Two settings of the Te Deum by Jan Dismas Zelenka have been survived: the Te Deum in D major ZWV 145 of ca. 1724 and the present Te Deum a due cori in D major ZWV 146, which was composed in 1731. Whereas the Te Deum ZWV 145 is scored for five voices (soli e tutti) and an orchestra including two trumpets and timpani, the setting of the Te Deum a due cori, which includes five soloists and two four-part choirs, as well as four trumpets and timpani, and soloistic flauti traversi is magnificently realized in a more decisive manner. The large, solemn scoring suggests that the work was composed for a worship service on the occasion of the birth of the Electoral Princess Maria Josepha of Saxony. Gounod's Messe a la memoire de Jeanne d'Arc was composed in 1887 for a festive mass in Reims to commemorate the arrival of the national heroine in the city on the occasion of the coronation of Charles VII in 1429. Performed a cappella or only accompanied by an organ, vast stretches of the work are in an archaic style in the tradition of Palestrina. The royal procession into the cathedral is conveyed in the splendid Prelude at the beginning, which was performed at the premiere by eight trumpets, three trombones, and organ. In the performance material, the present edition also offers a version of the movement for piano and organ. For the Offertoire, Gounod composed a cantilena for violin and organ (or piano), which is also included in the edition, as a Vision of Jeanne d'Arc. Score available separately - see item CA.2709600.

The exuberant amorousness of a newly-wed couple pulsates in every note of Gabriel Faure's Dans les ruines d'une abbaye (In the ruins of an abbey). In this piece, the reverent silence of prayer no longer prevails, but within the venerable walls various shouts of joy and sparkling laughter are now heard. The old graves have long been overgrown by stinging nettles, and a new dawn of spring and of love fills the air. Napoleonic post-revolutionary France, which drove the author of the poem, Victor Hugo, into exile, is also building a new world on the ruins of olden days. Although the setting by the composer, 40 years younger than the poet, uses the romanticized backdrop of the old abbey, with its 6/8-meter it reflects the uninhibited happiness of the two lovers, who do not look back. These art songs were originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted them to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing the any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process, the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression, as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist. The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD Kennst du das Land ... (Carus 83.495).

Johann Sebastian Bach's Magnificat BWV 243 was composed in its first form in E flat, right at the beginning of Bach's period in Leipzig, for the Visitation of Mary on 2.7.1723; for a further performance on the 1st day of Christmas, Bach added four extra Christmas movements following a Leipzig tradition. Only in the 1730s did Bach arrange the Magnificat in the well-known version in D; the orchestration was slightly altered, particularly improving the considerable practical performance problems encountered in the E flat major version. Our critical new edition contains the version of the Magnificat in D, based on Bach's autograph score. For Christmas performances the extra movements are available separately, transposed for performance with the D major version of the Magnificat (Carus 31.243/50).
