Voice and/or Instruments Facsimile Score As early as 1932, Harry Partch composed Psalm 23 for Voice and Adapted Viola. Together with Psalm 137 By the Rivers of Babylon the Two Psalms arose. Both settings were performed with other early compositions several times with great success, although Partch was only at the beginning of his career. Almost ten years later he re-set the Adapted Viola part for his newly developed Chromelodeon and added a part for the Kithara.

A new perspective on the final words of Christ is visited in this pensive offering. The Greek phrase spoken on the cross translated as “It is finished” was often used in business transactions of Biblical times, meaning “paid in full.” The poignant realization is the heart of this bittersweet Holy Week anthem. Incorporating the sad “Solveig's Song” theme and the sorrowful strains of the well-known ABERYSTWYTH hymn are masterful touches.

Prokofiev's Piano Sonatas 6â??8 are often referred to as â??war sonatasâ?, since they were composed in Russia during World War II during times of great hardship. As the shortest of the three, no. 7 is entirely focused on the essentials, and is certainly Prokofiev's most famous piano sonata. Anyone who has heard it will not forget the hasty first movement, marked â??Allegro inquietoâ?, the cantabile theme of the second movement and the relentless pull of the machine-like, thudding finale. The Sonata appeared in print in 1943 and that same year received the Stalin Prize (second category), including prize-money of 50,000 rubles, which was welcomed with great joy in the Prokofiev household. You can also derive joy from Prokofiev's Seventh Sonata, here critically edited on the basis of all the sources, and produced using Henle's legendary music engraving. A preface by the world's most prominent Prokofiev researcher, Simon Morrison, rounds off the edition.

Commissioned by Caramoor Music Festival in New York and premiered July 14, 2017 by the Argus Quartet, this work is in no small part a response to this quartet's sense of adventure and expressive emotional range. Inspired by two end-of-civilization novels the composer was reading prior to composing the work, the quartet unfolds in a single movement, loosely based on plot lines in both novels. One of the novels includes a Traveling Symphony, an assortment of musicians and actors who travel the countryside for decades playing symphonies, jazz and orchestral arrangements of popular music alongside performances of Shakespeare plays, reminiscent of medieval troupes traveling the countryside in plague-ridden times. The work is written so that the quartet embodies the Traveling Symphony, not only playing music but also singing and 'stage whispering' fragments of King Lear and other text across the collection of nine scenes.

Bach's cantata for solo soprano Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut was written during the summer of 1714 for the Weimar Court service on the 11th Sunday after Trinity. The cantata text by the Darmstadt Court poet Georg Christian Lehms (1684-1717), based on the well-known parable of the Pharisee and the publican, takes on extraordinary potency and intensity of expression in Bach's setting. Bach performed this cantata several times, in Weimar, and also during his years at Cothen aud Leipzig, meanwhile making various alterations. Our publication is based principally on the Leipzig version of 1723, whose instrumentation includes, in addition to the solo oboe and the customary strings and continuo, a violoncello piccolo. The appendix to our edition presents variants for certain movements from Bach's earlier performances, including a Cothen version with obbligato viola da gamba which is particularly interesting for present-day practice. Score available separately - see item CA.3119900.

Kimmo Hakola's Wind Quintet op. 96 (2017) was commissioned by the Kimito Island Music Festival. The composer sees that making the ensemble ultimately breathe and express itself as an organic, coherent subject should be the aim in composing for wind quintet. The normal chamber-music configuration is not a sufficient basis for me in composing a wind quintet: the instruments have to be compressed, reduced, even crushed together so that, in pairs and different combinations, they produce new, viable audio units. Collision often generates something new. Kimmo Hakola has gone through a number of styles and influences in his career as a composer, his idiom expanding at times to embrace Romanticism, Orientalism and klezmer. He has attained international recognition with an output that spans various genres from intimate solo works to full-length operas such as La Fenice (2011) commissioned by the Savonlinna Opera Festival. Many of his works are expansive and epic: his Piano Concerto (1996), for instance, clocks in at 55 minutes. Hakola says that he sees music as drama. His dramas explore almost Shakespearean extremes, from moments of raging sound and fury and violent battles to quiet moments of meditation and heart-rending monologues.

During his Bohemian spa trip in September 1811, Beethoven notated the first sketches for the Seventh Symphony, a work that occupied him until May 1812 - parallel at times with its disparate sister work, the Eighth Symphony in F major. After a non-public rehearsal on 21 April 1813 in Archduke Rudolph's palace, the Seventh was officially premiered on 8 December, together with the programmatic symphony Wellington's Victory or the Battle of Vitoria op. 91. The concert given before 5,000 enthusiastic listeners became Beethoven's greatest success, probably mainly because of the second mentioned work. The present edition from the new Beethoven Complete Edition re-evaluates the complicated source situation, using as the main sources only the autograph and the parts from the premiere. Revealed could be a number of writing errors and misunderstandings in the copying of the parts, leading to changes from previous editions, particularly concerning numerous markings of dynamics and articulation.

The Colour of Pomegranates for alto flute and piano was composed for flautist James Dutton and pianist Mark Kincaid and received its first performance in 1995 at the Purcell Room at London's Southbank Centre. The 7-minute piece takes its title from a film by Armenian director Sergei Parajanov (1924-1990). In one scene, a peasant sits on a cupola playing his flute to the sound of church bells. In Anderson's piece, the alto flute reflects this image in a slow lyrical melody, whilst the piano part invokes the tolling of bells. …A beautiful, intense little nocturne…The Sunday Times (Paul Driver), 15 January 1995.

This composition for brass quintet was commissioned in 2007 by the renowned Saint Louis Brass Quintet and premiered the same year. This work is inspired by the countless hours that composer Francis Schwartz has spent performing and teaching the music of the great Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. One will find snippets of Mozart's creations throughout Wolfgang's Frolics often accompanied by the histrionic strategies that Francis Schwartz has developed during the past 5 decades. With a firm belief that the attending public also has an active role to play in the concert experience, the performers will at times invite the audience to vocally collaborate.

This work was conceived as a bit of pure musical humor. At times, whimsical, often tongue-in-cheek satire, it provides the brass group with an opportunity to recapture the unencumbered delights of youth. Herbert Rothgarber.
