A rare and beautiful chart from the Glenn Miller Orchestra, this chart was originally scored by Bill Finegan and is his iterpretation of Tschaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. The arrangement is full of tonal and dynamic contrast, with a mix of raw brass energy and muted sectional playing, with some lush scoring in all the sections and of course the famous Miller reed sound with plunger brass figures behind the reed section. The piano has a couple of solo spots, but the chart is not a piano feature. The brass ranges are not too demanding, the second alto doubles clarinet, and baritone doubles alto. As with all Miller charts, precision and sectional discipline is required.

Here is a slow, gutty, down-home type of blues written for and recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on the Adventures In Blues album. There is open solo space for tenor, trumpet and piano. This was recorded on the Stan Kenton Orchestra CD Live at the Tropicana. This is a very hip version of the old jazz standard. It is set at a moderate swing tempo, and there is solo space for trumpet, trombone, tenor sax and an intro by bass alone. The solos have been transcribed and are included on the parts. An additional set of trumpet parts (along with the original versions) are provided to make this much more playable. It still swings like crazy. A refreshing, wonderful look at an oft-played tune. 5-5-5-3 (can be played with 8 brass).

Much like Neil Hefti's Li'l Darlin', this Billy Byers original exemplifies quiet, warm ensemble writing at its finest. There is also the contrast of a strong shout section before returning to the quieter approach. This was recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on the album Count Basie's Finest Hour (originally Basie Land). Set as a medium-slow swing feel, there are solos for trumpet and piano. In this edited version, the arrangement is almost exactly like the original, except the solos are written out, the high trumpet parts are adjusted, and the saxophone parts have been simplified a bit. 5-4-4-4.

As recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on Adventures In Standards, this is a medium-swing chart on a great tune. Lennie uses a neat vamp in the trombones to offset the melody in the saxes. The full ensemble then kicks off a trombone solo. The full band plays a great shout chorus out to the end. There is an optional ending (the recorded as opposed to the original). Kenton and Niehaus at their best! 5-5-5-3 (can be played with 8 brass).

This is a gorgeous ballad arranged by Willie Maiden for the great Maynard Ferguson Orchestra and is included in The Complete Roulette Recordings' (Mosaic). There is wonderful ensemble writing that is playable by most bands, and also features a short improvised solo for the tenor saxophone. With a strong, Maynard-like player for this lead trumpet feature (written out), your band will have a truly magnificent, knock-out ballad to add to any concert program. 5-4-4-3.

As recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on Adventures In Standards CD, this is a wonderful, swinging chart on a great tune. As usual, Lennie does a great job arranging it, with terrific section work and limited ranges for the brass (written high D for 1st Tpt). There is a nice, lengthy solo for Baritone Sax. 5-5-5-3 (can be played with 8 brass).

Also known as Patterns For Orchestra (as recorded on the Verve jazz masters 48 CD), this is one of Nelson's very interesting charts. It has a very angular, exciting melody in a brisk swing tempo, and lots of solo space for trombone (as recorded by J.J. Johnson). The solo space could be filled by piano or any other instrument as well. The instrumentation has been converted to 5-4-4-4, a standard big band.

As recorded on the brilliant CD Afrique, by the Count Basie Orchestra, and also (in another form) by the Buddy Rich Band on the CD Swingin' New Big Band. This chart is an up-tempo swing tune which just roars from beginning to end.
