In 1965 Robert Munster, the Mozart scholar, determined that in a manuscript copy containing 13 settings of the Tantum ergo by Johann Zach (1669-1773), the Director of Music at the Mainz Cathedral, the final Tantum ergo in B flat major was for the most part identical to KV 142. Zach's work is 43 measures long instead of the 63 measures of KV 142, although the Amen coda is missing. For some unknown reason, Mozart made a few changes to Zach's composition and through the addition of the coda extended the work by twenty measures. Following a celebrated series of wind ensemble tone poems about national parks in the American West, Dan Welcher’s Upriver celebrates the Lewis & Clark Expedition from the Missouri River to Oregon’s Columbia Gorge, following the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Welcher’s imaginative textures and inventiveness are freshly modern, evoking our American heritage, including references to Shenandoah and other folk songs known to have been sung on the expedition. For advanced players. Duration: 14’.In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark’s Corps of Discovery to find a water route to the Pacific and explore the uncharted West. He believed woolly mammoths, erupting volcanoes, and mountains of pure salt awaited them. What they found was no less mind-boggling: some 300 species unknown to science, nearly 50 Indian tribes, and the Rockies.Ihave been a student of the Lewis and Clark expedition, which Thomas Jefferson called the “Voyage of Discovery,†for as long as I can remember. This astonishing journey, lasting more than two-and-a-half years, began and ended in St. Louis, Missouri — and took the travelers up more than a few rivers in their quest to find the Northwest Passage to the Pacific Ocean. In an age without speedy communication, this was akin to space travel out of radio range in our own time: no one knew if, indeed, the party had even survived the voyage for more than a year. Most of them were soldiers. A few were French-Canadian voyageurs — hired trappers and explorers, who were fluent in French (spoken extensively in the region, due to earlier explorers from France) and in some of the Indian languages they might encounter. One of the voyageurs, a man named Pierre Cruzatte, also happened to be a better-than-average fiddle player. In many respects, the travelers were completely on their own for supplies and survival, yet, incredibly, only one of them died during the voyage. Jefferson had outfitted them with food, weapons, medicine, and clothing — and along with other trinkets, a box of 200 jaw harps to be used in trading with the Indians. Their trip was long, perilous to the point of near catastrophe, and arduous. The dream of a Northwest Passage proved ephemeral, but the northwestern quarter of the continent had finally been explored, mapped, and described to an anxious world. When the party returned to St. Louis in 1806, and with the Louisiana Purchase now part of the United States, they were greeted as national heroes.Ihave written a sizeable number of works for wind ensemble that draw their inspiration from the monumental spaces found in the American West. Four of them (Arches, The Yellowstone Fires, Glacier, and Zion) take their names, and in large part their being, from actual national parks in Utah, Wyoming, and Montana. But Upriver, although it found its voice (and its finale) in the magnificent Columbia Gorge in Oregon, is about a much larger region. This piece, like its brother works about the national parks, doesn’t try to tell a story. Instead, it captures the flavor of a certain time, and of a grand adventure. Cast in one continuous movement and lasting close to fourteen minutes, the piece falls into several subsections, each with its own heading: The Dream (in which Jefferson’s vision of a vast expanse of western land is opened); The Promise, a chorale that re-appears several times in the course of the piece and represents the seriousness of the presidential mission; The River; The Voyageurs; The River II ; Death and Disappointment; Return to the Voyage; and The River III .The music includes several quoted melodies, one of which is familiar to everyone as the ultimate “river song,†and which becomes the through-stream of the work. All of the quoted tunes were either sung by the men on the voyage, or played by Cruzatte’s fiddle. From various journals and diaries, we know the men found enjoyment and solace in music, and almost every night encampment had at least a bit of music in it. In addition to Cruzatte, there were two other members of the party who played the fiddle, and others made do with singing, or playing upon sticks, bones, the ever-present jaw harps, and boat horns. From Lewis’ journals, I found all the tunes used in Upriver: Shenandoah (still popular after more than 200 years), V’la bon vent, Soldier’s Joy, Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier, Come Ye Sinners Poor and Needy (a hymn sung to the tune “Beech Springâ€) and Fisher’s Hornpipe. The work follows an emotional journey: not necessarily step-by-step with the Voyage of Discovery heroes, but a kind of grand arch. Beginning in the mists of history and myth, traversing peaks and valleys both real and emotional (and a solemn funeral scene), finding help from native people, and recalling their zeal upon finding the one great river that will, in fact, take them to the Pacific. When the men finally roar through the Columbia Gorge in their boats (a feat that even the Indians had not attempted), the magnificent river combines its theme with the chorale of Jefferson’s Promise. The Dream is fulfilled: not quite the one Jefferson had imagined (there is no navigable water passage from the Missouri to the Pacific), but the dream of a continental destiny.

Volume 15 reveals a largely unknown treasure of the romantic song for voice with piano accompaniment in which his complete 100 solo songs with opus numbers are united in one collection. The musical spectrum ranges from the naive-witty Kinderlieder op. 152 to the highly dramatic setting of Des Madchens Klage op. 57,7 from Schiller's Wallenstein. Among the authors of these poems Rheinberger's scarcely-known contemporaries are represented, just as are the great names of German literature, including Goethe, Eichendorff, and Scheffel. English and Italian poets are also represented (Burns, Moore, Petrarca, Savonarola).

The trio sonata is regarded as one of the core chamber music genres of the 17th and 18th centuries. Corelli remains to this day its best-known exponent, but also before and after him there was a multitude of exceptional works in the genre that remain largely unknown today. This two-volume catalogue raisonné has finally brought these treasures to light. Thanks to support from the Balzan Foundation and the University of Zurich, this catalogue now offers the first-ever bibliography of the genre. It encompasses all the published trio sonatas of the 17th and 18th centuries, and also provides detailed information on sources and works, plus introductory commentaries. This printed catalogue will be complemented by an online database with enhanced search functions that will enable both scholars and practising musicians to explore this fascinating repertoire. In English-speaking countries ‘Away in a Manger’ is one of the first Christmas songs to be taught to little children. It is a moving song with simple words, which makes it easy to understand. The song is also known as ‘Luther’s Cradle Hymn’. This suggests that Martin Luther was the author of the lyrics. According to researchers, however, this is a misconception the author is unknown. In England ‘Away in a Manger’ is sung to a different melody than in the USA, for example. The ‘English’ melody was composed by W.J. Kirkpatrick. Andrew Mackereth made a touching arrangement of the ‘English’ melody, which suits the tender lyrics perfectly.

The autograph, regrettably, has not survived. The source on which the present edition is based consists of the principal and other violin parts, in the hand of an unknown copyist, preserved in the music collection of the Benedictine abbey of Melk (Stift Melk) in Austria (the work’s nickname derives from this location). The Melker Concerto in A Major, Hob. VII a: 3, is one of the few violin concertos by Joseph Haydn regarded as authentic. Listed in the Breitkopf catalogue in 1771, it was probably composed some time between 1765 and 1770.

This musical setting of a German poem by an unknown poet (English translation by Linda Godry) too has won second prize at the prestigious composition competition of the ChorVerband NRW in 2012, as has the musical setting of the same text for female choir by Alwin M. Schronen (product number C55504).In a mostly syllabic setting, the composer takes up the images of the poem and expresses them through musical means. As a result, the listener hears the dense and deeply felt devotion of the singing self to the one opposite to him, the - unattainable - moon.

In the last year of his life, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) composed the six charming Children's Pieces, op. 72 (EB 8317). In contrast to the collections of children's pieces (by Schumann or Reger, for example), these have remained relatively unknown. Admittedly, however, they here and there demand technical and musical accomplishments that are beyond those to be expexted of beginners and belong to an intermediate stage of instruction. In the present edition, minor re-arrangements and cuts (in op. 72 no. 6) are intended to make the music more accessible to a child's understanding. The Songs without Words presented here are musically more demanding. From the total of 48 pieces, I have selected three slow compositions in which simple, beautiful melodie lines are supported by chorale-like piano textures. True performance of these pieces requires clean polyphonic chord playing and a cultivated pedal technique. The selection of pieces in this edition will, it is hoped, stimulate renewed interest in the piano music of Mendelssohn, which is so neglected today. With the final verse of the Book of Daniel from the Old Testament and a related cantata text, Telemann mourns the death of a prominent, but until now unknown dignitary in a cantata marked by great intimacy and with exquisite instrumentation. Jakob Ditmar, the Kantor of the Nikolaikirche in Berlin, to whom we owe the survival of this work, contributed two beautiful chorale settings for a performance in 1757. This Hollywood blockbuster from 1962, is an historic and epic drama that turned out to be a massive box-office hit, despite the unknown cast. Its success can undoubtedly be attributed in part to the excellent soundtrack. Erik Mast has made a wonderful arrangement of the soundtrack which has become a masterpiece in its own right.
