Each of these five movements for solo cello uses a different technique to extend the performer's control over various dimensions of the music. The composer writes:
There are five pieces. In the first, second and fifth there are phrase sequences with free pauses between them. There are also notations for just dynamics (sounds free), and for just rhythms (free sounds). The third and fourth pieces are on grids of 6 x 6 and 8 x 8 bars, allowing continuities to be chosen in variously free ways.
The fifth piece, consisting of a series of passages that may be performed in any sequence, may also be played as a cello duo, with the second cellist playing a different sequence.
The Anton of the title is the dedicatee, cellist Anton Lukoszevieze, who gave the world premiere of this suite at St James' Church, Islington, London on September 21, 2018. This performing edition is a facsimile of the composer's autograph manuscript. At moderate tempi, the total duration of the work may be approximately 15 minutes.

Twelve symphonic cellos form the string group in Aribert Reimann's opera The House of Bernarda Alba, which earned the distinction of Best first performance of the year 2000. Solo II may be seen as an echo of the operatic work for chamber ensemble. Composed for the Emanuel Feuermann Grand Prix, this piece full of tensions calls for a great breadth of technique from the player. Rapid runs and repetitions are required, in addition to polyphonic playing and achieving a balance of sound with numerous sul ponticello effects.

Hummel's piece for solo violoncello and 13 strings follows Hermann Hesse's famous poem 'Stufen' ('Steps') with regard to form and content. Hummel, a cellist himself, arranges the solo part with playing techniques and tone colours that are typical of the instrument. The work begins and ends with a perfect fifth which sets a clear, concise motif. Short phrases in distinctive bowing patterns and harmonics determine the intensive dialogue between solo instrument and the group of 13 string instruments. At the end, the tension leads to an all-explanatory B-A-C-H theme: an unmistakable homage to the old master.

Piece for solo cello is in three sections. The work starts with an almost inaudible tremolo on a low E and then states a few motifs which are repeated and developed throughout, in a fragmented manner and appearing in different orders. The music returns to a loud low tremolando E at the end, and once again fades into nothing. Piece was written in 1970 and first performed by Thomas Igloi at the Holborn Public Library, London, that year. The work was revised in February 2021.

In addition to Bryars' many vocal laude there are a growing number of connected instrumental works. Tre Laude Dolce for solo cello is the second of these to be released as a Schott Edition publication and follows Bryars' Lauda (con sordino) originally for cello and piano. Based on the same principals as the composer's vocal laude and as always, attempting to retain the purity and austerity of the original form, Tre Laude Dolce is characterised by long phrases and open structures; a beautiful work perfect for any good cellist.

Composer's Note When I considered the ensemble of eight cellos, I first thought of matt and dark textures. I also wanted to go back to some ideas on symmetry. While I was pondering all that, I saw snow flakes falling from the dark sky of the Finnish autumn. Focusing on the snow, the idea of writing variations on it and its various forms became clearer in my mind.Nuages de neige is a uniform and linear texture in which I realise my first impressions of that ensemble. The two Etoiles de neige are based on the idea of symmetry and repetition: the first one develops up to a certain point where it doubles back as in a mirror image, the second one consists of eight sections in which the harmonic structure is repeated, as well as a linear gesture that becomes ever more present. Aguilles de glace focuses on different pizzicati and superimposed ostinati. With Fleurs de neige I sought to recall the texture of those harmonic trills at the end of the first section, although more airy and diversified here. Kaija Saariaho.

Salat Babilya was inspired by music from Iraq, in particular the beautiful sonorities of the oud, a variety of Middle Eastern lute dating back to antiquity. An oud-like resonance is evoked without the use of a bow via a combination of 'arabic' scales, open strings, ringing harmonics and ornamental inflections. The particular oud piece that inspired this one was written to help lull the children of Bagdad to sleep during bombing raids and bears the same title, which translates from the Arabic as 'Babylonian Prayer.
