Zion is the third and final installment of a series of works for Wind Ensemble inspired by national parks in the western United States, collectively called Three Places in the West. As in the other two works (The Yellowstone Fires and Arches), it is my intention to convey more an impression of the feelings I've had in Zion National Park in Utah than an attempt at pictorial description. Zion is a place with unrivalled natural grandeur, being a sort of huge box canyon in which the traveler is constantly overwhelmed by towering rock walls on every side of him -- but it is also a place with a human history, having been inhabited by several tribes of native Americans before the arrival of the Mormon settlers in the mid-19th century. By the time the Mormons reached Utah, they had been driven all the way from New York State through Ohio and, with tragic losses, through Missouri. They saw Utah in general as a place nobody wanted, but they were nonetheless determined to keep it to themselves. Although Zion Canyon was never a Mormon Stronghold, the people who reached it and claimed it (and gave it its present name) had been through extreme trials. It is the religious fervor of these persecuted people that I was able to draw upon in creating Zion as a piece of music. There are two quoted hymns in the work: Zion's Walls (which Aaron Copland adapted to his own purposes in both is Old American Songs and the opera The Tender Land) and Zion's Security, which I found in the same volume in which Copland found Zion's Walls -- that inexhaustible storehouse of 19th-century hymnody called The Sacred Harp. My work opens with a three-verse setting of Zion's Security, a stern tune in F-sharp minor which is full of resolve. (The words of this hymn are resolute and strong, rallying the faithful to be firm, and describing the city of our God they hope to establish). This melody alternates with a fanfare tune, whose origins will be revealed in later music, until the second half of the piece begins: a driving rhythmic ostinato based on a 3/4-4/4 alternating meter scheme. This pauses at its height to restate Zion's Security one more time, in a rather obscure setting surrounded by freely shifting patterns in the flutes, clarinets, and percussion -- until the sun warms the ground sufficiently for the second hymn to appear. Zion's Walls is set in 7/8, unlike Copland's 9/8-6/8 meters (the original is quite strange, and doesn't really fit any constant meter), and is introduced by a warm horn solo. The two hymns vie for attention from here to the end of the piece, with the glowingly optimistic Zion's Walls finally achieving prominence. The work ends with a sense of triumph and unbreakable spirit. Zion was commissioned in 1994 by the wind ensembles of the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Oklahoma. It is dedicated to the memory of Aaron Copland. $105.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Melody instrument (in Bb, Eb, C) and piano SKU: M7.AHW-1901 Composed by Charlie Parker. Sheet music. 31 pages. Charles Colin Corp. #AHW 1901. Published by Charles Colin Corp. (M7.AHW-1901). The 'Charlie Parker Yardbird Originals' were originally published in 1954 by my dad, Dr. Charles Colin. In his memoir, 'Reflections II', he includes the colorful story of how it came to be that he met Charlie Parker and would publish this early work. Using most of Pop's lingo, here is a synopsis of that story: 'In the 40's - early 50's 'I' had eight studios on the second floor at 111 West 48th Street with several outstanding teachers. One of whom was Jimmy Abato who played bass clarinet with the Met. Between lessons, Jimmy relaxed at Jim and Andy's, a bar frequented by the top studio and recording artists where they would all meet for a few congenial moments in between sessions. One day Jimmy was chatting with Charlie Parker who confided that he was going through difficult times and was looking for a way to earn some cash. Jimmy, knowing that pop was into music publishing, suggested that Parker and he meet with the idea that he write a few Be Bop tunes that could be printed in book form. Even though Bebop was not yet in the mainstream or necessarily accepted by the music world, pop had great admiration and confidence in 'Charlie Parker' and was willing to make the considerable investment.' Each of the 5 tunes is presented here transposed into B-flat, C, and E-flat, alongside a piano accompaniment. As with many other libretti by Pietro Metastasio, “Ezio†was also set to music several times – besides Handel, by Nicola Porpora in 1728 and Christoph Willibald Gluck in 1750. As the historical events from late antiquity surrounding the Western Roman General Aëtius, who had defeated the Huns under Attila on the Catalaunian Fields, had largely fallen into oblivion by the 18th century, they merely form a backdrop to the highly-dramatic “Sex and Crime†on the operatic stage. In contrast with the original Roman story, “Ezio†remains alive at the “happy endingâ€, and the enthusiastic public experienced this version for the first time on 15 January 1732 in London . However, despite this, the opera only received five performances during Handel’s lifetime. Handel took the overture from his incomplete opera “Titus l’Empereurâ€.
The new vocal score is based on Vol. II/26 of the Halle Handel Edition (BA 4086).

| Without Form and Void Choral SATB SATB, Piano Theodore Presser Co.
Choral SATB choir, piano SKU: PR.362034230 A Prologue to THE CREATION ...(+)
Choral SATB choir, piano SKU: PR.362034230 A Prologue to THE CREATION by Franz Joseph Haydn. Composed by Dan Welcher. Sws. Premiered at the Northwest Hills United Methodist Church, Austin, TX. Choral. Performance Score. With Standard notation. Composed July 5 2014. 16 pages. Duration 5:15. Theodore Presser Company #362-03423. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.362034230). ISBN 9781598069556. UPC: 680160624225. Letter inches. English. When the Texas Choral Consort asked Welcher to write a short prologue to Haydn's The Creation, his first reaction was that Haydn already presents Chaos in his introductory movement. As he thought about it, Welcher began envisioning a truer void to precede Haydn's depiction of Chaos within the scope of 18th-century classical style - quoting some of Haydn's themes and showing human voices and inhuman sounds in a kind of pre-creation melange of color, mood, and atmosphere. Welcher accepted this challenge with the proviso that his prologue would lead directly into Haydn's masterpiece without stopping, and certainly without applause in between. Scored for mixed chorus and Haydn's instrumentation, Without Form and Void is a dramatically fresh yet pragmatic enhancement to deepen any performance of Haydn's The Creation. Orchestral score and parts are available on rental. When Brent Baldwin asked me to consider writing a short prologue to THE CREATION, my first response was “Why?â€Â THE CREATION already contains a prologue; it’s called “Representation of Chaosâ€, and it’s Haydn’s way of showing the formless universe. How could a new piece do anything but get in the way? But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. The Age of Enlightenment’s idea of “Chaos†was just extended chromaticism, no more than Bach used (in fact, Bach went further).Perhaps there might be a way to use the full resources of the modern orchestra (or at least, a Haydn-sized orchestra) and the modern chorus to really present a cosmic soup of unborn musical atoms, just waiting for Haydn’s sure touch to animate them. Perhaps it could even quote some of Haydn’s themes before he knew them himself, and also show human voices and inhuman sounds in a kind of pre-creation mélange of color, mood, and atmosphere. So I accepted the challenge, with the proviso that my new piece not be treated as some kind of “overtureâ€, but would instead be allowed to lead directly into Haydn’s masterpiece without stopping, and certainly without applause. I crafted this five minute piece to begin with a kind of “music of the spheres†universe-hum, created by tuned wine glasses and violin harmonics. The chorus enters very soon after, with the opening words of Genesis whispered simultaneously in as many languages as can be found in a chorus. The first two minutes of my work are all about unborn human voices and unfocused planetary sounds, gradually becoming more and more “coherent†until we finally hear actual pitches, melodies, and words. Three of Haydn’s melodies will be heard, to be specific, but not in the way he will present them an hour from now. It’s almost as if we are listening inside the womb of the universe, looking for a faint heartbeat of worlds, animals, and people to come. At the end of the piece, the chorus finally finds its voice with a single word: “God!â€, and the orchestra finally finds its own pulse as well. The unstoppable desire for birth must now be answered, and it is----by Haydn’s marvelous oratorio. I am not a religious man in any traditional sense. Neither was Haydn, nor Mozart, nor Beethoven. But all of them, as well as I, share in what is now called a humanistic view of how things came to be, how life in its many forms developed on this planet, and how Man became the recorder of history. The gospel according to John begins with a parody of Genesis: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.â€Â  I love that phrase, and it’s in that spirit that I offer my humble “opener†to the finest work of one of the greatest composers Western music has ever known. My piece is not supposed to sound like Haydn. It’s supposed to sound like a giant palette, on which a composer in 1798 might find more outrageous colors than his era would permit…but which, I hope, he would have been delighted to hear. $3.50 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks
| Ballet Music Orchestra Barenreiter

Orchestra SKU: BA.BA05822-01 Composed by Christoph Willibald Von Gluck. Edited by Irene Brandenburg. Arranged by Carlo Bernardi and Gasparo Angiolini. This edition: complete edition, urtext edition. Linen. Complete edition, Score. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA05822-01. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA05822-01). ISBN 9790006567454. 33 x 26 cm inches. Preface: Brown, Bruce Alan. To conclude Series II (Dance Dramas) from the Gluck Complete Edition (GGA), this volume of Christoph Willibald Gluck's earliest contributions to the genre comprises six ballet scores from 1759 (La Promenade, Les Jardiniers, Les Turcs, Les Savoiards, Les Amours de Flore et Zphire, and Le Suisse) as well as the ballet music for Les Vendanges, which dates from 1761. These works belong to the compositions â also called Krumau ballets because of their musical transmission â which Gluck created in Vienna between 1759 and 1765 for the court theatres in Laxenburg and Schönbrunn as well as the Kärntnertortheater, and which are to be attributed to him as a ballet composer around the middle of the 18th century in Viennese theatre life based on the considerations presented in the general preface.
Together with volumes II/3 to II/5, ballet music by Gluck is available whose sources come from the former Schwarzenberg court archive in Ceský Krumlov, Czech Republic, and which until the Velvet Revolution of 1989, lay behind the Iron Curtain remaining largely inaccessible and unexplored by Western scholars. These volumes reflect two fundamental developments in Gluck research: on the one hand, they provide a significantly expanded, historically more accurate idea of what it meant to compose for the ballet in the 18th century; on the other hand, they bring to light an immense treasure trove of sources formerly of Viennese provenance.
In addition to the detailed introduction by this volumeâs editor on the ballet choreographies of Gasparo Angiolini and Carlo Bernardi, on the formation of the ballet troupes of the Viennese theatres in Gluck's early years there, on ballet types and genres, as well as a detailed account of the individual titles, the volume includes a general preface to volumes II/3 through II/5 by Bruce Alan Brown, which discusses Gluck's ballet music in Vienna in general as well as the development of research into this genre. Extensive illustrations (partly from the so-called Durazzo Collection) with reference to the choreographies enrich the discussions. The ballet works, which have survived in only one source each, appear in print for the first time in this volume of the Gluck Complete Edition.

UPC: 680160099405. 11 x 17 inches. This is the second incarnation of a work I first composed in 1994 for symphonic wind ensemble. The earlier version was intended to be the summation of three-part suite, each part being named for a different national park in the Western United States. This orchestral version, commissioned in 1999 by the Utah Symphony and dedicated to the memory of Aaron Copland, is more than a re-scoring of the earlier piece; it is a re-thinking of all its elements. Zion is a place with unrivaled natural grandeur, being a sort of huge box canyon in which the traveler is constantly overwhelmed by towering rock walls on every side of him -- but it is also a place with a human history, having been inhabited by several tribes of native Americans before the arrival of the Mormon settlers in the mid-19th century. There are two quoted hymns in the work: Zion's Walls (which Aaron Copland adapted to his own purposes in both his Old American Songs and the opera The Tender Land) and Zion's Security, which I found in the same volume in which Copland found Zion's Walls -- that inexhaustible storehouse of 19th-century hymnody called The Sacred Harp. The work ends with a sense of triumph. $80.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

The special occasion that Philip Sparke was honoured to write this piece for was the 200th anniversary of the Stadtmusik Bad Säckingen. Since Bad Säckingen is known as the ’Trompeterstadt’, or trumpeter city, Sparke’s creative process was influenced by Joseph Victor Scheffel’s poem, Der Trompeter von Säckingen (The Trumpeter from Säckingen), which is based on a true story. The overture starts with a majestic fanfare, followed by a lively molto vivace. It is joined by a brilliant trumpet call in honour of the city’s famous resident.
Overture for a Special Occasion is feestelijk van sfeer.

$52.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Concert band - Grade 3 SKU: CL.012-4166-75 Composed by Shaffer. Concert Band. Concert Band Series. Audio recording available separately (item CL.WFR379). Oversized, spiral-bound score. Composed 2013. Duration 5 minutes, 22 seconds. Opus III Wind Orchestra Publications #012-4166-75. Published by Opus III Wind Orchestra Publications (CL.012-4166-75). Freedom Rising was written in commemoration of the 150 anniversary of Quantrill's raid on the unsuspecting town of Lawrence, Kansas where the residents bravely fought to defend their town from the forces of pro-slavery western counties. Opening with a dark and haunting woodwind choir, the composition quickly journeys into the raging battle that took place that fateful August day in 1863. The slower middle section is a powerful hymn expressing the hope of all townspeople for a successful defense to this sneak-attack. The dramatic powerful conclusion leaves us with the knowledge that this community fought desperately for the freedom of all people. A powerful piece that brings to life this brief but important period in American history. $25.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks
