The collection Polyhymnia Caduceatrix & Panegyrica of 1619 is rightly regarded as the high point in Michael Praetorius's output. It combines Solennische Friedt- und Frewden-Concert: which Praetorius as a travelling musician had composed largely for festive occasions - he writes of Kayser: Konig: Chur: vnd Furstlichen zusammen Kunfften - and also for furnehme Capellen vnd Kirchen. In these chorael concerti the highly modern, Italian style and the Protestant chorale combine and form a symbiosis which showed the way forward for the history of German music. The chorale settings draw on influences from Venetian polychoral music, use ritornelli and employ obbligato instruments in a way which is beyond compare, even in contemporary Italy. Here we see a quite different side of the master from the composer of Es ist ein Ros entsprungen. And above all, Praetorius always remains a practical musician who ensures that these breathtaking chorale concerti can also be effectively performed with smaller forces, sometimes considerably reduced ones. In the chorale setting Wie schon leuchtet der Morgenstern Praetorius wrote for a five-part ensemble which is joined in some sections by a four-part capella. For the ensemble, Praetorius suggested both voices and instruments, which he uses in a sophisticated texture of sound, the instruments sometimes duplicating the voices and sometimes alternating with them. English version available: KP01444E Programme note: These two choral pieces for 12 voices consists of radical recompositions on of earlier themes: in Summer's Sleep we hear new combinations of two 'Sarvig melodies' from the 1970s (one of which is now in the Danish Hymnbook under the title aret, The Year): Michael's Night is based on an earlier, simple choral song (Star Mirror,1987), now for 12 voices and composed such that an original idea of simultaneously displaced, opposite motions cf. the poem) comes out as desired. Of the Nocturnes Norgard writes: Summer's Sleep wascomposed to stanzas of Ole Sarvig's poem The Year (from the collection Forstadsdigte ('Suburban Poems')) and forms the picture of the summer of life, which is asleep - while the heaven seed waits for the summer wind (invisible to every mind). The many layers of text are expressed musically in a multilayered choral texture with 'looks' up and down through the various tempo and time-worlds: summer sleep, summer dream. The second nocturne, Michael's Night, takes its name from the author Ib Michael, whose poem Star Mirror (from the collection Himmelbegravelse ('Sky Funeral') (1986) I pushed/coaxed him to expand from one to nine stanzas. The four selected stanzas set in the nocturne focus on the pan-erotic elements of the moonlit, starlit night. With the titles I have chosen I have stressed the mythic layer of the text, the summer night not as a dream but as sensual reality. The two nocturnes are dedicated to Ivan Hansen on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday on 25th February 2003, out of gratitude for over a quarter of a century of inspiring collaboration.

As Tim Sharp travels the world as an ambassador for choral music he sometimes hears composers in foreign lands that deserve our attention. So is the case with this selection based on the Sara Teasdale poem about clouds. The young composer is committed to melody in a way that is a refreshing return to what seems right. The harmonic treatment is sensitive and sensible, and most satisfying. An excellent concert piece for high school, college and community choirs. Medium in difficulty.

Midwinter Song is a Christmas carol that calls us to love, faith, and hope. With a beautiful and supportive piano accompaniment and accessible vocal lines, this work will appeal to a wide variety of levels. Susan Labarr's Midwinter Song is a new work for Advent or Christmas. Labarr opens the piece with a gentle piano solo that perfectly captures the mystery of the poetry—the words seem to travel out of a time in the deep past and give homage to the neglected art of both rhythm and rhyme. In particular, the description of the world gathering in amber halls in the first verse wonderfully conjures images of medieval casltes or mead halls lit only with firelight and candles, full with the sound of carols. Hugo Wolf set a total of 53 songs by Eduard Morike, all in the year 1888. The composer wrote in a letter: Once you have heard this song, it can only inspire one wish - to die. In the artistic-metaphysical milieu of the late 19th century this was regarded as the highest ideal, especially for Hugo Wolf, who believed in the body as a wretched piano case from which the soul can only break free like harmonies dying away. And yet Fussreise (Journey on Foot) begins as a simple, happy, elated song of travel, revolving around the key of D major over an ostinato piano rhythm. Old Adam believes he senses the bliss of paradise in this, but he continues to be caught in the tension between earthly suffering and eternal longing, as the rest of Hugo Wolf's setting clearly shows: it remains a pious hope that a whole life would be such a morning journey bathed in gentle perspiration. These art songs were originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted them to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing the any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process, the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression, as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist. The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD Kennst du das Land ... (Carus 83.495).
