The central poem, by Madeleine L'Engle, depicts Neptune as a Sea Bishop who blesses all the creatures of sea and land. Gawthrop's vocally grateful text setting is particularly strong here, with occasional imitative entrances. SSAA a cappella. Medium. Changing meters of 10/8 and 6/8 are sure to grab your attention in this contemporary Christmas choral. Rhythmic four-part voices sing mostly in Latin (with occasional joy to the world interjections) and with various choral textures. Staggered Glorias kick it off with exuberance and joyfully return before the final flourish. It's an inspired surprise when the addition of a descant cleverly combines themes we've heard before. Invite a snare drum player to join (part included) to reinforce the triumphant tone.

â??Wide Worldâ? was commissioned by Sing Up and The Sage Gateshead for â??VoiceOver: Through Time and Spaceâ??. The music has a breathless excitement which matches the text, which centers around what the future holds and the idea that one can be whatever one decides to be. Younger singers could use this as a graduation piece, but it is suitable for many circumstances and ages. While technically SSAA, much of it is in two parts, with occasional divisi on each staff.
