Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) composed this madrigal in 1605. It appears in the fifth of his eight books of madrigals and is one of his most famous. Cruda Amarilli are the first words in a soliloquy from the play Il pastor fido, which was published in Venice in 1589 by the dramatic poet Battista Guarini (1538-1612). The soliloquy translates as follows: Cruel Amaryllis, who with your name to love, alas, bitterly you teach. Amaryllis, more than the white privetpure, and more beautiful, but deafer than the deaf asp, and fiercer and more elusive. Since telling offended you, I shall die in silence. Barry Toombs' elegant brass quintet arrangement of Monteverdi's madrigal setting of Cruda Amarilli successfully imitates the fluid quality of the human voice.

With his arrangement of Drei Könige, originally composed for voices, Robert van Beringen makes a welcome contribution to the christmas repertoire for bands. In this work by the German composer Peter Cornelius (1824 - 1874) the mediaeval choral Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern comes to the fore as a counter melody.

Robert van Beringen zorgt met deze bewerking van het oorspronkelijk voor vocale bezetting geschreven Drei Könige voor een welkome aanvulling van het kerstrepertoire voor blaasorkest. In dit werk van de Duitse componist PeterCornelius (1824-1874) komt het middeleeuwse koraal Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern als tegenmelodie duidelijk naar voren.

Dieses von Robert van Beringen meisterhaft bearbeitete Werk, das ursprünglich für Singstimme geschrieben wurde, ist eine willkommene Ergänzung des Weihnachtsrepertoires eines jeden Blasorchesters.
