertoire in a most valuable way. Goorhuis wanted to light up the soft and kind side of the brassband and wrote about this composition : The basis is a theme of twelve tones wich Badings once played at an International Organ Improvisation Contest in Haarlem.My organ teacher participated in that contest and so the theme remained somehow in the back of my mind. The composer worked out a series of variations and clustered them into bundles ofthree and so the melody kept its diversity while remaining easy to recognise. Aan de basis van dit verplichte werk voor de concertafdeling Brassband WMC 2001 lag de eerbied van Rob Goorhuis voor één van de grootste Nederlandse componisten uit de 20e eeuw die trouwens ook veel voor de blaasmuziekwereld heeftbetekend. Goorhuis wilde de zachtaardige kant van de brassband belichten en zegt hierover:De basis is een thema van 12 tonen dat Badings ooit heeft bedacht voor het Internationale Orgelimprovisatie Concours in Haarlem. Mijnorgeldocent nam destijds ook aan dat concours deel en dat thema is op één of andere manier in mijn achterhoofd blijven hangen.De componist bedacht een reeks variaties en clusterde ze in bundels van drie, zo bleef de melodiedivers, maar toch herkenbaar. The Geuzen Medal is an annual award given to people or organizations who have found unique ways to further democracy in the world and help eliminate dictatorships, racism, and discrimination. The original Geuzen fought against Spanish imperialism in Holland during the16th century. During the Second World War a group resisting the Nazis also named themselves De Geuzen. Jan de Haan incorporates Psalm 43, sung by a group of condemned prisoners shortly before their execution in 1943, into Geuzen Medal Fanfare, composed for the 25th bestowal of this special award.Ieder jaar weer wordt ze weer uitgereikt: de Geuzenpenning. Dit is aan een persoon of organisatie die zich op bijzondere wijze inzet voor de democratie en tegen dictatuur, racisme en discriminatie. In de zestiende eeuw streden deGeuzen tegen de Spaanse bezetting. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog was er eveneens een verzetsgroep die zich zo noemde. Een deel van hen werd in 1943 veroordeeld tot de doodstraf. Vlak voor de voltrekking van het vonnis zetten zij psalm43 in. Precies deze psalm verwerkte Jan de Haan in zijn openingswerk Geuzen Medal Fanfare. Hij schreef het ter gelegenheid van de vijfentwintigste uitreiking.Der Geuzenpenning (Geuzen Medal) wird jährlich an Menschen oder Organisataionen verliehen, die sich auf besondere Weise für die Demokratie und gegen Diktatur, Rassismus und Diskriminierung eingesetzt haben. Die ursprünglichen Geuzen kämpften gegen spanische Besatzung in Holland im 16. Jahrhundert; im Zweiten Weltkrieg nannte sich eine Widerstandsgruppe gegen die Deutschen ebenfalls De Geuzen. Den Psalm 43, den eine Gruppe von Verurteilten 1943 kurz vor ihrer Hinrichtung anstimmte, verarbeitete Jan de Haan in seinem Eröffnungswerk De Geuzen Medal Fanfare, das er zur 25. Verleihung dieses besonderen Ordens schrieb.La Médaille des Gueux décernée par la Geuzen Resistance Foundation 1940-1945, met l’honneur une personne ou une organisation méritante, s’étant engagée dans la lutte pour la démocratie. Le nom de la fondation tire son origine de la révolte des Gueux, mouvement patriotique néerlandais. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, des résistants reprirent le nom des Gueux. Lorsque quinze d’entre eux tombèrent aux mains des occupants allemands, ils entamèrent le Psaume 43. The Hymn of Cittaslow, which was commissioned by the organisation itself, is entirely inspired by their commitment to the preservation of the member towns. The tempo is naturally ‘slow', and the themes somehow soundfamiliar. On the one hand, the music emanates peace and quiet, but it also sounds grand in its lyricism, thereby reflecting the beauty of the Cittaslow towns. Cittaslow is een internationaal netwerk van meer dan 220 gemeenten verspreid over 30 landen. De aangesloten plaatsen zijn gemeenten waar mensen nieuwsgierig zijn naar vroeger, waar een rijke schakering aan theaters, pleinen, cafés, restaurants en spirituele plekken te vinden is, met een ongerept landschap en innemende ambachtslieden, waar mensen de langzame tred van de seizoenen nog herkennen en hun authentieke producten, ware smaak en gezondheid eerbiedigen. Trias Politica is de aanduiding voor de driemachtenleer, oftewel de leer der machtenscheiding geformuleerd door de Franse wijsgeer Charles Montesquieu (1689-1755). Ter bescherming van de rechten en de vrijheid van burgers moeten deze drie machten (wetgevende-, rechterlijke- en de uitvoerende macht) in een staat streng gescheiden blijven. Deel 1 - de wetgevende macht - is gegoten in de klassieke sonatevorm. In de grondwet van de muziek is dit één van de belangrijkste muzikale vormen. Net zoals in een wet is de sonatevorm strikt omschreven. Deel 2 - de rechterlijke macht - geeft de sfeer weer van het werk van de rechters. Na het dossier van een afstandin alle rust te hebben bekeken en alle partijen ter zitting te hebben gehoord komen zij tot een weloverwogen oordeel. The hymn Nun ruhen alle Wälder (Now All Forests Rest), arranged by J.S. Bach (No. 6, So sei nun, Seele, deine, from Cantata BWV 13), is a guiding light throughout this four-movement composition. Pütz wrote this work as a musical outcry against the wilful, profit-driven destruction of our environment. When Bach used the word “ruhen†(to rest) over 350 years ago, it probably had a different nuance from the meaning it has today. At the beginning of the 21st century - the so-called age of progress - “nun ruhen alle Wälder†should mean “now all forests die†. Massive industrialization and globalization, coupled with pure greed, corruption, political scandals, an ever-wideninggap between the rich and poor, and other such senseless human actions, are pushing our blue planet closer and closer to the point of no return. This work is not intended to be a ranting accusation. It should remind us of the beauty and harmony that can exist all around us in nature, if we take care of it. Pütz hopes that this will, one day, help put a greater emphasis on humanity’s survival, and coexistence with nature rather than the exploitation described earlier. All four texts were created by Australian poet Graeme King, whose works were discovered by Pütz, by chance on the internet. Pütz was especially captivated by King’s clarity, and intrigued by the possibilities of adapting and melding the strong rhythmical structure of King’s writing with his own musical language. The four movements are as follows: 1. Tears of Nature 2. Grrrevolution 3. Stand up! 4. Tomorrow The world première of Four Earth Songs took place on 7 July 2009 at the 14th WASBE-Conference in Cincinnati (USA). This work is dedicated in friendship to Jouke Hoekstra, conductor, and the Frysk Fanfare Orkest (the Frisian Fanfare-Orchestra). De hymne Nun ruhen alle Wälder, gearrangeerd door J.S. Bach (nr. 6, So sei nun, Seele, deine, uit cantate BWV 13), is de leidraad in deze vierdelige compositie. Pütz schreef het werk als een muzikaal protest tegen de moedwillige,op winstbejag gebaseerde vernietiging van ons milieu. Toen Bach het woord ‘ruhen’ (rusten) meer dan 350 jaar geleden gebruikte, lag er waarschijnlijk een andere nuance in dan tegenwoordig. Aan het begin van de 21e eeuw - dezogenaamde eeuw van de vooruitgang - zou ‘nun ruhen alle Wälder’ zelfs kunnen betekenen: ‘nu sterven alle bossen’. De grootschalige industrialisatie en globalisering, in combinatie met pure hebzucht, corruptie, politieke schandalen,een groeiende kloof tussen arm en rijk, en andere dwaze menselijke verrichtingen, brengen onze blauwe planeet steeds verder in de problemen, tot er misschien geen weg terug meer is. Dit werk is niet bedoeld als een beschuldigendetirade. Het moet ons wijzen op de schoonheid en harmonie die in de natuur om ons heen kan bestaan, als we er goed voor zorgen. Das Werk ist dem Dirigenten Jouke Hoekstra und dem Frysk Fanfare Orkest (Friesischen Fanfareorchester) in aller Freundschaft gewidmet. Le cantique Nun ruhen alle Wälder, dont la ligne mélodique fut reprise par Jean-Sébastien Bach pour son choral So sein nun, Seele, deine (Choral n°6 - Cantate BWV 13), est le fil conducteur de cette oeuvre en quatre mouvements conçue comme un cri contre la destruction volontaire de la nature pour le profit. Plus de trois siècles nous séparent du temps de Bach. Si les mots sont restés les mêmes, leur sens primitif connaît cependant quelques nuances. Ainsi, au XXIe siècle - considéré comme le « siècle du progrès », il conviendrait de traduire Nun ruhen alle Wälder (“les forêts se reposent “) par “Les forêts se meurentâ€. La mondialisation et l’industrialisation massiveassociées l’avidité prédatrice, la corruption politique, aux actions humaines irrationnelles et au fossé grandissant entre riches et pauvres conduisent notre planète bleue se rapprocher chaque jour un peu plus du point de non retour. Cette composition n’est pas une accusation acerbe, mais plutôt une exhortation prendre soin de cette beauté si harmonieuse que nous offre la nature. Et peut-être, prendrons-nous enfin conscience de l’importance d’une situation de coexistence avec la nature, nécessaire pour la survie de l’espèce humaine, et non d’exploitation qui conduit la destruction. Un jour, alors qu’il naviguait sur Internet, Marco Pütz découvrit l’oeuvre du poète australien Graeme King. Fasciné par la clarté de l’écriture et le rythme des vers, Marco Pütz imagina les multiples possibilités d’adaptation et de mise en musique qu’offrent les poèmes de King. Il choisit quatre poèmes sur la nature pour créer son oeuvre Four Earth Songs (Quatre chants de la terre). 1. Tears of Nature (Les larmes de la Nature) 2. Grrrevolution 3. Stand up! (Levez-vous !) 4. Tomorrow (Demain) Four Earth Songs est dédié amicalement l’Orchestre de Fanfare de Frise (Frysk Fanfare Orkest) et son chef, Jouke Hoekstra. L’oeuvre a été donnée en création mondiale par l’orchestre dédicataire l’occasion de la 14ème Convention de la WASBE Cincinnati aux.

Whereas ‘Auld Lang Syne’ may be considered the best-known Scottish song ever, yet at the same time it is an obscure one, for there are but few people who know the complete text by heart. After the familiar ‘Should auld acquaintance be forgot .....‘ many people take their refuge to lyrics like ‘rum tee dum ta dee ..... lah, lah, lah ........... for auld lang syne’. Even in Scotland only a handful of persons know the entire text and are able to give a correct rendering of it. The current lyrics have been attributed to the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Burns, however, he did not write the whole poem : after he had heard an old man sing the centuries-old Scotchballad, he wrote it down and added a number of stanzas (1788). Historical research teaches us that the ballad served many purposes, both political and religious. Nowadays, ‘Auld Lang Syne’ is sung as a Christmas Carol and it is also sung on New Year’s Eve at the turning of the year. Apart from that, though, the song is also sung on many other occasions sometimes with different lyrics, which usually have Love, Friendship and/or Parting as their themes, as these go well with the fascinating melody. In this arrangement a low-sounding solo instrument is central. The harmonization in the accompaniment fits in perfectly with the sentiments this song will evoke. Should auld acquaintance be forgot And never brought to mind? Should auld acquintance be forgot. And days of auld lang syne? For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne, We’ll take a cup of kindness yet, For auld lang syne. Misschien wel het meest bekende Schotse lied, maar tegelijkertijd ook het minst bekende, er zijn er maar weinig mensen die de tekst mee kunnen zingen. Na het bekende ‘Should auld acquaintaintance be forgot and .....‘ vervallenvelen in ‘rum tee dum ta dee ..... lah, lah, lah ........... for auld lang syne’. Zelfs in Schotland is maar een enkeling in staat de tekst correct weer te geven.De huidige versie wordt toegeschreven aan de Schotse dichterRobert Burns. Burns heeft echter niet de hele tekst gemaakt. Toen hij de eeuwen oude Schotse ballade door een oude man hoorde zingen, heeft hij enkele verzen toegevoegd (1788).Historisch onderzoek leert dat de ballade voorveel doeleinden gebruikt werd, voor politieke als ook religieuze doelen. Tegenwoordig wordt ‘Auld Lang Syne’ gebruikt als Christmas Carol en wordt het gezongen tijdens de jaarwisseling op oudejaarsavond.Het lied, soms meteen andere tekst, wordt echter op veel meer plaatsen gebruikt. This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes.The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section. The work is brought to a close with a slow but optimistic theme heralding hope for the future.De kolonisatie, de slavernij en de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog: drie periodes die een belangrijke rol spelen in de geschiedenis van de staat Virginia. De expressieve inleiding geeft de avonturen en ontberingen van de eerste kolonistenweer. Vanaf 1619 voert Virginia ten behoeve van de tabaksplantages als eerste staat zwarte slaven in. Dit wordt uitgedrukt in een langzaam gedeelte, waarin een melancholiek mineurthema en elementen van de blues het uitgangspuntvormen. Het scherp koper kondigt de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog aan. Het slotthema verklankt verlossing en hoop.Auf der Landkarte sieht der amerikanische Staat Virginia wie ein etwas schief geratenes Dreieck aus. Diese Form schlägt sich bildhaft in der vorliegenden Komposition nieder, die den Staat aus drei verschiedenen Blickwinkeln beleuchtet, drei Zeitabschnitten, die für Virginia von besonderer Bedeutung waren: Die Kolonisation, die Sklaverei und der amerikanische Bürgerkrieg. Die bewegenden Ereignisse wurden in mal lebhafte, dann wieder langsame, in mal kämpferische, mal friedvolle und mal melancholische und schließlich optimistisch stimmende Musik umgesetzt. Ein ausdrucksstarkes Werk über ein bewegendes Stück amerikanischer Geschichte!Pour composer cette oeuvre au caractère épique, Jacob de Haan s’est inspiré de trois périodes marquantes de l’histoire de l’État de Virginie : la colonisation, l’esclavage et la guerre de Sécession. L’introduction expressive dépeint les aventures et les difficultés affrontées par les premiers colons. Le second mouvement plus mélancolique développe un thème mélodique mineur aux accents de blues symbolisant le déplacement des esclaves noirs en route vers les plantations de tabac de la Virginie, l’un des premiers États esclavagistes américains. The composition ".The Fever Tree". in 2008 was commissioned by the Music Association of Central and Eastern Netherlands St.Willibrord as a gift to all its members on the occasion of the formation of a national music organization and the elimination of the music union for Central and Eastern Netherlands St.Willibrord. The fever tree is a controversial legend about St. Willibrord (658-739). The daughter of a pagan chieftain of Hoemannen that made the area around Heumen unsafe, was seriously ill. They feared for her life. The chief of the gang turned to predatory Willibrord, who same time in this region led mission. Willibrord commanded theman to repent and a headband of the girl to a certain special tree to hang. The desperate captain obeyed, and his daughter was a miraculous heal. Then came the anger of the Hoemannen against their leader, who in their eyes had committed treason by the group to convert. They abused themselves to him and killed him brutally. The daughter remained behind in great sorrow, comforted by Willibrord. The composition has the following scenes: - Andante moderato - the calling of Willibrord - Allegro moderato - Willibrord passes through the province of Brabant and try to people to repent - Vivace - Hoemannen terrorize the inhabitants of the area Heumen - Andante - the healing of the sick girl and the conversion of the centurion - Inquieto - the revenge of the Hoemannen - Adagio - elegy on the death of the chief De compositie 'The Fever Tree' (De koortsboom) werd in 2008 geschreven in opdracht van de Muziekbond Midden- en Oost Nederland St.Willibrord, als geschenk aan al haar leden bij gelegenheid van de vorming van één landelijke muziekorganisatieen de opheffing van de muziekbond voor Midden- en Oost Nederland St.Willibrord. De koortsboom is een omstreden legende rond St. Willibrord (658-739). De dochter van de heidense hoofdman van de Hoemannen, diehet gebied rond Heumen onveilig maakten, was ernstig ziek. Men vreesde voor haar leven. De hoofdman van de roofzuchtige bende wende zich tot Willibrord, die in dezelfde tijd in deze streek missioneerde. Willibrord gebood deman zich te bekeren én een hoofdband van het meisje aan een bepaalde, bijzondere boom te hangen. De radeloze hoofdman gehoorzaamde en zijn dochter werd op wonderbaarlijke wijze genezen. Toen keerde de woede van de Hoemannen zichtegen hun leider, die in hun ogen verraad had gepleegd aan de groep door zich te bekeren. Ze vergrepen zich aan hem en vermoordden hem op gruwelijke wijze. De dochter bleef in grote droefheid achter, getroost door Willibrord.De compositie kent de volgende tableaus: - Andante moderato - de roeping van Willibrord - Allegro moderato - Willibrord trekt door het Brabantse land en tracht de bevolking te bekeren - Vivace - deHoemannen terroriseren de inwoners van het gebied rond Heumen - Andante - de genezing van het zieke meisje en de bekering van de hoofdman - Inquieto - de wraak van de Hoemannen - Adagio - treurzang over de doodvan de hoofdman.

In 1918 componeerde Puccini Gianni Schicchi: de derde opera van Il trittico (een trilogie). 'O mio babbino caro' is een beroemde arietta, gezongen door Gianni Schicchi's dochter Lauretta. Het lied is melodieus en deharmonisatie is prachtig. Bij een incomplete bezetting biedt dit arrangement alternatieven voor verschillende partijen. Het werk is geschikt als oefenstuk (met het accent op de toonvorming), maar zeker ook als toegift.O Mio Babbino Caro ist eine der beruhmtesten Opernarien Puccinis uberhaupt. Sie stammt aus der Oper Gianni Schicchi, dem dritten Teil einer Opern-Trilogie. Die Harfe, die im Original eine zentrale Rolle spielt, integrierte Tohru Takahashi in seiner Bearbeitung fur Blasorchester in die Vibraphonstimme. Das ausgezeichnete Arrangement des Japaners, das viele Besetzungsmoglichkeiten bietet, ist eine ideale Zugabenummer! En 1918, Giacomo Puccini compose l'opera Gianni Schicchi. O mio babbino caro est le superbe air chante par Lauretta, fille de Gianni Schicchi, personnage central de l'opera. L'orchestration est splendide, la melodie est empreinte d'un lyrisme poignant. Ideale pour developper le sens du phrase, la justesse et l'equilibre entre les differents pupitres, O mio babbino caro devoile la richesse et la finesse de la palette sonore de l'Orchestre d'Harmonie.

Of Skies, Rivers, Lakes and Mountains was commissioned by the Northern California Band Directors' Association to honour their 50th Anniversary in 2012. The first performance was given by the Association’s 2012 Honor Band, conducted by Dr Royce Trevis, in the Harlen Adams Theater, California State University, Chico, California, on 4th February that year.The brief for the commission asked for a piece that celebrated the United States’ natural resources and composer Philip Sparke turned to Katharine Lee Bates’s lyrics for the song America the Beautiful, of which the first and last verses are:O beautiful for spacious skies,For amber waves of grain,For purplemountain majestiesAbove the fruited plain!America! America!God shed His grace on thee,And crown thy good with brotherhoodFrom sea to shining seaThe three movements each take their title from these verses:1. O Beautiful for Spacious Skies: Opening with filigree woodwind figuring, this movement aims to recreate the light and lightness of a spring sky, birds and blossoms floating on gentle breezes.2. From Sea to Shining Sea: A vivacious celebration of water bubbling in streams, rivers and lakes.3. For Purple Mountain Majesties: A slow final movement representing an awe-inspiring range of mountains Of Skies, Rivers, Lakes and Mountains is geschreven in opdracht van de Northern California Band Directors' Association, ter gelegenheid van het vijftigjarig jubileum van deze organisatie, dat in 2012 werd gevierd. De première werd op 4 februari van dat jaar onder leiding van dirigent Royce Trevis uitgevoerd door de Association’s 2012 Honor Band, in het Harlen Adams Theater, California State University, Chico, Californië.De componist kreeg het verzoek een werk te schrijven dat een lofzang zou zijn op alles wat de natuur van Verenigde Staten te bieden heeft. Die Uraufführung mit dem Ehrenorchester 2012 des Verbands fand am 4. Februar desselben Jahre unter der Leitung von Dr. Royce Trevis im Halen Adams Theater an der California State University, Chico Kalifornien) statt.Der Kompositionsauftrag verlangte ein Stück zu Ehren der Reichtümer der Natur Amerikas. Der Komponist Philip Sparke wählte daher die erste und letzte Strophe aus Katherine Lee Bates’ Text zum Lied America the Beautiful, die da lauten:O beautiful for spaciousskies,For amber waves of grain,For purple mountain majestiesAbove the fruited plain!America! America!God shed His grace on thee,And crown thy good with brotherhoodFrom sea to shining seaDie Titel der drei Sätze stammen alle aus diesen Strophen:1. O Beautiful for Spacious Skies (O wunderschön, der weite Himmel): Mit filigranen Figuren im Holz beginnend, will dieser Satz das Licht und die Leichtigkeit des Frühlingshimmels, die Vögel und von einer sanften Brise getragene Blüten zum Leben erwecken.2. From Sea to Shining Sea (Vom Meer zum strahlenden Meer): Mit lebhafter Musik wird hier in Flüssen, Bächen und Seen sprudelndes Wasser zelebriert.3. For Purple Mountain Majesties (Die Erhabenheit der purpurrot leuchtenden Berge): Der langsame Schlusssatz richtet den Blick auf ehrfurchtgebietende Gebirge. Of Skies, Rivers, Lakes and Mountains est une commande de la Northern California Band Directors' Association pour marquer son 50e anniversaire, en 2012. Cette œuvre a été créée par le Honor Band 2012 de l’Association sous la direction du Dr Royce Trevis au thé tre Harlen Adams de l’université de Californie Chico, Californie, le 4 février de cette même année.La commande stipulait que la pièce devait célébrer les ressources naturelles des États-Unis. From Sea to Shining Sea: Plein de vivacité, ce mouvement évoque les frémissements de l’eau des ruisseaux, des rivières et des lacs.3. For Purple Mountain Majesties:Le dernier mouvement, lent et majestueux, dépeint une impressionnante chaîne de montagnes.
